Title: Hello All
Post by SweetieMelch on Apr 8th, 2005, 11:49am
Hello! I am new to this site and discussion board.  I went to the nuerologist last month for my headaches and he told me I had migraines and scheduled a CT scan for me.  He also prescribed Depakote and told me I could keep taking my Ultram and Skelaxin that my family Dr prescribed about 4 yrs ago. I didn't think the nuerologist knew what he was talking about when he told me I didn't have cluster headaches as I was previously  told because they usually don't happen in women.  "They are more common in men" he told me. Well, let me tell you something, for the last 3 nights I have been having attacks and waking up between 2 - 3 am so I know they are clusters and not migraines.

The question I have to ask today is, I am flying to the Bahamas on Sunday and I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with flying and clusters?

Hi there,

It certainly sucks to be in pain....any pain....

For any guidance from any of us you will have to describe the duration, intensity and behavior during an attack as well as possible autonomic features that might occur......
Is it a dull pain or a searing pain?

Here's why....

There are other types of HA that wake you up from the middle of a sound sleep. For example, Hypnic HA formally known as Alarm Clock HA.......

The meds your doc has you on aren't typically used to treat CH.....The Neuro perscribed Depakote which some with CH use...

You also didn't mention an abortive therapy....Oxygen, triptans, DHE ???

Back to your question......

You can fly with it just be prepared with the abortives that you didn't mention because some fly ok and some get there rear ends kicked.....
Either way enjoy your trip and don't let the fact that you have any condition hinder you trying to live life to its fullest!!

Hi Sweetie,

I'm sorry you're having such pain.  I'll be the first to say that I would not want to be taking a vacation during cycle without plenty of abortives and/or other meds.  I've never flown during cycle, but that's because I never go ANYWHERE when in cycle.

I wish you luck with your trip and strongly urge to you RUN, not walk for a second opinion when you return.  As a person of the female gender who definitely has clusters, I believe your current physician is probably an idiot.

Sorry - off the soapbox now.

PF Wishes and Hugs,

Kris

Hi there. Nice to meet you but sad that like others you have to be here. There are some good people here that will give you good advice.
The only advice I could offer is maybe change your doctor.
Good luck Sweetie and enjoy your trip.

Hi..

I flew to Europe and back while in cycle. It made no difference - I still got hit the same. My advice to you is to let the Flight Attendents know that you have clusters and that you may get hit during the flight and for them not to worry about it. Also let the person(s) seated next to you know since (at least I do) you may act a little bit on the strange side when getting hit ;;D

Have fun and find a new doctor when you return.

Marty
