Title: finally an answer to my pain. Post by Dave_B. on Nov 20th, 2004, 12:36am My whole family recently came down with this virus, it caused pneumonia in 3 of us, and I thought it left me with a sinus infection. After going through the anti-biotics, I asked the doc why I was still suffering the sinus attacks, after describing the symptoms and thier duration, she tells me I'm having cluster headaches. After I researched it on the internet, and found this site, I came to the conclusion that those migranes I've suffered in the past were CH's. I almost cried when I read the list of symptoms on the headache care site, and realized it was describing me to the letter. It scared the bejesus out of me. I've suffered with these godawful headaches since I was 17, and I always thought they were migranes. I'm glad to finally find out what is going on, kind of in shock since there is no cure for it. I really need support from someone who knows, my family does'nt understand what I'm going through, and it's hard on all of us. Well I've babbled enough for now. I;ll be stopping by quite often. Later. Dave B. |

Title: Re: finally an answer to my pain. Post by Ronny on Nov 20th, 2004, 5:47am Hi, did you read the links to the left? Did the doc give you any medication? Was it a neuro or a gp? There is no cure but it can be treated. Ronny. |

Title: Re: finally an answer to my pain. Post by Bob_Johnson on Nov 20th, 2004, 6:10am Suggest you get either the second or third titles for a coherent, organized way of learning about your new "discovery". HANDBOOK OF HEADACHE MANAGEMENT, 2nd ed., Au. Joel Saper, MD, 1999, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. A highly condensed volume for doctors but good for "advanced" clusterheads who have a grasp of medical terminology and medications. Covers all types of headache with the section on cluster being brief. Sections on general considerations in treatment and on medications are important. MANAGEMENT OF HEADACHE AND HEADACHE MEDICATIONS, 2nd ed. Lawrence D. Robbins, M.D.; pub. by Springer. $49 at Amazon.Com. This volume is better organized and easier to read for nonprofessionals compared to Saper's book. It covers all types of headache and is primarily focused on medications. While the two chapters on CH total 42-pages, the actual relevant material is longer because of multiple references to material in chapters on migraine, reflecting the overlap in drugs used to treat. I'd suggest reading the chapters on migraine for three reasons: he makes references to CH & medications which are not in the index; there are "clinical pearls" about how to approach the treatment of headache; and, you gain better perspective on the nature of headache, in general, and the complexities of treatment (which need to be considered when we create expectations about what is possible). Finally, women will appreciate & benefit from his running information on hormones/menstrual cycles as they affect headache. Chapter on headache following head trauma, also. Obviously, I'm impressed with Robbins' work (even if the book needs the touch of a good editor!) (Somewhat longer review/content statement at 3/22/00, "Good book....") HEADACHE HELP, Revised edition, 2000; Lawrence Robbins, M.D., Houghton Mifflin, $15. Written for a nonprofessional audience, it contains almost all the material in the preceding volume but it's much easier reading. Highly recommended. |
