Title: Hi everyone...new to this
Post by charmed on Sep 20th, 2004, 2:48pm
Hi everyone,
after around 2 months of severe headaches I was diagnosed with cluster headaches today. They just started suddenly, before that I rarely had headaches, could never have imagined anything like this :(
I've been told to keep a record of what I eat to look for triggers, also prescribed paramax..but after reading up about C/H online doesn't sound like best idea, but on the packaging says its for migraines so see how it goes.

Charmed,

So sorry that you are in pain.  I am glad, though, that you got diagnosed quickly.  It takes some people years to get a diagnosis.  I don't know anything about paramax, you can read up on meds here, and I am sure someone will be along shortly who knows more than me.  Most people round here take Verapimil as a preventative, and Imitrex and Oxygen as an abortive.  Poke around, read up, and welcome.  This is a supportive family, and I know that we will all do everything we can to help you out.
Tell us a bit more about yourself.  What are your symptoms?  Are you on any other meds than the Paramax?  As for triggers, all I can tell you is that different people have different ones.  It seems kind of random to me.  But one common one is alchohol while in a cylce.  That does it for me every time.

Sorry you have Clusters, but really glad you are here. ;)

Casey

Thank-you for welcome :)
I never know what to say when i get asked about myself! I'm student from Scotland.
Other symtoms I have with the headaches are pain sort of behind my left eye and it waters aswell (although the pain has me in tears anyway) also nausea.
I dont drink or smoke so that wont be a trigger for me.
I'm glad I found this site, reading that other people go through it aswell is a bit reassuring..... although I am so sorry to hear that other people have to suffer :(
I just feel that I'm dreading having another one..just the thought of it is horrible.

ashley :)

Hi Ashley
Welcome to the board but sorry you've been diagnosed with CH. There's lots of great info on this site and also at the British site OUCH UK so read up and get educated. There are things that can help!

    All the best Filbert.

Many migraine medicines help with clusters - but not all.  Because clusters are relatively rare, the government agencies  may not list it.  The paracetamol is unlikely to help - aspirin, acetominophen and the others are pretty useless in clusters. Not sure about the metoclopramide.  What kind of relief does it give you?

Ashley,
Are you in Scotland currently?  If so, where are you going to school?  I am currently at the University of Edinburgh for a couple more months, and would be happy to get together and talk about Clusters, doctors, meds, and whatever else you want to.

Now that I think of it, I have never met another Clusterhead in person!  Now I really hope you are in Edinburgh...
Let me know.

Casey

Welcome and I'm sorry you have joined our ranks.  If you stick around here and at OUCH UK, you'll find a lot of good information about dealing with this horror.

At least you have a diagnosis and as horrible as it is, it's one less thing to worry about.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

Charlie

I didn't think the paracetamol would help with the headache..but it did help with the nausea. Dr just wanted to try it and see how things went, she told me to come back if it wasn't helping. and we can try something else. I was suprised she wanted to try the paracetamol, before I went to the drs whenever i got a headache i did take regular paracetamol and it done nothing.
Casey I'm studying at the university of glasgow :)
Not too far away from Edingburgh. I really appreciate all the help from everyone.

Ashley,

Glasgow is not too far from Edinburgh.  Unfortunately, if you are from Glasgow, if we got together I probably wouldn't be able to understand you. ;)

Just kidding.

Hey, if you still want to get together and talk I would be happy to.  Just let me know.  I hope that you get some relief soon from your pain.  We all know how bad it hurts...

Casey

Thank-you for the offer casey :)
I'm not actually from Glasgow so you would be able to understand me..I know what the glasgow accent is like though!
I've noticed that since C/H started I seem to be a lot more aware of any slight pains in my head. I was thinking about that today, every now and again i can feel a sort of twinge behind my left eye, it got to the point with the stabbing feeling in the centre of my eye and could feel the headache starting, as soon as that happened tried the paramax again and also drank as much water as i could. Things didn't get as bad as usual, i think it was the water instead of the paramax. (not that i'm complaining!). This one "only" lasted about 1hr 30 mins.
It's strange how they come at the same time. For me its usually early evening.
I'm longing for remission to kick in :(
How long does the pain-free periods last for you guys?

ashley.

Hi,

I think it is common, at least i have that too.

About the pain free times, it is different for everyone i guess, for some it is weeks, for others even years.

Ronny, years sounds good.

Is what I'm describing (about the twinges) is that what you call shadows? I was reading up about them but I wasn't sure.

Ashley,
Sorry about the news.Concerning shadows, being episodic myself twinges with a constant dull ache about a 2 or 3 on the Kip scale are considered shadows. I call it a CH parked and running. Hope the demon leaves you soon. Study ,Study knowledge is power !!!

Hello Charmed  :)

There are hundreds of people here that know a lot more about the best meds to take, than I do.
But what I do know is - since I found this website I've learned to laugh about it  (sounds cheesy, I know)

This wont help you when it feels like a needle is stuck in your eye,  BUT  it does help if your anxious about when your gonna get hit again .
We know it will come back, we know it will hurt,
but knowing it wont last forever, and that it cant break our sense of humour, kinda softens the fear factor.

At least it does for me  ;)
