Title: What Do You Think?
Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Nov 23rd, 2005, 5:21pm
I found this in my email when I got home today.
There was an attachment - no I didn't open it and no, I don't plan to respond.  Just wondered what y'all think this is about?  Thanks - Carol

Good grief, I can barely find this site much less anything else.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one that got this.

Thanks folks and yes Jonny, it's now deleted!

I've gotten over a hundred of these so far in the last two days and they just keep coming.  In the ones I get, the zip file contains an executable file called File-packed_dataInfo.exe.

This file contains the mass mailing worm W32.Sober.X@mm.

You can find information about the worm and a removal tool here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sober.x@mm.html

Never open an attachment from someone you don't know or even from someone you do know without verifying they intentionally sent the attachment.  In cases like with mass mailing worms, the worm bypasses your regular e-mail program and uses its own SMTP server to send copies of itself to everyone in an infected computer's address book.  Because of this, a person may not even realize s/he is infected until someone tells them.  Frequently, the file will look like it came from someone a person knows so the file is opened, the computer is infected and the cycle is continued.

In this day and age it is important to have a virus scanning program installed and frequently updated.  A spyware program, such as adaware is also a good idea.  And most importantly:

Never open an attachment from someone you don't know or even from someone you do know without verifying they intentionally sent the attachment.

That reminds me of the days when I switched to Linux. I was getting virus email attachments just like my wife does. I Started collecting them, but after a few months they stopped coming. How in the heck do the script kiddies know that I am immune to their viruses. Anyway my virus collection was a lost cause and I gave it up.
