Title: Do you grow out of CH?
Post by pajak on Mar 31st, 2005, 8:07am

When I was younger I was told I would grow out of CH in my30s.  Now I've started my 40s and I still have these killer clusters.  If anyone knows please let me know.

Hope your CHs aren't giving you too much of a had time today.

Some people do. Some don't. Some don't start getting them until later in life. That's the thing about CH. Everybody's different. I hope it's true for me. I've had them for 32 years (since age 16).

I would love to believe that someday I will grow out it, but I am with Nani, it has been 35 years and  they still manage to find me.

Hi there

I have heard (or most likely read), that CH become less frequent after your fifties.

I dont know whether or not that has any basis... can anyone confirm?

Kind regards

that is so sad to hear I'm into 20 yrs with it and up to this point was looking forward to menopause with the thought maybe I could lose the beast, just gonna have to be one of those scarey old cat ladies and scare em away. ;)  If only it were that easy

Take care all,
Maureen

In answer to the question whether CH's diminish when you hit your fifties. In my case a resounding yes. And I have read posts by other older CH sufferers on this board that mirror mine. When I hit my forties (started at age 19), I started having cycles every 2 years or so, instead of every year. Now I'm in my fifties, and am having up to 5 years between episodes. The episode also lasts longer (7 months instead of 2 or 3 months), but the HA's are not as bad, or at least more easily abortable.

Wishful thinking.  Probably not.  It's time to kill Santa Claus.  There are enough people here and in the medical literature that are much older and still have CH (even past their fifties).  If you 'grow out of them', consider yourself lucky and not part of the norm.

As you get older, there may be an increased likelihood of having longer remissions... but then again, maybe not.

Wishin' I could tell you that you'd grow too old to have them - sadly I don't believe it's truem or at least not for me.

I can give you this though - I've been known to skip a cycle here and there but I found the intesity of them was more as I got older.

Good luck!

My doc told me that she had patients in their 70's with active clusters.  I'm 58 and have them under control with the alternative treatment.

BTW, didn't know that CHers would live that long!!  ;;D

Unfortunately for me, (I'm like Nani). They started at 14 and I'm 48 now and I get hit 6 times a day like clockwork. My wife is now in menopause and I don't know how she's getting through it. They diagnosed possible gall stones today and she is scheduled for ultrasound first thing in the morning. And then there is the uncontrollable itching thing WTF. The beautifully mature ladies got it rough, (just when I've learned that they are always right) ;). I'm glad my wife doesn't have CH, but if I could I would take all of her suffering and put on me...she's my supporter :'( . Sorry about that, back to the subject. Like the lyrics from Rush "Presto"... If I could wave my magic wand, I'd make everything alright. Praying for a miracle to stop the demon. Best wishes, Joe

I've outgrown shoes, underwear and flannel shirts, but I haven't outgrown CH. How old is old enough?

Curséd be my luck.

Heeeey.   That "much older" comment is... close to home Steve and spoils my denial of such true facts.

it still happens... oh, the CH.

It is said that many outgrow clusters in middle age.

For me, I go along with Evert.  I started at age 20 and am now 54.  When I turned 40 mine went from a 6 week cluster every 8 or 9 months to an 8 to 16 week cluster every 2 years.  Each remission gets a few months longer, the last one being 3 years and 3 months long.  I am currently in a cycle but the attacks are 2 to 6 on the Kip scale and only last 10 to 15 minutes (that may be due to age, shrooms or kudzu, not sure).

I started getting CH in my early to mid 40's. So, now I'm in my early 60's. The CH is still here.

:)ditto!   Still getting them in my 50's, although more time between episodes than the yearly visits in my 40's.

I sure hope I will... I'll be 25 soon and I've had CH since 2001.

My neuro did tell me to prepare that I'll be living with CH for the rest of my life... We'll see about that.

In the words of my Dr. on my last visit....."this is something you grew into and something you will hopefully grow out of". I just hope he's right.

I used to get mine every two years -- but once, 4 yrs. The last few years it's been 3 years.  However, due to trex, the episodes have extended from 2 to 6+ weeks. I guess that's an improvement, maybe.

Right on....jonny       :-*

I didn't even get CH till my 50's......WTF?     [smiley=huh.gif]

I'm convinced I will have to deal with them from now on.
Just remember...everyone is different.   T'would be great if the CH ended for all of us.   I will always hold on to the hope that it will end....if not for me, then hopefully for some of my clusterbuds.

Mine seem to get worse with age.  I just went chronic this year.  Its been over a year that I have these every week two-three days a week.

Good Vibes
