It sounds like something is missing.  Usually a loop is made when you chain a few stitches and then join them with a slip stitch.

If you want to send me the pattern I will see if I can figure it out.  I am an old, well, long-time crocheter.

Tami

I think it should say chain 5, single crochet in 5th chain loop.

Depending on if you are crocheting in rows, or if you are supposed to be turning it into a circular item.  I would be able to tell more if you gave me the next instruction.

Annette,
I should have remembered you crochet. Tami figured out what it was. The instructions were right it was the nut doing it that was mixed up. I was crocheting on the wrong side so I couldn't find the loop.
What away to met a new person coming on board. At least she knows I am nuts right off.

Thanks Annette
Big hug to you and Dave

Annette Deveny and I are makeing throws. Her's is  called a Dimond Trellis, mine is a Ripple afgan. The Dinond Trellis is what we were haing trouble with.
Mel got me into wannting to crochet again. I use to loe it. I found out tonight I still do. I use to do it at the end of the day , it kind of a craft that calms me. I told Deveny try this and see if it will help you keep the stress away. I got so tickled at her tonight when we were trying to figure it out. She looked at me at one point and said oh this is really stress free LOL. She will see it is once she gets the hang of it.
Have a good night Lady or Good Morning!

I've crocheted most of my life, and I've never been able to go by a pattern. I always look at whatever it is I want to make and copy it. I've made several things that way. One time my grandmother gave me an old small throw type afghan her mother made, with special stitching, which I showed my grandmother how to make (she taught me to crochet). She said her mother was the same way, could only go by looking at something, and not read a pattern.

I used to make doll's dresses, and all kinds of things off the top of my head, but I have great respect for those of you that can read patterns. I don't do nearly as much of it as I used to, but it is very relaxing.
