Title: Hello to everyone from Denver!
Post by byoung111 on Dec 2nd, 2004, 9:03pm
Let me start out by saying that I thought I had it bad untill I stared reading the posts on this site. My heart goes out to everyone with CH.

I've had CH since 1996. Usually 1 every other day for 7 weeks starting in Feb. It wasn't until 2002 that I started doing some research on the internet and found that I had CH. I went to the Dr. in Feb. 03 to see what he could do. He put me on Prednisone, and Imitrex nasel spray. I think the Prednisone made that cycle last longer, and the spray didn't do much for me. On the bright side I had been PF from April 03 until just a couple of weeks ago when the Beast showed it's head. And that when I got back on the internet and found you.

Even though this is my first post, I'd like to thank you all. I had no intention of going back to the Dr. because I didn't think there was much else he could do after the last visit. But the information on this site has brought me some hope. I've started takeing Meliton at night and that has helped. I am going back to the Dr. tomorrow to try and get the Imitrex injection, and some O2.

I think I've rambled enough for now, and hope to see better days ahead for all.

Brian ::)

Welcome b and sorry you're here. When you go back to the dr, you may also want to discuss preventatives. Verapamil and lithium are common. Keep looking around this board and the OUCH site for more info. Pain free wishes...

Welcome - - you're in the right place.  Keep reading and asking . . . . you've just joined a great bunch of lunatics who know what you/we go through.

Verapamil and oxygen worked for me.  Had my first pain free day when upped the Verap to 240 mg.

This cycle started about three months ago and I haven't  started the Verapamil yet because of concerns about blood pressure and other meds I'm on at present....so, am sucking up the 02 at the rate of one E tank per day and taking melatonin now for about two months - 3mg at night.   Just upped to 6 mg day before yesterday.  The melatonin seems to decrease the intensity of the attacks.  We'll see.

 Be safe,  PFDAN's

Welcome to the website.  Sucks that you had a reason to come looking for us, but damned glad you found us.

As you have no doubt discovered, the links to the left have tons of good info in them.  There is even more on the OUCH website.   Read everything you can and print stuff out that seems applicable.  Unfortunately, you may end up teaching whatever doctor about CH.

Here is a link to read and print and take to your doctor.  It describes preventative, transitional, abortive and surgical treatments for CH.

http://www.future-drugs.com/admin/articlefile/ERN020304.pdf

Here is a link to some non-prescription alternatives different people have used to help with the pain:

http://www.clusterheadaches.org/resources/non_script_treat.htm

If you are currently taking medications, I would suggest you talk with your doctor before taking any of the nutritional supplements.  At the very least check for interactions at a website such as:

http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/Home/AllAboutDrugs

Nutritional supplements can interact with prescription meds just the same as some prescription meds interact with each other.  Better safe than sorry where your health is concerned.

Oxygen is an excellent abortive.  Works for most people when used properly.  Defintely try this.  As well as it works, I have a hard time understanding why more doctors do not prescribe it.  If your doc won't prescribe it for you, you might try welder's O2.  It's the same pure oxygen used by medical suppliers.  Many people here use it and would be more than happy to help you set it up.  Here is a link that tells about using O2 and shows a setup using welder's O2.

Again, welcome to CH.com.  There's no better place in the world for info and support.

Brian- hope you were able to get some relief!  We all understand and hope you stick around.  I wasn't so sure about these crazies when I first came here but have to say I will be part of this community forever, even when not in cycle.  You will find a ton of good info here and suggestions on treatments you wouldn't normally find other places.  They have all helped me tremendously and here's hoping you find some relief.  You've been added to my prayer list - hope that is ok.

Karen who is now one of the "crazies"

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I got back from the Dr. with the Imitrex injector, and some O2. My guess is I'll be trying one of those either tonight or tomorrow. It's been so long since I was on the Pred. that I don't remember what the taper was, but I remember not sleeping much, and when I did I had the most bizzare dreams.

Brian, Before you blast yourself with the full trex shot. Take a look at the Imitrex tip on the side bar. Many people get relief with 1/3 or 1/2 shots. It will stretch the med.
