Title: Is what I am haveing a Cluster Headache?
Post by bprestridge on Aug 4th, 2004, 10:27am
This is kinda embaraseing, I have read about the simtooms of a cluster headache and they are the closest match to my condtions. I am haveing these when I have intercourse, this is the only time but they are very very sharp. Is this a cluster head ache or something different?

Probably not a cluster, but only doctors can diagnose you.

Quote:
SEXUAL BENIGN HEADACHES

Headaches can be associated with sexual activity, especially with orgasm. There are two types of these headaches. In the first type, the excitement accompanying intercourse causes muscle contraction in the head and neck, thus leading to head pain.

The second type is a vascular headache. It is a very intense, severe headache usually occurring just before orgasm. It has been called an "orgasmic headache," or "orgasmic cephalalgia." In some instances, the headache is a response to an increase in blood pressure, in which the blood vessels dilate. The headache is not usually related to the amount of physical exertion involved in intercourse. The pain may be located around or behind the eyes. It usually lasts a few minutes, but can last for hours. The headache is usually made worse by movement. The headache most often is a "benign" orgasmic headache; however, the possibility of organic disease should be thoroughly investigated.

A headache occurring with orgasm could be a symptom of a brain hemorrhage (bleeding around or inside the brain), stroke or tumor. An accompanying stiffness in the neck may be an indication of bleeding into the spinal fluid.

The benign orgasmic headache occurs more frequently in men than women and usually strikes migraine sufferers. Benign orgasmic headache is often effectively treated with migraine medications such as blood-vessel constricting agents, taken before intercourse.

Have to agree with floridian, probably not a cluster.  You would be getting sharp pains without the sexual activity, though in my experience sex during a CH does make it worse.

However, CH seems to manifest in different ways with different people.  The questions to the left are the most common.  Also, you may have more than one thing going on in combination with the CH's.

One thing that struck me in floridians post was the last paragraph:

The benign orgasmic headache occurs more frequently in men than women and usually strikes migraine sufferers. Benign orgasmic headache is often effectively treated with migraine medications such as blood-vessel constricting agents, taken before intercourse.

Perhaps having something  like caffeine prior to intercourse would help..

As always, find a good a doc.

Best wishes,

John

That thought occurred to me - The ghost of Ted can be anywhere.  Our spell-challenged accupuncturist could have posted this one, which would be highlaryes.  Or it could be somebody that someone holds their breath too long and triggers a headache at the exact wrong moment.  Any way, they probably need to look elsewhere.

I heard about that recently... They're also called "coital headaches" (sp?).

Please be more specifc - which head is aching during intercourse?

Also...

Does this change things from "Not tonight, dear, I've got a headache" to "Not tonight, dear, I'll get a headache"?

And of course; from the few posts on intercourse, the opposite is true. Erections have been often helpful.

Ted? Could be, could damn well be. "simtooms." That's hard to swallow.  ;;D  hehehe
