Title: im new
Post by bigred on Jan 2nd, 2005, 9:07am
Hi Im Randy IM 41 and am new to this sight. My headachs started about 4 years ago,and its devastated my life. Im a single father of a 9 year old girl and 13 year old boy who live with me. I feel sorry for them to see me suffer almost daily as I have with my headaches. I always get them on my right side just to topright of my right eye. It never fails that I go to bed and almost on the hour of getting to sleep I wake up with an headache. I dont get them at my day job and dont realy get them at home during the day unless I go take a nap.
Some are worse then others, From light strait pain to it feels like someone is driving a stake through my right temple. They last around 20-30 minutes. But the constant pain makes me feel like death every pulsing second on the bad ones.
I beleive I am abusing migrane headache pills, always taking 2-3 whenever I feel a headache coming on or when I wake up with one. About 4-6  has been the normal amount daily the last 4 months.
I have been righting down the times and medicine I take since oct-2004 for my headaches.
I stopped drinking 7 months ago becuase the headaches were 100% worse when I would drink. To stop cold turkey after drinking beer regularly for 22 years was not all that bad. The buzz I got from alcohol was not worth the pain I recieved once a headache started.
I have no socail live and rarely see my old freinds for fear of getting a headache and have to abrubtly leave a gathering. The docter I seen last has been no help.
Im hoping someone out there can give sugestions to help me get controll of my life again.
If you have any sugestions please e-mail me.
Thanks.    rpappas@frontiernet.net

Red are you seeing a doc? We have great meds and abortives now available to us through prescription. Also, you should try some 02, that helps alot here.

Do some reading on the left, and stick around, you'll like what you learn ;;D

Hi Red, I'm Redd...(this could get confusing now, but it could actually be fun to..)  :D

Do you ever get a remission from the attacks?  If so how much time between rounds?   Have you seen a neurologist yet, or just a GP?  Have they run any tests like an MRI?

I ask because that would be the first thing to do, demand is a referal to a neuro.  Read up over on the left there to help you gather info to take with you.  Don't be afraid to print it out.  O2 needs to be used at 12ml per min/ with a non rebreather mask. No it doesen't work for everyone, but not everyone gets it right at first either.  A bubbler on the set up helps with that dry throat problem.

Sorry you had to find this place Randy, but sure glad you are looking into this.  Great group of wild and wacky folks here...keep us posted and defineately get thee to a neuro armed with all you can.  If you get one who specialises in hedaches all the better!

Thanks redd. once I figure the ins and outs of this sight, I believe at least  Ill have a place to go to vent my frustrations over the pain.
The remisions are few and not far enough away to make me happy. I had herniated neck disk surgery about 8 years ago, I wonder if this could be part of the problem?

Hi Red...welcome. You should definitely see a neurologist asap. Yes, there is treatment available...and it will help make your life more livable. Using too many OTC migraine pills can be bad for you, and they won't really do anything for a fullblown headache. They sometimes help me with small shadow headaches, but not a fullblown one. Keep reading, keep asking questions and hopefully you can get a handle on this soon. I know how hard it is for kids to watch. I've got an 11 and a 9 year old. My 9 year old girl even draws pictures of the HA...it helps her understand I think. There is a post of one on the general board somewhere...called more mooshie CH art. good luck and pain free wishes to you!

Hi Red and Welcome.

I have to agree with Redd on the oxygen, it didn't work for me at first, because I wasn't using it correctly.  It worked wonders afterwards for me.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey Red...read, read, read this site, get a good neurologist & don't help your kids with their spelling homework then all will be well.

Hang in there,
