Title: Why does shopping for husbands have to be so hard?
Post by Melissa on Nov 28th, 2005, 8:00am
Cripes, my husband is so hard to shop for. >:(  The stuff he DOES want, is usually high end power tools that cost hundreds of dollars, so he ends up buying them himself or I buy it, but he knows I'm getting it for him. :-/

This year, I already have a chainsaw on the way I bought off eBay.  Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7727692874&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

Now my dilemma is if I should get him these binoculars, but am not sure if they'd be ones he'd like or not.  You can see them here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7200053249&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

What do you guys think?  My husband is an outdoors/building/fixing/hunting/fishing/workaholic kind of guy.  He is the only one I have probs buying for every year, LOL.  He said he didn't want anything, as he just built his 1800 sq.ft. garage (along with 1/2 owning a front Payloader with his dad), but Christmas wouldn't feel right if I didn't get him anything from myself and the kids.  (since he is the most giving, generous, kind and loving person I have ever met in my LIFE)

*sigh*

Oh when you said shopping for husbands I got all excited... wondered if they did part exchange or new for old or anything.. oh well. Another lovely daydream shot to bits  ;)

I think binoculars would be a lovely fun present, they aren't a tool or anything "useful" but would fit right in with his hobbies. A few years ago I bought my dad a telescope for Christmas, he laughed and went up to have a look through it to please me and that was the last we saw of him for hours. He really loved it (and it meant I could spend all night on the phone without him moaning.. I love it when everyone's a winner!)

've just bought David some Sparco racing boots so far for his hovercraft racing. Its the World Champs next August so the excitement is building early  :)

Or cash.  ;;D

Cash, Cash, Cash.

Just not his own!

But if you really want to suprise him New hunting knife never misses, and also shotgun is always good too but that costs some. Fishing stuff lures, line, poles, reels, tacklebox. These are sure fire winners since you did say he likes to hunt, fish, and stuff. ;;D

Hope that helps.

Binocs differ enough that you will want to let him select his own.  They are tailored to the given application he plans to use them for.

The chainsaw is sweet... he will be pleased with that.

One idea...
You can buy him a nice little carry knife... such as a Spyderco Delica.. sub-$50

Does he have a Dremel tool?

If so, get him an accessory kit for it...

If not, get him a Dremel.

I -love- my Dremel.

Ok, he has all the fishing stuff he needs, and we both have knives coming out our wazoos.  I'd buy him a gun, but he likes to pick his own.  (I'm getting myself a .38 next year).  I've tried to get him to look at binoc's dozens of times, because he wants one, but he never has the time to do it.  We are going to Scheels this weekend, and he could look at them there, but how the hell would I be able to "surprise" him then?

Oh, and yes he has a Dremel & accessories.  I appreciate all the suggestions, keep them coming!!  Hopefully someone will suggest something I haven't thought of, or that he doesn't have but could use! LOL

Past years I got him a lawn mower, nail gun, miter saw, pressure washer, roto-zip & accessories, saw horses (don't laugh, he really needed them, lol), boot dryer, boots, cammo & blaze orange jackets & pants, fireplace accessories, a transmission for his truck (it was my anniversary gift to him, LOL)...  That's all I can think of off the top of my head right now.

Thanks bunches you guys! :D

Awesome idea Pat!  But he has a furnace he'll be installing in it (it has a heated floor too).

I'll hint around a bit and see if he'd like one anyway. ;)

Donna- I should have probably said that he's not an avid fisherman, but he does enjoy it, when he can go.  I guess that to buy a lot of fishing stuff would be pointless as he has not enough time to fish due to working so much. :-/

Man, I hope I'm not sounding ungrateful here!!  Maybe I should just buy him clothes, LOL. ;;D

Heh heh... Gen 4.  That is military-speak for 'fuckin expensive'.

Here is the same monocular in gen 1 thru 4.
MO-41 Generation 1  $269
MO-42 Generation 2  $1145
MO-43 Generation 3  $2865
MO-43 Generation 3A  $3265
MO-44 Generation 4 $5895

I am thinking about getting something Gen 1'ish.  Do not need it bad enough to pay anything more.

Give us a $$$ range that you have in mind Mel.

Guys like stuff.  Cheap stuff, like knives and tools.  Middle stuff, like boom sticks.
Expensive stuff, like ATV's and dirt bikes.
Really expensive stuff, like Gen4 night vision.

Oh Minnie, that sounds wonderful.  I want to stay in Door County, but that stuff we do spontaneously in the spring.  Awesome site though, I bookmarked it. ;)

Goat, BTDT, lol.

Wrokk, since I already bought the chainsaw, I'm looking to spend about $100-$150 on one more larger ticket item.  Those night things are cool, but too expensive.  Maybe I'll be able to afford them in 10 years. :)  Jesse's not a "stuff" kinda guy.  He is VERY simple.  He will wait a very long time to purchase things he wants.  I don't know where the hell he gets the patience from, cause I sure as hell like stuff NOW, lol.

Mel,
Knit him a cap-and a scarf! Something masculine, something camoflage-ish..........and do not be surprised if he NEVER wears it....it's  simply that you did it for him. Gil has many ties I've made, sweatshirts I've painted....err ok, here's the WHOLE story..... my husband has a Corvette fetish....they are all over my home office....matchbox cars, hot wheels, music boxes.you name it! Even a belt buckle! One year, just to be a brat, I took basic "tidee whitees", removed the fruit of the Loom label, used primary color fabric paints, and stamped the whitees with colorful Vettes, changed the labels to "Undervettes", reminiscent of the popular children's undies called Underoos, and that's what he got from me! (God, I am soo glad he doesnt visit this site!)
Point being, Mel, Gil (almost) always appreciates it when it's something I made especially for him....or he's really good at faking! :o
Guess it's time to surf E-Bay, find something Vette-ish for this year under the tree.......
Happy Wrapping and buying!

Cathi

You all have it made!.  My husband doesn't hunt, fish, watch NASCAR, or golf.  He plays tennis, and there are only so many tennis balls you can give a guy.  He's got three racquets, three warm up suits, the bag big enough to hold the all the "stuff",  What's left?

And, he's picky!   >:(  Years ago, he was a "suit" working for a Fortune 500 company.  I would buy him dress shirts, ties, suits, sport coats and slacks.  He took every last thing back to the store and exchanged it!  Pissed me off Royally.

Now, he's running his own business and wears jeans and a sweatshirt to work.  How many pairs of jeans does a man need?

He has every power tool known to man because we bought a fixer-upper and he has done all of the remodeling himself,

Ask him what he wants for Christmas???  I get bupkiss.

It's gotta be a guy thing because my son-in-law of 6 years is the same way, and my future son-in-law (2nd Christmas) is the same.

MEN!!! >:( >:( >:(

Binocs look good too Mel. I like the looks of them.

At my age, I like things that don't take lot of energy. Nice dvds of something hard to find for example.

My cousin knows the kind of little metal tanks I like for my  eclectic bookshelf display. Stocking stuffers of course.

My dad was the worst. He always blew his Christmas Club on himself. He used it for his toys. He spent even more on us but it made him a tough project. L. L. Bean was a partial solution though.

Good luck Mel. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/santa gifts.gif

Spotting deer from a car?  Big ones.
Looking out around the house?  Big ones.
Packing with him when he hunts?  Compact ones.
Taking to a football game?  Medium ones.

Well, wouldn't you know it, we're sitting this morning watching the news and a chainsaw commercial comes on for Stihl.  I said to him, look, a chainsaw, and he goes yeah, if I get one it'll be one of those or a Husquverra(sp?).  I said, what about Sears?  He said, no, they're a piece of shit and if he buys one, it'll be for life. :(  Well, needless to say my spirits just took a freakin dive.  He took one look at me and knew I bought him one.  He then preceeded to tell me that I should have talked to his dad, or brother, and not to buy him anymore power tools, because he thinks of them as an investment, etc. etc.  He then said he doesn't want anything, I told him it's not what YOU want, it's the joy we, meaning me, Lily and Eli, have of GIVING you something.  He just doesn't get it!!! :'(

I'm sorry for this, but it just breaks my heart.  I was so excited, thinking I got a really good deal, and it's like brand new.  I'm not used to spending hundreds of dollars on ANYTHING, due to my upbringing.  So I guess I'm just taking this hard.

FUCKITOL, I'm buying him clothes.  He never buys his own clothes.  UGH :P

I know how you feel Mel. Last year I bought Deveny a dress.  Two days before Christmas we were in the store
I pointed the dress out and said that would look good on you. She said the only place she would wear that was at a Halloween Party!
Christmas Morning she open that dress and she and I had a good laugh she took it back and got what she wanted.
What I do is I give everyone a piece of paper and say write down 10 things you want for Christmas. They do and I pick a couple of things on the list and add a few things that they have not listed or I get a gift card FOR THEM.

When I saw the title of this thread that was my first thought. I was going to reply with "Shopping for a husband? Why not just go down to the corner bar and steal someone else's." But, I thought better of it after I realized what she really meant.
And this is not a wife-shopping-for-hubby problem. I asked my wife every holiday what she would like and I get "Oh, nothing really. Just can't think of a thing." Last Christmas she said that but I surprized her and got her a really bitchin steering wheel for the hot rod.
Ask me what I want and I could type out a 5 page list, singled spaced, font size 8 and never repeat a thing.

I stopped buyin Brad tools and stuff like that after some of the shit he said the last several times when he open'd the gift.......there I sat hopeing he'd be suprised and happy and all he said was............um......WHY did you buy me 'this'.......there nothin but a piece of shit ! Then he'd proceed to tell me all about what junk the item was. Huh ?? I was crushed. Guys decide a certain brand is 'in or out' and base everything on what they think they know and suddenly 'it's the thought that counts' is thrown out the window. I mean they could of at least worded it better !!?? I felt like such a fool when he did that last time. I'd thought I got him a GREAT gift and was so proud of myself and kept it hidden and couldn't wait to see him open it. SUPRISE !! He used to like craftsman but now that is junk and so on and so on and so on. Best thing I ever got him was a 'saws all'........now THAT was a manly gift. He did alot of projects and remodleing with that TOY. Now if I could jus afford him a backhoe I'd have it made Pam

Ya know, after Jesse came home from work yesterday, he seemed to have gotten off the horse he was riding on.  Even before someone on here told me about maintenance on a tool to keep it good for a long time, I had told Jesse that if he just maintains it, it'll last him.  Also, I told him that for as often as he needs a chainsaw, I just can't see spending $600+ on one.  That's just nuts. :P

Anyhow, I ended up showing him the picture, and he said good things about it.  I told him since he already knows about it, he'll be able to cut down our Christmas tree with it this year. ;;D

I have something to tell EVERYONE, and that is to be as good a RECEIVER this year, as much as a good giver.  Be thankful someone even gives you something! ;)

Happy Holidays to All!!

Melly and all my other lovely sisters here, I have a suggestion for you.
Go out and buy your man the HEAVIEST cast iron frying pan you can find, wrap it up and have it sitting under the tree. If he bitches about so much as ONE of his other presents bring it out with a sweet smile and give it to him.

Bang smack in the pie hole  ;)

Jimmers, Jesse didn't see anything worth shooting.  The deer around here this year just arn't as big as years past.  Probably has to do with the weird weather. :-/  Either way, we still have meat in the freezer from his brother and cousin.  Jess will probably get a doe with the bow too, so we arn't worried. :)

Helen, I refuse to abuse my pans!! LOL  Besides, whatever is in my hand at the moment works quite well!! ;;D

UGH :P

Send the chainsaw back and buy him a damned tie! Let him live with that one.... So much for the "spirit" of giving!!!

Hugs BD

Why does shopping for husbands have to be so hard?

....because it's hard to find one that comes with a decent warranty (not to mention a care and feeding manual). ;;D

Lol... what Ghost said!

Now... what else should I get my wife?  I already picked her up a boatload of stuff, but she selected practically all of it herself.

Something on the net please.  What would you want for $50-$100?  Or more.  Or less.

http://www.basin.com/  I fell in love with this place when I went to the Mall of America a couple weeks ago.  I got the bath bombs and they are WONDERFUL!!!  I would have bought the soaps too, but I was overwhelmed with the amount of different kinds, so I just grabbed a bath bomb barrell instead.

:)

p.s. I also love to get a big, huge bouqet of flowers, a quiet dinner with just my hubby, candles, candles and more candles!!  Oh, and an eBay gift certificate is cool too!
