Title: The Patriot Act in ACTION.... Post by BarbaraD on Jan 19th, 2006, 6:02pm Ya'll have heard me speak of my friend John, the mild mannered CPA. Well, John took a little vacation down to the beach for a little R&R. Made his flight reservations online months ago and they told him he could print out his boarding pass the day he got ready to leave. Well yesterday morning he got ready to leave and went online to print out his boarding pass and it wouldn't let him print out one. So, John goes on to the airport and goes to the ticket counter to get his boarding pass. It's taking a LOT longer than normal and he asks "why" he couldn't print it out online. The ticket agent finally tells him that he's on the "Watch List". After he takes several DEEP breaths (and probabaly a valium) he asks WHY the HELL he's on the Watch List. Seems that Big Brother doesn't really believe ANYONE is really named John Samuel Adams! He called me from the airport yelling about this embarrasment and being the sympathatic friend I am, all I could do was laugh till I was crying. I told him he was just lucky I wasn't traveling with him cause he probably would have NEVER gotten to the damn beach after my big mouth got into that one! ;;D And the bright side (according to the nice lady at the ticket counter) is that he'll probably be on the Watch List for about a year. My mama always said ya gotta watch those quiet ones..... Hugs BD ;) |

Title: Re: The Patriot Act in ACTION.... Post by Ueli on Jan 20th, 2006, 11:01am I just heard about another excess of this paranoiac fear of terrorists: On his flight to the figure skating European championship the luggage of a skater was lost, nothing unusual. Luckily the luggage was soon found, it happens some times, and most of it returned to the owner. Most, because for safety reasons they couldn't hand back the skates. The poor guy had to compete on brand new skates instead on the ones he had 'run in' for the whole season. But then, ice skates come handy if you want to split someone's head. [smiley=smokin.gif] |

Geez ... people pretending they got nothin to hide ... Let's start by decriminalizing breast feeding and making clothing optional. Then we'll make all walls transparent, starting with the bathroom stalls, then bathroom walls. All kinds of illegal things go on there, from drug use to masturbation, diarrhea and reading Newsweek on company time, but upright citizens have nothing to fear from the new policy of transparency. Imagine the lives that will be saved if someone has a heart attack in an otherwise vacant bathroom - when people see it on their webcams, they will immediately call 911. Instead of mail being delivered in sealed envelopes to individual homes, we'll just have the mail carrier post it all on a neighborhood bulletin board. Email servers will be reconfigured so everyone has read permission for everything! Private telephone lines will be replaced with the 'party lines' of old - if they were good enough for grandpa and grandma, they're good enough for you.. Nosy Nelly down the street might spend most of the day lurking to hear to your phone calls, but where's the harm in that? She just might catch a terrorist! You can't trust a person with pockets - never know what they are hiding in it. The new clear plastic tote bags are approved by Homeland Security, and are a fashionable replacement for pockets, purses, and brief cases. Your metal-free clothing not only lets you pass through the new generation of detectors at airports, work and the mini-mart, but also allow you to undergo an emergency MRI without having to change! And this security will be good for business - the chances of someone sneaking a healthy snack into a movie theater will drop to near zero. Law against peeping toms will be repealled, and voyeurism will be elevated to a virtue. Eliminating privacy will help build community. We'll all start minding each other's business. It takes a village, you know .... |

Got to hand in to Google for telling the Feds. to piss off. The Patriot Act opened the door to domestic spying by our government. "Big Brother" has once again proven it will push the limits of government intrusion into private lives if given any opportunity. First it was to protect us from "Potential Terriorists" now expanded to protect us from ourselves. Who would have guessed? This is what happens when citizens silently sacrifice freedoms for a false sense of security. I wonder how "The U.S." will spell "The SS". Welcome to the United Socialist States of America. Careful - we're being watched Comrade. Tom |

Title: Re: The Patriot Act in ACTION.... Post by DonnaHar on Jan 21st, 2006, 9:40pm Supposidly, the search engines are giving the government the search quirey information stripped of user identification. They are only interested in the terms being searched for. Example: I was looking different woods for a home project. I searched for "black walnut". The results had nothing to do with wood! I got the porniest of porn. The U.S. Congress, in its' infinite wisdom and internet savy believes it can pass U.S. laws that will control internet content worldwide. Unfortunately, this stupidity will only burdon the U.S. portions of the internet with regulations the rest of the world won't have to follow. One sided thinking like this will only move more of the internet out of the U.S. The U.S. Congress in this case wants to pass laws governing seach engine results, filtering and access. If only U.S. based search engines must comply, then there won't be U.S. based search engines, ie: Google moves to China. Citizens of the U.S. who are truly concerned about what children access using search engines and issues involving children on the internet should look to the Executive Branch, the State Dept. and the United Nations, not the Legislative Branch which can only unfairly burdon U.S. based internet businesses. |

Post by BarbaraD on Jan 22nd, 2006, 12:16pm Personally I don't see why PARENTS can't just put in a password or whatever it is to KEEP THE KIDS OUT OF THE PORN sites. Why do we need the government supervising this at all? Of course I was raised back in a "simpler" time when kids respected their parents and didn't have access to all this modern stuff ( we just snuck off the riverbottoms to read all the "nasty" forbidden magazines and thought we were so grown up). Back then the "government" actually thought our parents were bright enough to raise their own kids, but what did they know.... Hugs BD |

Well.... I totally agree with being appalled by the government's ability to spy on Americans, but I did just want to say something on this one... Part of the reason they're looking at these "porn" searches is not just because of adults or children looking up porn. Keeping America's children safe doesn't just mean keeping our kids from looking at porn. It's largely to crack down on child pornography. I just heard a story last night about a guy from India who was kicked out of the US because he was not only looking at child pornography, but also trying to solicit minors over the internet. I do think cracking down on a very vile form of child abuse is very important - but I don't know that this is the best way to do it! My .02 Carrie :) |

Title: Re: The Patriot Act in ACTION.... Post by DonnaHar on Jan 22nd, 2006, 9:12pm One of the biggest issues here is the fact that only the U.S. would be regulated, thus seperating us from the rest of the world. This should not be an issue for the U.S. alone. It should not be regulated here in the U.S. alone. I'm sure other countries are just as interested in keeping their children safe as we are. If our government chooses to interfere in our rights and actually does succeed in regulating our internet use, we will lose the big companies to other countries just as we continue to do with other industries. I totally agree with Barbara that parents should be (should have been) the watch dogs, but too many failed in doing their duty. Now, since we have been so conditioned to being stepped on, we will grumble amongst ourselves and just take another one on the chin. I'm tired of it. That's why I started my web site that some 6 people participate in. Seems that grumbling is OK, but actually making some noise isn't. |

You'll change your mind when they read it and find all those emails between you and Ari Budabi in Nigeria discussing illegal mail transfers of millions of dollars. It'll be worse when they find all the letters in your junk mail box where you tried to hide/delete them, as tax evasion. Of course, they'll drop those charges if you plead guilty to postal fraud for that time you reused the stamp that came to your home, unwatermarked. They aren't doing this to find child abusers. They "say" they want a list just like Flo posted...not who went where. Its just trying to crack the door open...I say shut it on their freakin fingers. Pete Townsend of The Who was charged with child pornography and who knows why he was looking at the sites, but he says to "research" child porn so he could do something about it. Where people go has nothing to do with why they are there. People run searches on child porn just to see what and who is in their neighborhood, so they can keep their children safe, as they should. Many people keep an eye on sex offenders in their areas, by searches on the internet. I search my county sheriff's site all the time so I know who I might be going to see for an estimate or work for. I check to make sure people that are applying for a job with me, aren't on the list. You probably have hundreds of copies of copyrighted pictures on your computer right now. Check your temporary internet files. If you haven't cleaned it out in years, it could have thousands. When you go to a site, pictures are downloaded onto your hard drive. They want to have one more hammer to hold over your head just in case they need it sometime down the road. IRS: Hey Mr Wold, we'd really like you to keep an eye on your neighbor. He's trying to support 6 kids and we don't see how he could be doing that without working under the table on some part ime job. Me: No, are you kidding me? IRS: Well, ok, but I think you better come into our office to explain all these hits on the sex offender website. Are you looking to make friends with these people or what? Would our technology development remain the same or would cheap labor in other countries be utilized? If censorship of any kind really takes place, we lose another big industry. Pretty soon we'll run out of things to export. When do we do something to get attention to the fact that we won't be manipulated like this anymore? It seems that there is no way to stop restrictions by the government from eventually happening. It's been coming in small increments for years now. If this invasion of privacy occurs, what next? The internet belongs to the world. Any decisions (like it or not) sould be solved by a world wide entity. Discussion anyone? Maybe a new thread? It would be nice to think that Hayden is just that dumb, but I don't think so. I think he is essentially saying that you only need probable cause to search someone if you bother getting a warrant, otherwise you only need to be reasonable in your search (of course the searcher is free to define reasonable since no warrant is required). The constitution never explicitly states that a warrant is needed for searches. (I guess the proximity in the 4th ammendment is coincidental?) Spying on Al-Qaeda is one thing, but if this defense flies it can open the door for warrantless searches on all US citizens. The Bush administration’s argument is essentially “Trust us. We will only use this power to spy on terrorists." Jesse |
