Title: Australia Day on Thursday
Post by AussieBrian on Jan 23rd, 2006, 10:28pm
So forgive us our hangovers on Friday but it really is a national event for us, second only to Anzac Day when we remember those we lost in wars protecting our freedoms.

Australia Day celebrates the landing of the first British settlers here some 18 years after James Cook visited, though not everyone sees this as a good thing.  Our Aboriginal people refer to it variously as Invasion Day or Survival Day and give thanks that their forefathers weren't wiped out completely.

Either way, we'll be having a beer.  Just for something different.

Door's open,

Brian.

Thanks Brian,

I got a new calender for 2006 and that date was staring at me everyday this month.  I've never seen it before on a calender and was hoping you'd 'splain it to me.

Back then, isn't it true that those Brits made "Down Under" a bunch of penal colonies?  Aren't all you Aussies descendants of convicted British felons? (except the Aboriginal people, of course).

I got a very funny power point show today about us Aussies it's a bit irreverent but funny.

It is typical of how we take the piss out of each other because we expect that we will.

I can't post this sort of thing so if anyone wants to see it just PM me and I will Email it to you.

Kind Regards
Barry

You're dead right about the penal conolies, BB, and some of the cruelties inflicted were horrendous, but there were also many free-settlers who came here variously to carve their name in a new country or to escape the deprivations of their homeland.

The Irish played a huge part here, as they did in America, and if they gave us nothing else they gave us our music.  They either wrote or adapted the songs we still sing today.

Then there were the gold rushes, of course, which coincided with those in California and Alaska so many people were travelling internationally chasing the precious yellow.

One of the spookiest nights I ever spent in the bush was in the company of some Aussie friends and three blokes from Texas.  I'd just sung a traditional settler song when one of the Americans thanked me for so nicely adapting a ballad from the US.  "No way" says I, "That's pure Oz",  and he goes on to sing his own version.

During the course of the night we found another 12 songs we each believed to be from our own respective countries, but what we were really listening to was the voices of those long past.

It was a sobering experience.

Perhaps Turts is starting a little early just for the practice, Pam, but that's a little mispront and should read singlet.  Perhaps what you'd call a vest.

As for thongs, they're just flat rubber shoes which was why we had a problem understanding the kerfuffle when Monica showed hers to wot's-his-name.

Otherwise, an Aussie kiss is just like a French kiss - just Down Under.

Yours fair dinkum,

Brian.

Here's a couple of Aussie-isms for you.
China Plate = Mate, friend.

Cobber = as above.

Dogs eye = meat pie, enjoyed most while watching football.

Off like a bucket of prawns in the sun = get away real quick, to bugger off.

To bugger off means that you can be told to or you can do it yourself cos youv'e had enough.

Kind Regards

Hi Cootie
Hey you’ve just about got our lingo down to pat, ill make a request to our Minister for Cultural Affairs “Aussie Brian” if we can make you an Honorary Aussie.
Lingo = the way we talk.

The Australian cattle dog as I remember originates from the state of Queensland “ don’t quote me “ and is generally in Australia called a Heeler and then defined by their color; Blue / Red Heeler, my little girl Jess is a blue / red mix but is called a blue because of her prominently blue coloring.

They are an extremely loyal dog and will generally pick one person as their master but remain totally dedicated to the whole family and are fantastic with kids.
I didn’t pick Jess from the litter she picked me, according to the people we got her from she was the outsider that didn’t want to be part of the general going’s on but when we went to look at the pups she shouldered her way out of the pack and made straight to me, it was then that I knew we had the dog that was going to fit with our family.
Because they are a working dog they need exercise daily and room to move, they are definitely not a dog for an apartment as they generally don’t like being inside.
Where I live we only have to walk 50 yards and we are in the bush and I run her every evening for around 10 km, keeps both of us in reasonable shape.
Here’s a link to the West Australian cattle dog club.

Hope ya'll have a great Australia Day.

I just read a story in Smithsonian Magazine about the new train running through the middle of your country, end to end. Can’t remember the train’s name, something about a camel? That would make one heckava vacation ride.
Someday, maybe someday.

Fair dinkum I reckon she'd make a beaut Ocker, Barry, but then so would almost everyone else here.  I've already put DJ up for Australian of the Year Award and expect to hear back about that any day now.

Hey Coots, I know you like dogs so here's another one for ya

http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/2002/archives/2002/roadtests/dog_breeds/australian_working_kelpie

Like the heelers, or Queensland Blue as they're often called, the kelpie is a working dog and has to be treated as such.  To keep them as a pet is bordering on cruely but you should see them amongst the sheep!

(We also refer to Harleys as kelpies, because they spend so much time in the back of a truck.)

And Bob, your citizenship papers should be in the mail this week.  The train you're thinking about is called The Ghan and has a quite magnificent history going back to the Afghan camel trains.

http://www.answers.com/ghan

It runs top to bottom of the country and there's another line called the Indian Pacific runs pretty much from one side to the other.  For those with the time it's a fantastic way to see the country.

As for me myself I, it's beer o'clock.

Cheers all,

Brian.

For Brian and our other Aussie friends:

"There once was a swagman camped by a billabong, under the shade of a coolabah tree.  And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled, who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

Just consider yourselves lucky you aren't here to hear me singing it.....

Happy Australia Day!!!!!!!!

Oh, Nani, I wish.  It's Friday and I'm a sick puppy.

There's a few Aussies around can't have a beer just now so I did the right thing and drank their share.  I know they'll pay me for it in due course, but I'm paying for it this morning.

How crook do you gotta be before you die?

Happy daze,

AussieBrian. Have a g'day (as you say it). It's ironic that you should be celebrating this holiday. I am now reading a non-fiction book about the founding of Australia titled "The Fatal Shores" by Robert Hughes. It is an excellent book for anyone that is interested in Australia. I suspect the Aborigines would argue with me about the "Founding". As do our Native Americans when we say that Columbus discovered America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't think of anything in this world that there could be, that I couldn't like about Australia. You guys are great.

Hey Brian, do you have any good sea stories down under???????????

Our friend Chewy said as much, and it's a valid comment.  It's as though the place never existed until us white fellas got here.  Our Aboriginal people relate very much with your Innuits (I hope that's a respectful term) in that for so long they were considered sub-human.

An interesting book is 'My Place' by Sally Morgan, a half-caste girl and how the government did the 'right thing' by her.  Certainly there are some questions as to true paternity but either way it's a great overview.  If ever you can get hold of a movie called 'Rabbit Proof Fence' it's also worth a look.

As to sea stories from down under, what a delightful thought.  A couple leap immediately to mind and I'll send them to you by PM as soon as She-who-Must-Be-Obeyed stops bashing me around the back of the head with a wet fish because I'm hogging the computer.

Looking forward to re-reading them myself.

Cheers and billy tea,

Brian.

[smiley=laugh.gif] ;; I saw "Rabbit Proof Fence" less than a month ago. It is a great movie about your country and the Aborigines. Got the film from my local library so it must be considered some kind of a classic.

I hate to say it and I'm almost embarrased for saying so but I do believe that I have worked myself out of this latest cluster.

PF for the last 5 days. Not quite secure enough to be sure yet but I'm feeling optimistic. This last cluster started about 10 November '05. That's about 10 weeks which is about average for me as I remember past years.

Hope everyone else can join me for a cluster free future!!!!!!!

Brian. I'll be looking for those sea stories. Thanks
