Title: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Apr 11th, 2005, 9:13am I don't know how it goes with anyone else but, when I'm in cycle, a nap is almost a promise to get slammed really bad. Yesterday, I did my normal Sunday afternoon thing. Turn on the NASCAR race, watch the first hundred laps, fall asleep for a little power nap, WHAM!!!! I woke up with a screaming head. The only time I ever get hit bad in the day time is if I take a nap. Otherwise, it's just shadows and the big ones come at night. |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by nani on Apr 11th, 2005, 10:38am I've seen quite a few folks complain about that Pat. Especially the folks who get hit at night. It makes sense. If you get hit because of your sleep stages, naps would have stages also. Personally, it's not a problem for me. I almost never get hit at night either. Which must mean I go through my sleep stages when I'm awake. [smiley=huh.gif] Hmmmm Might explain a few things. :-/ |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by Marta on Apr 11th, 2005, 5:00pm Hi EEB, How's it going? I finally (!!!!) had a 2 hour nap this afternoon and didn't wake up to a killer HA (ok, I did have a crunchy neck but no murderous head). I had taken a downer to get me to sleep but in the past that hadn't made a difference, the CHs would be hammering painfully on the inside of my head within about half an hour. I'll see what happens tonight and will report back. Good luck Marta [smiley=huh.gif] |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by BlueMeanie on Apr 11th, 2005, 6:40pm For me a nap really doesn't trigger. My hits are pretty much same time everyday both day & night. If I where to nap at the normal hit time, then of course I'll wake with an attack. Episodic... |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by Marta on Apr 12th, 2005, 3:29am Hi EEB, Right, I had an attack at half past two last night and again at seven this morning. I took a shot of imigram (trex?) at half two and I took a teeny tiny bit of a shot this am. I'm feeling fine now but for how long..................? I also didn't take my verapamil last night and I'm sure my BP has already gone up some which has helped loads. The journey continues. Good luck to you, ok? Marta |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by Cynde on Jun 30th, 2005, 10:33pm ALWAYS! So when I'm in a cluster episode, I have to be very careful not to nap, or I'll wake up with a killer. Even sitting still too quietly can trigger them, so I tend to be more hyper than usual during episodes, finding lots to do during the day so I'm not even tempted to nap. And the worst is those rare times when I acciodentally fall asleep at the pool, in the shade, then the sun invades the shady spot while I'm asleep -- INSTANT TRIGGER! With the new theories tying the hypothalamus and CH, and the hypo's role in regulating awake-sleep cycles, there must be something about napping that disrupts the cycle and ultimately results in pain. Just my guesses... |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by bnfreeman on Jun 30th, 2005, 11:15pm It used to not bother me, but the last nap I had I woke up the a strong shadow. Now I have to keep busy all day. The minute I sit down I feel shadows coming on. I get hit around 6pm and 10pm most of the time. Maybe because it's my down time. Who knows. I love taking naps, but now I'm scared. BF |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by marlinsfan on Jul 1st, 2005, 8:08am I get hit when I nap, every time, no matter how long I nap. Most my hits come when I sleep, so it makes sense. So I don't nap when in cycle now. When I first joined this board, I read somewhere that "naps R not us". Sums it up pretty well. Jose |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by Cynde on Jul 1st, 2005, 9:12am Question for all of you. My mom commented to me that I've always had trouble with napping -- I apparently stopped napping very young, to the consternation of my caretakers, and when I do nap I often feel groggy upon awakening. I have always had good sleep at night, though (well, 'til menopause, which disrupts it). I'm wondering whether anyone else here was an early no-napper (like before age 2 1/2 to 3), and whether there might be something programmed into us that inherently makes napping a sleep disruptor, which then triggers the devil. My hubby can nap and feel great, but our son (who takes after me in so many ways) was also an early non-napper, and I don't want him to suffer these as he gets older. Just curious... |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by Bob P on Jul 1st, 2005, 9:18am From Prof. Goadsby: "Patients should be advised to abstain from alcohol during the cluster bout. Otherwise, dietary factors seem to have little importance in CH. Anecdotal evidence suggest that patients should be cautioned against prolonged exposure to volatile substances, such as solvents and oil-based paints. They should be instructed to avoid afternoon naps because sleeping can precipitate attacks in some patients." |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by drhbooks on Jul 1st, 2005, 9:31am Naps give me headaches about 75 percent of the time... never occured to me that the length of the nap might make a difference. Now that I've got Oxygen again I might get brave enough to try a short nap this weekend.... |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by BMoneeTheMoneeMan on Jul 9th, 2005, 10:27pm I have noticed that taking a nap is bad news during the nap and at bed time. Good luck & PF wishes BMonee |

I get about an hour worth of sleep and wake up with a cluster, im not sure what is worse, the ch or the lack of sleep from the ch. some nights i can sleep fine, other nights like tonight, i get an hour and wake up. there is something funny about this cycle that is different and i have been suffering for 20 years. |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by Limey on Jul 11th, 2005, 4:34am I read in a magazine we have in England about headaches that when you nap you lie on your back which can trigger headaches but if you sleep for the night you lie on your front or side which doesn't. |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by hdbngr on Jul 11th, 2005, 1:56pm Anyone ever notice a connection between dreaming and CH attacks? I can nap, but if I'm down long enough to start to dream, that is when the screamers hit. Anyone remember if they are dreaming when the pain hits? Wonder if that is the connection between exceeding 45 minutes, maybe that is how long it takes to hit the dream stage? |

The connection between dreaming and being attacked is really just a coincidence. It's at the REM (rapid eye movement) sleep mode when the headaches start. That is also when dreaming takes place. Some people get into the REM in 45 minutes and some can take a couple hours. Remember dreaming? I have been awakend, more than once, by a cluster and remember I was dreaming about having a headache. |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by outwitt on Jul 20th, 2005, 1:51pm Naps are triggers! Pillow pressure on the occipital area is a trigger. The shampoo girl at the haircutters squeezed the neck and triggered it. Sitting stationary for >45 min is a trigger........long drives or a night at the movies require frequent breaks. I usually set an alarm if I nap......and watch TV sitting upright. YES......a simple nap...one of life's pleasures...is no longer afforded us...... Be careful!! |

Title: Re: Do you get hit when you nap??? Post by BMoneeTheMoneeMan on Jul 22nd, 2005, 5:20pm Yeah, absolutely. While i am taking a nap, and especially when i go to bed that night, it is always a bad nite. I dont take naps anymore, cause i am too tired of getting cornholed all the time. It used to be my daily schedule cause i worked early in the morning, and also late at night. So i would take a nap every day at about noon for a couple hours. After I realized that naps trigger multiple CHs, i dont take naps anymore, even on days that i have gotten 3 hours sleep and up with CHs all night long. Its a vicious cycle. I used to take a nap BECAUSE i couldnt sleep all night, so then i would get more clusters, so then i would take a nap, and i would get more clusters....... it was a bad cycle. No naps for me anymore BMonee ;) |
