I've been learning to drive and it scares me... :-/ Actually, it took me years before I had the courage to even enter driving school. I read too often front page stories about car accidents... :'( I'm scared to death that one day I don't see something important and end up killing someone! :o
I'm panicking before lessons and I always want to cancel them. I know I need to learn how to drive, but I can't stop panicking!Help!

Sandie, I've taught many people to drive. First lesson takes about an hour and we don't even turn the engine on. It's simply a time to learn, softly and quietly, what all the bits of the car actually do and why they are there.

Lesson two takes another hour and we don't go anywhere near the car. We simply watch the traffic and discuss the reasons for road rules and why, properly used, they work so efficiently.

Once you understand these two very basic principles, and the reasons for them, learning can actually become a pleasant experience. You'll also end up a more competent driver.

You're actually way ahead of the situation. Most people are only concerned about themselves ... whereas you are concerened about others. How refreshing!
I'd be happy to share lanes on the road with you!
Try not to look at it as panic, but more as a deep concern for other drivers and you will be a compliment to our streets ;)
Brian makes some good points, no reason to rush.
I'll bet most everyone would wish that more people thought like you in desiring road skills and consideration over those who could care less.
Take your time and when you're ready, you'll be a welcome driver on the roads. :)

it's ok to be scared!! Just take a deep breath, & you'll do just fine!! I think you will enjoy it!! & I know you will be a safe driver!!

I wish my driving lessons would have started like that! But nope, streight to the driver's seat and action... ::)
I wish that part of the teaching would be to go through all the parts of the car before even trying to drive. But no. They trust that each student learns it from the book and that's enough... ::)

But guys, thank you for giving me confidence. I have a lesson coming up in few hours time and feel better about it. :)

Small story for you dear friend.

Newly Widowed at the age of 37 with six children ranging in age from 1 year to 17 years old, a very strong and determined woman decided to take the family car out to the back 4 acres and teach herself to drive for the first time in her life, using trees and stumps to learn the finer points of cornering and parallell parking. She had no choice in the matter, she had children she had to care for. After three weeks of daily practice she passed her exam on the first attempt.

That woman was my Mother. You'll be just fine dear.

Drive it like you stole it. That's what I do, I have the driving records to prove it, I have all kinds of driving awards from the police. :-/

You'll do just fine, Sanna. You're a clusterhead, you can do anything you set your mind to. The more you practice, the more comfortable you'll be. Like Dave, I appreciate sharing the road with folks who care about the others on it.

You go girl! Took me till I was 34 to get up the nerve to learn to drive! I was not only scared, I was TERRIFIED! But that was a good thing in disguise- made me a safer driver cuz I was so careful not to do anything stupid so no one got hurt.

You'll do great Sandi! Be patient with yourself, take your time, and you'll do great :)

And that's how I learned to drive. :P j/k I learned by drivin' a junker through a peach orchard at 45 m.p.h. everyday, twice a day for two weeks to get firewood for the winter when I was 14. My dad would've prolly had a heart attack with some of the close calls I had if he'd of seen me... LOL

You'll do fine... Just remember to keep your eyes on the road, you mind on what you're doin', and your hand in your pants... Uh... I mean on the wheel.

But I must say: I hate the cyclists in this city. They're everywhere! And they have no respect for others... :(

Hey Sandy after the big fat one you spin up, you wont have to drive, you can float home. LOL After driving for awhile you will be aiming for the cyclist, and saying to your friend riding with you "Hold my beer and watch this".

Um....I can relate to how you feel......but take it from me.....the earlier to learn the better cuz I didn't start driveing till I was 40 and taught myself on a medium sized car we'd bought. I am the first to admit I am NOT an avid driver cuz of it. Got t-boned when in high school and my mom was driveing.....I was in 11th grade and had been out with my dad a few times practiceing and signed up for drivers ed but vacation made me cancel. So after the wreck bein hit by a guy that didn't even slow down and hit us for insurence puprposes and WON I was afraid to drive and never got the desire. I wanted to but no one after that had time and I NEEDED alot of time and confidence built up esp when the OTHER guy hits you on purpose. Remember one thing......drive as if everyone is out to get you......NEVER anticipate when a 4 way stop is comeing up the others will stop or stay stopped. And anytime there is an interesection even tho you have the rite away and THEY have to stop......NEVER be too sure they will. Brad didn't have the patience to teach me to drive......my parents both worked long hours and didn't really have the time. So I SLIPPED thru the cracks. Was very rough when I had a baby not to be able to get away and do anything but stay in that house. I didn't want the same thing to happen to my daughter too and needed her to get out and do stuff and work. She took drivers ed and we kind of taught each other....but she scared the crap out of me how she drove. Pulled out in front of people all the time tellin me to CHILL cuz 'hey....they didn't hit us did they' !! Huh ? I'm glad I got my lisence so I can get out and do stuff and run errands and take care of myself a bit more but I do NOT drive that much or that far and am paranoid on highways. School made us watch a movie 'Blood on the Pavement' which flipped me out and haunts me still to this day which didn't help esp gettin into a wreck with my mom so early. So get your lisence now....and build up some confidence.....but always be a cautious and careful driver Pam

Just be glad you don't have to learn while double clutching ;;D

But if you can also learn to drive a standard shift. There is nothing like having full control of a vehicle.

I don't have a car of my own and mum has our family car back in Helsinki (which is 300 km away from where I'm learning to drive). There's a one good thing coming out of being tiny: I always get to drive my fave car, pink Honda Jazz. I don't particularly like the color, but I can handle this one way better than the 2 other cars the school has.

thank you for your posts. I feel much better. :)

I know I NEED to learn how to drive properly. For instance, I can't go to our summer cottage without a car.

I am little less scared after driving in a horrible weather yesterday. At least I won't be scared of driving during the winter months! The teacher, a woman in her 40s, was very supportive. Just the kind of teacher I wish I had in the beginning!

Still, I have no intentions of telling my pals about it until I have my licence. Only three of them can drive, though.

Oh, I know. Don't worry. ;)

But I must admit that from all the people who have taken me from place A to B by car, the best drivers have actually been women. Including my mother and a friend of mine who both drive very well. Dad always wanted to "teach" others how to drive and cops stopped him once for that. ::) And my male cousins always think they've F1 drivers or something.

I know that not all women are great drivers, but I have the provilege to know some who are. :)

You'll be fine. Trust me, when I first learned how to drive, well - that first day in my brother's old Duster, I killed alot of vegetation. [smiley=laugh.gif]
Within another two weeks you'll be a regular road warrior.
