Washing Clothes Recipe

(Given a Young Bride By Her Grandmother)
Never thought of a washer in this light before. what a blessing!
'Washing Clothes Recipe' - imagine having a recipe for this!
Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe: This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook - with spelling errors and all.

Washing Clothes
Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.

Sort things, make 3 piles
1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.

To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down
with boiling water.

Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil,
then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.

Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.

Hang old rags on fence.

Spread tea towels on grass.

Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water.

Turn tubs upside down.

Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

============================================

Paste this over your washer and dryer. Next time when you think things are bleak, read it again, kiss that washing machine and dryer, and give thanks. First thing each morning you should run and hug your washer and dryer, also your toilet - those two-holers used to get mighty cold!

(For you non-southerners... wrench means rinse. )

Happy Monday ya'll   BD

This is SOOOOO going over our washer/dryer for when the kids are griping about having to FOLD the clothes when they come out of the dryer!

We keep asking them-  you think you have it hard???

Nothing beats rain water for washing ANYTHING...unless you live in a region with acid rain. ;;D http://tinypic.com/fxtlwg.gif

Hell, I kissed my washer and dryer goodbye before I left the house this morning and told them I'd be back soon.

The bad part is -- I'm old enough to remember clothes lines and NOT having dryers (we had a washing machine, but no dryer). After my son was born, Bill finally bought me a dryer one rainy day when we ran out of diapers and cuptowels and about everything else dry in the house. Had that thing over 30 years - only had to replace a few belts on it... don't make 'em like that any more....

There are a few things about the "good old days" that are better left in the past...... ;)

Hugs BD

Thanks Barbara. I'm printing your post now.

Maybe for Christmas a dryer would be just the thing for

the downstairs maid.

We went a few years without a dryer too.
If you want to get techincal; mom used a ringer washer until I was about 10. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/Mondeiu Smiley.gif

She still liked to hang stuff on the line though. Sheets smelled good.

Naturally she beat her clothing on rocks near the mud hut when she was a girl. http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/mix/neanderthal.gif?SSImageQuality

And of course, 'near' meant 5 miles, in the dead of winter, up hill, both ways.

Wouldn't dare sit on my washer.  The weight of my backside would probably bring it to a grinding halt  ;;D ;;D  Will have to just keep kissing it and telling it how wonderful it is and try and get the thrills elsewhere [smiley=laugh.gif]
