Title: Something a friend had me try last night...
Post by buckeye_mike on Feb 12th, 2005, 12:21am
I am currently in a cycle and have been for  3  exhausting painful weeks.  A good friend of mone also suffers from clusters and his doc has him tryin this regiment of 10 mins extreme cold, 10 mins hot shower.  well after freezing the towels and puttin one on my neck one on my head and one on my forhead the cold was almost unbearable....after ten mins i hit the hot shower and to be honest it helped tremendously... i went from about  a 7-8 to 2-3............. just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this or tried it?

Its something I used for 20 years. It's also the reason I have dual shower heads/controls in my shower. (well, not the *only* reason but...;)

Hi there!

Lots of us have tried and used cold/hot differences in different forms with CH. Some use also shower (hot shower sometimes triggers my CH), some use ice, I once aborted CH with ice cream! ;;D
Eating my fave ice cream worked only once, but it was still the best-tasting "med" I've ever had!

Anyways, I hope it continues to help you out! It's always good to find something which helps.  :)

Best wishes & PFdays,
Sandie

Yes, I usually will hit the showers first and then go with an ice pack ... it usually helps me a lot!

Yeah, I've long been hanging my head under the shower and flicking it hot to freezing cold - sometimes with excellent results.

Got it badly wrong once, though.  Scalded my scalp and half my hair fell out.  Funny thing was, I never even realised until morning.

I never tried to mix cold with hot water, but i always use hot water on shower to wait the pain finnish, just after i take my sumatriptain.

That helps me a lot on the last 2 years, at least...

Cold is about the only thing that will help if I am low on Trex and at work.  It will at least hold off the Hit until I can take my meds.

The hot shower helps when I feel the shadoews hitting hard at night.

Wow!  Ice Cream.  After 20+ yrs have only started using the ice packs during a cycle.  Don't really think they're helping.  But I certainly am going to pack (hide) a quart of something really good for my next h/a... the old brain freeze trick..haha.

Bye the way, do you find the ice pack more helpful on the temple area or the back of the head/neck?  I would like to know.  THanks Wendy.

BTW... 1.5 wks no h/a!! Crossing fingers.!!!!  and still taking my 360 twice daily of verapamil

Love ya all.

PS  Back surgery is healing FANTASTIC!!!

Congratulations on the back surgery healing up.

I usually put the ice pack on the back of my neck, and if the CH is radiating down into my teeth (Oh god.... That's the WORST!!) then I'll wrap the ice pack around so that I can use it on my neck AND my jaw at the same time.

Great on the Back. That is always a touchy surgery.

I always put the ice to the back.  Will wrap them around to behind the ear and jaw if it is hitting int here, but at the emple does nada.
