WEATHER BULLETIN (I like the Dakota attitude in this one)

Here in the Northern Plains we just recovered from an historic, may I
even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" with a terrible
blizzard that dumped up to 24" inches of snow with 50 mph winds that
created a white-out beyond huricane proportions, that broke trees in
half, stranded hundreds of motorist in near-lethal snowbanks,  closed
all roads, isolated scores of communities, and cut power to tens of
thousands of people.

George Bush did not come . . . FEMA staged nothing . . . no one howled
for the government . . . no one even uttered an expletive on TV.
Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards . . . no one asked for a FEMA trailer
home . . .no national news anchors moved in.

We just melted snow for water, closed Interstate 94, sent out caravans
to pluck people out of snow-engulfed cars, fired up wood stoves, broke
out oil lanterns or camp lamps, and put on an extra layer of clothes.

Even though a "Category 5" blizzard of this scale has never before
overtaken the region this early in the "blizzard season," we know  it
can happen, we know how to deal with it ourselves, and we didn't even
give the blizzard a name.

Everyone in North Dakota is fine.

I really thought this one was interesting..... Leave it to them northerns to "handle" the situation. Maybe that's why the North won the damn war....... >:(

thanks Barb,

us southerners know how to "take care" of ourselves too.......just the media fails to always report of the good things you know.

After Katrina, the shelters here that opened and housed and fed evacuees were run by LOCAL organizations with the aide of businesses and civic organizations. By the time relief efforts "got" here, things were already under way.

Think it's time we all learned to take care of our own in some way. It's just sometimes, we need a little more help.

Kudos for the ppl in North Dakota as well!!!!!

thanks for the story,

hugs,
EDNA

Good post, Barb. :)

You know, we back in Finland smile when some other countries panic about snow. This country would be closed few months every year if we would, too! ;;D

Would any of us survive a real blizzard?

The last real blizzard that happened where I live was in 1967. It dumped 6 feet of snow. My parents were snowed in for 4 days with no power. groups of people with snowmobiles went around digging people out of their houses and later dropping off food.

I could stay at my mothers because she has wood heat but living with two complaining people for 4 days would drive me mad. Having no running water is also hard. In the old days her house was spring fed.

North from me, a few years ago they had a bigger storm. They are used to a lot of snow but I think they had 12 feet in a few days. It was something to see kids sliding down roofs for fun, the snow was at the roof line of most houses.
