Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by unsolved1 on Nov 21st, 2005, 7:21pm It's gone. Say a prayer. UNsolved PS>I doubt system restore will work. If the administrator was properly put to the right person, he would not have been able to do this in the first place. Next time, if they must share a computer, make sure she is the administrator and he has a limited account. |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by vig on Nov 21st, 2005, 7:34pm worse comes to worse, you can take out the hard drive and put it in a second computer as the D: drive and read from there.... all is not lost.... yet are you telling us he refused to log in for you? I'd be reaching for the taser dude's cruisin' for a bruisin'! You do feed, clothe, and shelter him don't you? ;;D |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by Kris_in_SJ on Nov 21st, 2005, 8:05pm I'm no guru - hopefully one will come along soon. First - there are some great disc recovery programs available for free on the web. Just Google it. Second - if that doesn't work, get your puter to a puter expert who can most likely recover the lost files (which, believe it or not are probably still there). Third - ground your teenaged son for the rest of his life, and deny him access to all computers until he can afford to buy one of his own. He can go to the library to do his surfing! Kris |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by Opus on Nov 21st, 2005, 11:44pm Solution, get Koppix (http://www.Knoppix.org/) The 3.9 ISO is on 1 CD. Then if he hasn't set a password on the BIOS ( if he did that can be fixed too), boot into Knoppix and see what you can find. If you find what you want you will need a USB hard drive formated to FAT32. Then you can copy the data to the hard drive. Alternately if you have a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW then you can boot Knoppix to the DVD and burn to CD what you find. If the data was really deleted and you booted windows then it is probably gone. If you had Norton recycle bin they they are probably still there. If you can't do this then you can send the hard drive to a geek you know and they can put it in their box and check it out. Either way do a do a clean install. it may have a root kit on it now, and use the security measures above. Opus/Paul |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by Drk^Angel on Nov 22nd, 2005, 7:35am Did the kid remove the user accounts, or delete the profile directories? Unless the kid was tryin' to be really malicious, I doubt he would've deleted the profile files, but then again, I don't know how psychotic the kid is. If i was the kid, I'd be holdin' the files for ransom. This is the reason why you should set an administrator password in an XP system, and give the users limited accounts. But then again... M$ doesn't want ppl to have too much info about their 'puter, or else they wouldn't be able to blame the users for the piss poor security on Winblows. Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Nov 22nd, 2005, 9:14am Just for the hell of it, log in as administrator and don't use a password. I don't know how many home computers I've seen with no password on the admin account. If you get in as admin, check the recycle bin. If there's nothing there, poke around in windows explorer and see if he made a backup somewhere. If worse comes to worse, give him a piece of paper and a pencil then grab him by the neck and tell him you'll loosen up when he starts writing the password. If you were closer to the Chicago area, I'd tell you to just bring it to me and let me have a go at it. I have some other... ummm.... tools???... for fixing 'forgotten' passwords. |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by mynm156 on Nov 22nd, 2005, 12:05pm Well he put the guest profile back on. He has set it so he is the admin. As long as My X can get to her school stuff I am cool with it. |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by Rock_Lobster on Nov 22nd, 2005, 2:49pm She needs to copy all of her files now. Copy them to a USB drive or burn them to a CD or the like. Then wipe the system clean... put in the XP disk and start from scratch. Set yourself up as administrator. Set up an weak account for him... call it 'littlefaggot' or something like that. Install 'NetNanny' under his account so that he cannot get to his wanking sites. |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by Drk^Angel on Nov 23rd, 2005, 10:01am Wait... I've got a question... Okay... Obviously y'all set up your XP system for multiple users... So you prolly get a list of users that pop up when you boot the system... I would imagine that right now, it lists the little faggot's account and guest... Right? Okay... And when you boot in safe mode, it lists Administrator, littlefaggot, and guest... Right? Click on Administrator... Does it show a password box, or does it log into Administrator without a password? Preinstalled, OEM XP systems normally will not have an Administrator password set unless someone specifically sets one (M$ is so brilliant... Gotta love that top notch security). BTW... If you can get into the Administrator account... I would suggest setting a password, recreating your accounts, grabbing the backup of your files from his desktop folder, delete his account, and make sure there is no accounts on the system which he knows the password for. Hell... While you're at it... Set a BIOS boot password just to really fuck with him. PFDAN.................................... Drk^Angel |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by fubar on Nov 23rd, 2005, 1:59pm Hmmm... My ex is batshit crazy and cannot control our kids at all either... HOWEVER, they do listen to me when I tell them not to fuck with their mom. Just because the kid is 'there' doesn't mean he is allowed to be a shit. I'd crack his skull for being a little shit and would not allow him to behave like this in the future. I'm an ogre though. |

Title: Re: Hey Computer geeks/GODS Post by vig on Nov 23rd, 2005, 2:34pm I think the idea is that he should never do that to anybody. not just you, not just mom, whomever. |
