Title: Kids & Meds Help Please
Post by ShariRae on Oct 29th, 2005, 8:50am
Yesterday..after waiting months in agony..my 15 yr old daughter was diagnosed with "Non Specific Trigger Migraines". As with all of us & our cluster diagnosis..I was just thrilled it wasnt a brain tumor or something.Anway the neuro put her on Topamax to prevent & Relpax to treat. But as we were leaving he says "Just keep in mind these meds are not approved for use in people under18".I have never been on Topamax..or Relpax...can anyone tell me what to watch for in her..all the doc said was to read the insert...well holy crap..if we all did that with our meds..we wouldnt take em!
As we were leaving he says "Does mom need any Imitrex for her next cycle?" Cool..he isnt even my doc!! He said just stop by & he will give me pills, inhaler or shots..whichever I want! Yayyyy Doc.
Any help would be appreciated as she was just so glad to get something to help her that I dont know if she would tell me if she didnt feel right if the headaches were starting to subside.
Thank You
Huggs
Shari

I have no idea about the Topomax or Relpax, but very cool about the doc giving the Imitrex to ya. :)

Hi Shari, my 4 year old has CH and he is seen by Professor Goadsby who has already said if he needs to use prevents he will give him topiramate (Topomax) as it has a long history of being used for kids. Your daughter may be his first patient to treat with it but he has alot of data to back him up on its safety and effectiveness for kids.
We have a 16 year old suffer on the UK Boards who is using imitrex injections. Relpax is another triptan and obviously the one he thinks most suitable for what your daughter has been diagnosed with. There is evidence yet again to back up triptans in youngsters so don't worry. PG was even talking about 1mg doses of imi for Jasper so it must be safe.
However as with any triptan there ARE risks so do be careful and make sure you never exceed the stated dose
Hope this helps a bit
love

Thank You...he has her ramping up the dose a week at a time..she hates the thought of being "medicated" as she is very active in school sports & is afraid this somehow will slow her down...but let me tell ya..these headaches were doin a damn good job of that!

Topomax made me as dim as a 2 watt bulb! They certainly slowed me down but there are alot of people here who have had great success with it so persevere and see how she goes!
Wishing you luck, I hope she gets some PF time very soon

Helen

I'm sorry Shari. I think it sucks when kids have these HA disorders.  :-/
I remember reading about a school age kid on topamax here who began having a lot of difficulty with his schoolwork. I know it has a "dumbing" effect on adults, I imagine it does the same to kids.
Let me say that some migraine sufferers that I know have had good results with kudzu. It has a gentle BP lowering effect and it seems pretty safe. Have you seen the threads on it? It may be worth a look.
You'll find most of them linked in this thread:

Good luck and PF wishes to your home, nani

Topomax may make her frustrated because of the side effects Helen mentioned but also like she said not all people respond the same.

Good luck to her but YOU hang in there!

my son get ch and migraines.  All the dr would give him until he was 18 was midrin/duradrin.  Imitrix isn't approved for use in kids under 18 no testing has been done on them so I was told.  Topamax can cause kidney stones so makes sure she drinks lots of water.  However I was on it and had no problems but know of some people who did.

Every drug company is terrified of lawsuits so the warning literature can be pretty scary. MDs are even more frightened. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/CRINGE SMILEY.gif

As far as Topamax is concerned; like Helen, it made me kinda slow and forgetful. I took it for my epilepsy and it worked. I can't take the stuff now though. I had a big dose and it made me nervous. Damn. Pretty good drug though.

Not everyone will have trouble with it. Give it a shot.

All i would say here is that you should be really careful here.
A close follow up with the doc here if she was my daughter
