I can't play  :'( :'(

Had a "computer whiz guy" ??come in months ago to re-build my system at work so that I could have dual hard drives in one CPU.  I need to keep Windows 98 because I have one old program (lighting design & calculation), that is no longer available, cannot upgrade, etc, plus, my plotter is so old it won't work beyond Windows 98.  Well, the "whiz" has me all set up very nicely so I can switch from 98 to XP and back again without too much trouble.  BUT, somehow, some way, he discombulated my sound - I think he took the sound card (is that what it is???) when he junked the stuff I no longer needed.  As soon as he finished with my system I noticed the problem and tried to contact him.    Phone doesn't work, e-mails bounce back - so, I am without  sound.  What do I do now???

You could go with an external USB sound device.  If your system is older and has USB ports, the Extigy from Creative Labs works fairly well and has a lot of nice features.   If you have a newer, faster computer, there is a USB Audigy 2 - also by Creative Labs.  They're both fairly easy to install and use as long as you follow the setup instructions and you don't have to open the case to install them.

These were what was available as of Feb 04.  I have no idea what is available now.  With computers going more to closed box, plug and pray systems, I'm sure there have to be other sound devices of this type out there.

One hint - if you buy, buy full retail products to get support from the manufacturer.  OEM products are usually only supported through your vendor - NOT by the manufacturer.

They worked. Downface---Alone had social redeeming value thanks to acoustic guitars. The vocals sucked on all 3 tracks, were way off key on all of them......then again, my speakers may be fucked up.

This is all post Beatles, right?

EE,

They work great even in Linux, and they are even easy to download.

Sandy,

Installing a second hard drive to make a dual boot system should have been easy, without the need of pulling cards. If you have no sound card and an empty PCI slot, you can look for a used Sound Blaster 16 PCI card locally or on Ebay. If you do have a sound card and speakers, make sure they are plugged into the correct ports and that all volumes are turned up.

This is Bette Midler at her best - from "The Rose" Original Soundtrack. This is the song she performs before collapsing on stage and dying. The passion of her voice still shakes me everytime I hear this one:

And this song from Suzanne Vega has always been a fave. Hauntingly beautiful with the reverbish piano. Very moving.
