Title: O2 in Arizona Post by marlinsfan on Jun 28th, 2005, 8:24am Hi all, I have a week long business trip in July to Arizona (yeah, I know, july in AZ....), and I'm a little freaked out about not being able to bring my O2. The airline told me that the FAA does not allow O2 on airplanes. What do you all do when you travel? Does anyone know of any place in/near Carefree Arizona where I can get O2? If so, should I bring my mask and regulator? I'm leaving saturday July 9th, returning to FLA on the 15th. Thanks and PF wishes to all. Jose |

Title: Re: O2 in Arizona Post by Bob_Johnson on Jun 28th, 2005, 11:15am I suspect that carrying an Rx with you and trying to arrange for a source will just about eat up the time of your trip. This is a good argument for finding an abortive med to use even if you choose to not use it routinely. The least expensive abortive (compared to Imitrex injection) is Zyprexa, 5mg. Ask you doc for a sample NOW and try it. It is works, then either get more samples or a small Rx to carry with you. ----- 1: Headache 2001 Sep;41(8):813-6 Olanzapine as an Abortive Agent for Cluster Headache. Rozen TD. Department of Neurology, Jefferson Headache Center/Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate olanzapine as a cluster headache abortive agent in an open-label trial. BACKGROUND: Cluster headache is the most painful headache syndrome known. There are very few recognized abortive therapies for cluster headache and fewer for patients who have contraindications to vasoconstrictive drugs. METHODS: Olanzapine was given as an abortive agent to five patients with cluster headache in an open-label trial. The initial olanzapine dose was 5 mg, and the dose was increased to 10 mg if there was no pain relief. The dosage was decreased to 2.5 mg if the 5-mg dose was effective but caused adverse effects. To be included in the study, each patient had to treat at least two attacks with either an effective dose or the highest tolerated dose. RESULTS: Five patients completed the investigation (four men, one woman; four with chronic cluster, one with episodic cluster). Olanzapine reduced cluster pain by at least 80% in four of five patients, and two patients became headache-free after taking the drug. Olanzapine typically alleviated pain within 20 minutes after oral dosing and treatment response was consistent across multiple treated attacks. The only adverse event was sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS: Olanzapine appears to be a good abortive agent for cluster headache. It alleviates pain quickly and has a consistent response across multiple treated attacks. It appears to work in both episodic and chronic cluster headache. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Olanzapine has a brand name of "Zyprexa" and is a antipsychotic. Don't be put off by this primary usage. Several of the drugs used to treat CH are cross over applications, that is, drugs approved by the FDA for one purpose which are found to be effective with unrelated conditions--BJ. |

Title: Re: O2 in Arizona Post by lionsound on Jun 28th, 2005, 11:36am Hi Jose, I don't know where you get your O2 from. If it's a medical supplier sometimes they can help you locate some on the other end of traveling. for example: I use Apria Healthcare and they have branches all over the country. Including Maine, Florida and in Phoenix too. Carefree is near Phoenix, so there are bound to be tons of suppliers there. You can find one and call in advance. And yes it is a very good idea to bring your mask and regulator. Be well and PF, lionsound |

Title: Re: O2 in Arizona Post by marlinsfan on Jun 28th, 2005, 12:25pm Thanks to both! Lionsound: I actually called All-Med (my FLA O2 supplier), and the gave me the name of Reliable Medical Products in Phoenix, they're not related but refer clients/patients to each other. I spoke with a lady there just now, and it seems like she'll be setting everything up so that the O2 will be waiting for me at the hotel when I check in! Thanks for your PM too! And especially thanks for the tip!! PF days to all! Jose |
