Title: newly self-diagnosed
Post by girlshavechtoo on Jul 1st, 2004, 7:39pm
Hi there! I am a medical professional, and having suffered from these irritating head monsters on and off for years - currently in a cycle of pretty severe ones - I decided to find out just what the heck was the matter with me -  and found out it...it...it has a name!!! I feel better already! After reading some posts, I realize that my suffering is not nearly as bad as it is for many others. I have gone for 2 years without one before. They just began again about 8 months ago. I guess they started in my late 20's. I do suffer from seasonal allergies and there is definitely a correlation. I find it interesting that it is more common in males. Possibly a hormone connection? I have occasionally been awakened with one, but usually they occur in the morning and afternoons.  I usually treat them with Ibuprofen and decongestants. These medicines seem to reduce the frequency and severity, but do not prevent the attacks.  I also use a massager on my face and temples when I'm at home and that helps a lot! Moderate alcohol consumption (ie: one glass of wine) does not seem to worsen my symptoms, but more than that does. I am interested in trying oxygen therapy. Luckily, I have access to oxygen in my work - so I'm going to give that a try and see how it works! Thanks for having a place where I can share my woes. And I hope that everyone out there gets relief!!

Welcome...

Ibuprofen and decongestants? [smiley=huh.gif]

What's that do?

Could you explain in detail the pain and severity of your headache and where it's located? How long d they last, how many per day, and how long are the cycles?

I'm sorry you're in pain, but I'd be interested too.

I can assure you, clusters aren't made tolerable by aspirin, tylenol, ibuprofen, decongestants, antihistamines, codiene, vicodin, percodan, etc., etc. (though on occasion a megadose of Demeral might help).

Please use caution in trying to diagnose and treat yourself.  You could do more harm than good.  See a CHA specialist.  As a health professional, you probably have some inside knowledge on who would be good.

Keep us informed - best wishes,

Kris

I'm glad that you found this site.  I'll echo what was said before and suggest that you contact a neurologist or at the very least see your PCP.  It is possible that your h/a's do come in the mornings and afternoons but for most people with CH they come right after they fall asleep or in the middle of the night. For the majority of CH sufferers decongestants and other OTC's like Tylenol, Advil are ineffective.  I'm sure if you went to a neuro they'd be able to better identify the problem you are have and be able to offer some advice. Good luck. I really hope everything works out. Sam

I had a KIP 9  once that was  so annoying that I left work early and went and took a nap.

Will someone please put up a Migraine link to help this girl.

Get the second title: best of the three for someone in medicine.
---

HANDBOOK OF HEADACHE MANAGEMENT, 2nd ed., Au. Joel Saper, MD, 1999, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. A highly condensed volume for doctors but good for "advanced" clusterheads who have a grasp of medical terminology and medications. Covers all types of headache with the section on cluster being brief. Sections on general considerations in treatment and on medications are important.

MANAGEMENT OF HEADACHE AND HEADACHE MEDICATIONS, 2nd ed. Lawrence D. Robbins, M.D.; pub. by Springer. $49 at Amazon.Com. This volume is better organized and easier to read for nonprofessionals compared to Saper's book. It covers all types of headache and is primarily focused on medications. While the two chapters on CH total 42-pages, the actual relevant material is longer because of multiple references to material in chapters on migraine, reflecting the overlap in drugs used to treat. I'd suggest reading the chapters on migraine for three reasons: he makes references to CH & medications which are not in the index; there are "clinical pearls" about how to approach the treatment of headache; and, you gain better perspective on the nature of headache, in general, and the complexities of treatment (which need to be considered when we create expectations about what is possible). Finally, women will appreciate & benefit from his running information on hormones/menstrual cycles as they affect headache. Chapter on headache following head trauma, also. Obviously, I'm impressed with Robbins' work (even if the book needs the touch of a good editor!) (Somewhat longer review/content statement at 3/22/00, "Good book....")

HEADACHE HELP, Revised edition, 2000; Lawrence Robbins, M.D., Houghton Mifflin, $15. Written for a nonprofessional audience, it contains almost all the material in the preceding volume but it's much easier reading. Highly recommended.

This one sounds like one of my early doctors" take two
asprin and lay down in a dark room till the pain goes away". yea right

Just to echo what the others have said. You need to see a specialist as from what little you have put down here, it sounds nothing like CH.

I get migraine as well, and it can be incredibly painful, can come in groups or 'clusters' and does occur episodically, so I am not saying you are not suffering. Also I use oxygen therapy for CH and migraine now, so it probably won't do any harm to try it, but you really need a proper diagnosis first.

BUT

CH is known as the "suicide headache" not the "irritating headache", for very good reason.

And you call this a support group? Jeez - I just wanted to commisserate w/ others but guess you don't allow that unless I have a definitive diagnosis from a physician. By the way - where did you all get your medical degrees from??? Just so you know - I have spoken to my PCP about these ipsilateral headachces that I get every 3-4 months for a month or two that last about 15-30 minutes and  make my eye water and all I get is "sounds like a bad headache." Why Ibuprofen and decongestants work...I  don't know the exact reason - but why not? And yes, I do know the difference between what I suffer from and a migraine. Oh well, so much for this site.

Shame on you all - you chased her away!  You also killed a fascinating thread.  There's nothing I like better than hearing "health professionals" talk about their successful self-diagnosis.

One has not to be a  full-fledged biologist to know the difference between a cat and a dog.

Quote:

There is no such thing as an 'ipsilateral headachce'. Since "ipsilateral" means on the same side as ..., your headaches can not be ipsilateral on their own, you must say to what they are ipsilateral. A medical professional should know that.

Quote:

I can tell you why they work for you, you are lucky you've got no clusterheadaches. Every clusterhead tried once upon a time ibuprofen and other OTC stuff and knows it doesn't put a dent to CH.

Quote:
And you call this a support group? Jeez -
In a good support group like this one you get several answers within a couple of hours, welcoming you and asking you on details of your 'irritating' headaches. But you choose not to replay and come back only 5 days later to complain, to play the slighted victim.

I hear that migraines can be pretty bad and can hurt like the forecourt of hell. If your other headaches deserve the attribute 'irritating' they cannot be clusters; CH hurt like hell itself.

Don't let the door hit your sorry ass.

Now someone else is going to the Munchausen support web site and bad mouth us because we didn't let her have CH.

Whether ya have CH (hopefully not) or migraines or are just looking for advice on SHAVING it has been a damn good place to be this past month!!

Take it light "Girl Shaves Choo"

Seriously lighten up, for this place really goes beyond support and at times all will need thick skins because when going deep in cycle and getting hit hard "we" may not always be the nicest  or compassionate to some.

Just an observation.

Now go shave  ;;D kidding

Yes. I learned 99% more than I knew about this horror from these boards and sites.

Hitting a clusterhead attack with over the counter drugs is like trying to knock out an elephant with a peanut.

Tell us; do these headaches wake you out of a sound sleep and can you sit still during these attacks.

Hope you have some success with your headaches.

Oh sure, now that's lovely, let's degrade people from the south.  One of my absolute favorite people in the world is from Arkansas, and you'd better hope she doesn't see that.  I guess one of your symptoms is the virtual lack of a sense of humor.

Thomas

Is your huge tool draining blood from your brain again?

Now there's a thought for a survey! Do all male cluster sufferers have huge penises and the amount of blood needed to make them erect creates a problem in the blood supply in the brain?

When was the next convention again? I can bring the tape measure! ;;D
