Title: Re: O Hail Knowledgeble Tecchies.... Post by Drk^Angel on Nov 18th, 2005, 12:50pm Well... Ya feel like shoppin' on Black Friday? The rumor mill (aka gottadeal.com) says that Wal-Mart will have a $400 HP laptop or HP desktop and Best Buy will have a $150 desktop. Haven't looked too much into any of 'em myself, but some time this next week the real ads should be arrivin' at ppls homes. PFDAN.......................................... Drk^Angel |

Title: Re: O Hail Knowledgeble Tecchies.... Post by Peppermint on Nov 18th, 2005, 4:29pm The PC crashs... (get frozen) and is verrrrrry slow. This one has Windows 98 (and NO I don't want Linux ;;D) The other one has/had Windows 2000. Bill said it might just be the mother board (I think that's what he said). ... cuz first it had a blue screen, that said something about re-installing windows... (ohh brother), and then when I followed directions to change some setting I got the Black screen with a blinking cursor. Nothing else. And that's the end of that. OY!!! |

Title: Re: O Hail Knowledgeble Tecchies.... Post by Opus on Nov 19th, 2005, 12:23am Do a clean installation of windows, it should be done yearly anyway. I have no idea if Linux every gets corrupted like windows because every 6 months I install a brand new up to date system, why not it is free. Pep, I promise not to send you a Knoppix disk, which is great for testing whether it is a hardware problem or not, nor a install disc that will make you old computer seem to run twice as fast. Be careful with those cheap deals. Read the fine print. Sometimes they have Windows installed but only for the first 60 days. Then it disappears. You have to go buy a disc to install it again, about $250. |

I'm so glad you said hello and how are you. Hope you, Wes and the babes are doing well. If/when you do come back to NY, visiting is a MUST!! Pep |

Title: Re: O Hail Knowledgeble Tecchies.... Post by marty on Nov 21st, 2005, 6:13am Peppermint Could be the hard drive but, as Paul said, re-install Windows first - it may be software. If the hard drive won't take the install, more than likely the hard drive is what need to be replaced. I hope that you have backed up your important docs etc. Even if you have not backed it up, there are still ways to retrieve it. BobG Even if it is a time limited operating system installed, you can always get Windows OS cheap - check E-Bay. Even the XP Home sells for around $80.00 at WalMart (did last year anyway)., Drk Windows disappear and re-appear on a regular basis - it is part of the software;;D Marty |

Title: Re: O Hail Knowledgeble Tecchies.... Post by Drk^Angel on Nov 21st, 2005, 6:56am Just because it stops responding don't mean it disappears :P I think I'll just stick with building computers that aren't infested with Windows. That way I don't have to worry about waitin' for it to disappear. PFDAN....................................... Drk^Angel |

Title: Re: O Hail Knowledgeble Tecchies.... Post by TomM on Nov 21st, 2005, 6:53pm Hey Peppy! Sorry for the cyptic message. An XP disk will format the hard dive and load windows [sort of at the same time]. If you don't have a disk...geez...I'm lost. I can't throw you a copy considering the law firm I work for is IP [intelectual property--patent, trademark, copyrights]. What about where you work now? Or, are you seld employed? Maybe fellow CHer will throw a copy your way... TomM |
