Title: Newbie here but long time sufferer
Post by Darlyc on Sep 3rd, 2004, 9:41pm
Hi, I have had cluster headaches for over 18 years. I was in remission for 3 years but last year they came back. Mine are always in September. I was a non-smoker for the 3 years they were gone but due to cumulative stress I am back a smoker and it is September and I am started to see some signs. Scared to death. I will have 8 weeks of them.

I really want to know about St. John's Wort. I feel depressed and stressed and usually that brings them on too. I have a new neurologist appt in 2 weeks.

I am a strong believer in oxygen therapy. I have used it twice. It makes the attacks shorter.

Any advice about the St. John's Wort? I know I need to quit the cigarettes and quit them fast.

Thanks guys for your input. :-/

Hi and welcome to the board - not sure what the St johns wart thing is but 02 is the best! It has saved my partner (as well as all the support from this board).

All i know about St johns wart is that is was the antibiotic that was used in the victorian age! Not sure about its effect on CH - cant see any though!

I know I need to quit the cigarettes and quit them fast.Giving up the smokes is always a positive move. Cluster sufferers seem to smoke more than the general population. I am a smoker. I have smoked before, during and after attacks and it didn't seem to matter one way or the other for me. I smoked for at least 6 years before I had my first cluster.

There is a wealth of information under the buttons on the left side of your screen. Read it, print it, educate yourself so you can talk with authority to your neurologist.

I'm not a doctor and what I said above is only my opinion.

Welcome Darlyc,

Yes, you should quit smoking. It's not gonna do squat to end your cycle, but it'll make you a healthier person.

Hope you cycle is a short one this time around.

Bob, who smokes like a chimney.

If I were you, I would wait until later to quit smoking.  When in a cluster cycle, you're already under great stress, and trying to kick the habit will only add to it (a lot).

By the way, I was a smoker for many, many years and was only able to give it up 8 years ago.  I know how hard it is, assuming you're a true addict, as I was.

Anyway, here are a hundred wishes for more pain-free times--
