I picked up some melatonin today.Read it helps some with night time attacks. The instructions on the bottle read to take 1 about 1hr. before bed. What I've been reading here and there on the board suggests most people take much higher dosage.

So, what should I do? Does the 3mg. dose on the bottle help, or would you recommend starting a little higher?

Since it's so late, I'll answer.

You choose. Plenty of people here take 9mg. Be prepared to feel tired tmo if you do. :P

You could try 3 and see what happens...work your way up. May take a few days if it works for you. Think it prevents r.e.m. sleep....which is when the night CHs happen.

Started with 3mg approx 60 days ago, three days after having a KIP 9 in a very public place - had to beat off the well-wishers trying to haul me to the ER and assure the guy praying over me that I wasn't going to die on the spot. Didn't have anything over a KIP 5 until ten days ago when got hit with three hard days/nights (emptied 4 "E" tanks in those three days). Upped the Melatonin to 6mg and started my Verapamil again (12omg morning and evening) . . . . quit taking my "maintenance" dose of Verap (120mg daily) approximately eight months ago (blood pressure was getting too low for comfort). Long story short, the clusters came back on a regular basis in mid-September and I was able to keep them under the KIP 5 level with the Melatonin and 02.
Don't take it too late - tends to make me groggy in the morning.

All of the clinical reports I've seen are using 9-10mg to treat cluster.

If you are using only to help with sleep, then 0.3mg has been reported as the best dose. (Yes, it requires some cutting of the pill or using a liquid form.)

you should also try time-release melatonin, it will help you get through the whole night.

I went with 9 mils right away. Never slept better, and my attacks were less severe during the morning. I think that meletonin is awesome!

I am currently between cycles. PF! And I still pop one if I need to sleep through the night. I tend to wake up mid of the night, bathroom, drink, yada and can't fall back asleep quite as well as when I have one tab of mel @ 3mills.

Chronics should keep their doses as low as possible. It can be a trigger for them. :-/

I picked up some melatonin even tho my doctor gave it "thumbs down". I have only tried it for three nights, 3mg. the first two, and 6mg. last night. I had a really bad night of "hits" last night so don't think it is good for me. Maybe I am not giving it enough of a trial. Christmas night I took a regular pm pain reliever and had a great night's sleep. Seems to work better for me but would rather do melatonin. Just didn't seem to be effective, however. Does it take awhile to work? I am in week 11 and anticipating the cycle to end soon!!

I take Melatonin faithfully.

I have had to adjust the dosage several times. It's not a foolproof solution, but when the CH breaks thru, I take 9mg. When the CH settles down, I go back to 3mg.

I have had times, when it seemed as tho it didn't help. However, for the most part, it has worked great for me.

I get nightime hits only. Only had a CH a couple times during daylight hours. I do take Magnesium each morning. I read somewhere that we Ch'ers may have a low level of Magnesium.

Thomas.....I have not found time release Melatonin. Where did you get it? :-*
