Title: Concussions and Clusters Post by javlin on Nov 8th, 2005, 11:40am I have had six concussions in my life and knocked in variuos degrees four times. My neuro doc does not think that they are clusters.Just the little quick quiz i hit all the numbers but one the length. This might be because I wake so os and by 9:30am things start.I take a migrane pill and a tramadol most of the times it works ok.My left eye goes bloodshot red when its really bad and I am highly agitated and agressive.I just want to be left alone figure out your own problems.Lside goes weak and much confusion and I am slow like now.I do not seem to have the severe pain some talk about but onlt occassionally. It just started up a again a few weeks ago it was funny when I saw the waking up in the middle of the night me it's 4:00am.No pain just wake have a tough time going to sleep afterwards if I can.The 2nd attack usually takes place in the afternnon about 2:30pm.This one at times has brought the ice pick more often.I don't know just getting fricken confused more now.If I had time I would force myself to run always seems to help.I guess it's more meds. |

Title: Re: Concussions and Clusters Post by BarbaraD on Nov 8th, 2005, 2:16pm jav, Don't know if what you have is Ch or not. I have post traumatic concussion headaches as well as arthritic migraines and CH. sometimes it's hard to figure out which one is hitting. And since I take different things for each one - I have to wait and make sure (hate to take meds on a whim). What is tramadol? I'm not familiar with that one. Why not try some O2 and see if that helps. It beats meds by a long shot. Or some strong black coffee at the onset. Something about the caffine seems to abort CH sometimes. Keep a log of when they hit and the duration. Read everything to the left and keep the log for your neuro. Let us know what happens with you. Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Concussions and Clusters Post by javlin on Nov 8th, 2005, 9:43pm It's a non-narcotic pain med. also taking a non-narcotic migraine right now.It seems to work and yea I do run and that helps the xtra o2 to the brain. It seems to be only temporary though. It's like clockwork for the last 3 weeks wake up at about 4:00am 3-5 days a week. The morning bout is usually the worst @ about 9-10 am.Then another between 2-3 pm.It might not be CH I go back to the doc on the 18th.Mine does not seem to be as severe as what I read about though.I just become confused.face goes numb,Lside weak, agitated and just fatigued but can't sleep. After 4-5 pm I am good for the most part.Read everything to the L? |

Title: Re: Concussions and Clusters Post by javlin on Nov 23rd, 2005, 10:37pm Well I made it to the doc(pysch).I was figuring this was all brought on somewhat by Katrina the depression and all.He started me on Topomax and that stuff was terrible actually brought the attacks on more severly. Then he wanted to do Depekote I said NO been there done that one to(lost alot of hair). He's thinking partial seizures possibilly with migranes maybe. The second clutch he 's thinking I might be bi-polar some.I mentioned clusters his response was you treat both migraines and clusters much the same. The med I did decide on was one the neuro gave me last year this same time was amitriptyline. It worked last time just takes awhile to get to the 150mg level.See how it goes from here.Maybe doc may do some more research on clusters.I do not know if mine are CH just maybe alot of similiarities. |

Title: Re: Concussions and Clusters Post by BarbaraD on Nov 26th, 2005, 6:46am How long did you take the topamax? It usually takes a little while to get in your system. Try taking the whole dose at night before bedtime. It's worked wonders for me without side effects, but I take it before bedtime and not during the day. Amiytriptiline (or however you spell it) knocked me on my butt and I couldn't wake up for days on a minimum dose, but we all react differently to meds. Try Melatonin at bedtime (9-12mg) to get you thru the REM sleep. That also takes several weeks to get in your system so don't expect it to work the first dose you take. My neuro treats a lot of CH patients as well as migrainers (he also suffers from migraines) and is having good luck with topamax in migraines as well as clusters. I keep cafergot and phenergan in the cabinet in case the O2 and coffee don't abort a bad one. And phenergan and Aleve for the arthritic migraines (naproxin - two Aleve are the same as the script they gave me). The main thing is to hit on what's RIGHT for YOU and stick to it. That's the hard part - finding what's right for each of us. There's no "one size fits all" for CH. It took years and hundreds of tries to hit on something that worked for me and I'm sure everyone else will tell you the same. Good luck... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Concussions and Clusters Post by cazman on Nov 26th, 2005, 11:03am 4 concutions, stabbed 3 times, shot once, 14 broken bones,to many drugs, to much booze, and with all of that i really really doubt that it has anything to due with the beast , the vaiables between suffers are huge its nice to think that there is an external reason that we all have encountered to explain the beast but the fact is there are billions of possible explanations and to think about it over and over will drive you insane i know i did it for years and i have papers to prove im nuts lol. |

Related Articles, Links Cluster headache following head injury: a case report and review of the literature. Turkewitz LJ, Wirth O, Dawson GA, Casaly JS. Midwest Center for Head-Pain Management, Troy, Ohio 45373. A relation between head trauma and cluster headache is frequently described in the literature. The percentage of cluster patients with a history of head injury is approximately 16.5 when several large studies are reviewed. The present paper reports another case where there is close proximity between head injury and the onset of cluster headache. A review of the literature attempts to document the supposition that there is indeed a causal or precipitous role for head injury in cluster cephalgia pathogenesis.
