Title: computer
Post by maffumatt on Oct 30th, 2005, 5:57pm
So my computer crashed and I had to reformat my drives. When I installed my backup it read as currupt. Anyway I can't get my network to work. In my device manager my sm bus controller isn't being read. My pc is a Dell 4550 with windows home on it. Well I am stuck with dialup untill I get this figured out. I tried the dell site but cant find the driver. Any ideas?

Since your dial-up is working, go on Dell's website. They have all the drivers for your model ready for download.

Modified: I did not read your post completely - send them an e-mail and have them direct you.

But you got it for a good price, right???

If your motherboard is an Intel board, download the Intel bus drivers from the Intel site.  If it is a VIA chipset board, download the 4-in-1 drivers from Via.

If you can't find them, give me your email addy and I'll email them to you.

Dell restore disk that came with the computer?

Dell should have the drivers on their website.  It would be listed as a chipset driver.

Here is the link to all the drivers for your system:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_4550&os=WW1&osl=EN#

This is the link to the Chipset Drivers:

http://tinyurl.com/cs6fk

If all else fails, you could crack the case and look at the chipset, then go to the manufacturer's website for updated drivers.

Let me know if this doesn't do it.

Edited to use www.tinyurl.com to make a manageable length url.

I know this won't help right now but for the next time,

Get Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/).
I would try the older 3.9 version (http://archive.cs.stedwards.edu/knoppix/) first as it is on one CD. Try it on your computer and if that doesn't work then you will need a newer version.

Then if windows crashes, or you need drivers just boot to Knoppix, in system you will find hardware and then you can see a list of your hardware, who made it and what the model numbers are then go online and get the drivers.

*update* I forgot that becouse Microsoft will not release the specs for NTFS, Linux cannot write to it. So if you have two drives maybe you can burn the drivers to a CD, or write to any drive or partition with FAT32 formatting.

Heh. Yeah. I got a SM Bus prob too, on the kids toaster. The MB is rice flavored, so support is hard to decipher w/o wasabi or KimChee.
Am searching for the proper INF.exe file to make the correction, that doesn't have the Die You Gravy Sucking Pig virus enclosed. Let me know if you find an answer.

I've got nothing but time
