Title: Can I get off now? Post by Opus on Oct 25th, 2005, 7:44pm The world that is, what a night. I knew the storm was coming, so I made sure the plow tractor was running, it wasn't. I thought I fixed it but the battery terminals went bad, so I fixed then too. It cranked great but wouldn't star, then the battery died, so I put the charger on and the power went off. By then I had 6" of heavy wet snow, and because most of the trees still have there leaves, they were breaking like crazy. The apple trees still full of apples were the hardest hit, despite being shaken off twice they still broke. So I changed the oil in the generator because I couldn't pull it with the summer oil in it. I then decided to drag the generator over, but it wouldn't start. I found it had no spark, and the oil sensor was to blame, so unhooking the wire and taping it off got me spark. Then it still wouldn't start, not getting has, I figured the float was stuck so dropping it a couple of times to free it and I was good to go. So we dragged the generator through the deep snow, and hooked it up. Someone needed to get through so I grabbed the chain saw and cut the tree. I checked to make sure nothing was ready to come down before starting. On my second cut a tree fell from deeper in the woods and the top hit me in the shoulder. The guy I was helping was hit in the head. So now I have a hurt shoulder, it works but it only doesn't hurt unless I put it in a sling. I have heat, but only until the generator runs out. I was not able to fill it all the way up. So I will be back out there soon. I am just wondering what else can go wrong. Opus/Paul |

Title: Re: Can I get off now? Post by cootie on Oct 25th, 2005, 8:07pm Oh good grief you have had your FILL of crap......I am so sorry all that had to happen and you got hurt. Probly slamed yer shoulder out of place when hit and everything sort of stretched out and acheing big time !! I had mine yanked out of socket and it goes out all the time now.....(more horror horse wreck stuff).....hope it heals up fast and you can get stuff back to normal and STAY normal (yeah again....I know.....and what is normal......well at least pleasant lets say !). I can't beleive you had SNOW.......never head nothin bout that yet.......I am sick of winter so far and we haven't had any yet !!! Am tired of the gloom and doom look outside and not bein able to be outside and windows open and the outside summer sounds and warmth. Hopein your still stayin warm too. Gettin thru it vibes to ya Pam How do you hook up your generator ?? Is it TRUE you just plug them into a socket and they 'back' generate electricity to things left of ? Brad wired ours when that bad storm hit last winter and ran wires from it direct to the box and we had wires strung thru the house all over the place. I thought it was kind of SCAREY !!! Kept the furnace fridge and water pump goin and the small satillite tv also. But that took hours to do and run wires thru windows. Brad said that was the hard way. Just curious how everyone else does it......apparently plugging it in is the EASY way ??? I am scared of electric stuff !!!!!!! |

No! Brad's plan is one of the ways to go. I have one circuit that is used for emergency purposes. Powers the refridg, and furnace. You would need a 400 AMP Cat Generator connected by a shunt relay to the main feed to support an entire household. |

Title: Re: Can I get off now? Post by Opus on Oct 26th, 2005, 10:14pm Well, the power is back on, I got 1 tractor going and plowed some, but it was hard on the shoulder. Most of the trees bounced back up, but even more broke before the snow melted some. Cootie, I have a trailer which means I have a pole outside , with a panel on it. I installed an outdoor 30amp 250v receptacle on it and wired it in. I made 30 amp cord with a male cord cap on both ends ( this is illegal). When the power goes off, I turn off the main breaker, plug in the generator and turn on the receptacle breaker ( also illegal). This way I can run the whole sub-panel off the generator. I have a 5000W, and I can run the furnace, freezer, refrigerator, and all the lights and receptacles at the same time. If I want to run the microwave I wait until the furnace is off. There is a device, that plugs into the generator, and lets you switch circuits over to it, with a gauge telling you you are OK, but there is no place for me to put that, and it is about $400. The best way is with a larger permanent generator running on propane, with an automatic transfer switch but that is big bucks. on 10/25/05 at 22:38:22, kimmiedawn81 wrote:
Kimmie, Where I live is pretty safe, no volcanoes, no large earthquakes, Hurricanes rarely make it here at strength, no chance of ever flooding, The dangers are, Forest fire, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, blizzards. In my opinion it is a safe place to live, but even the Indians didn't live here, only us crazy white men. Opus/Paul |

400 amp!, you must live where there is cheap electricity. If I wanted to run everything, I would need a 10,000 watt generator, which puts out 60 amps 240v. It would be great to live in one of those $.04/Kwh areas, they even heat with electricity. Here it is $.13/Kwh. Opus/Paul |

Title: Re: Can I get off now? Post by cootie on Oct 26th, 2005, 11:20pm I forgot what amp or watt or whatever our generator is but it's not a BIG one. All we want out of it is to run the furnace and fridge and also the water pump which only comes on when your run water of course. But I'm not so sure we could plug this one in to backflow power to run whatever is ON.......so I suppose he should set up a breaker to just run what we want and turn the rest off and plug it in ? I'm not sold on that idea and I don't want to see ANYMORE SPARKS and EXPLOSIONS after that last power line burned thru with a tree laying on two lines. I am scrart to freakin SHIT of that stuff. Anyhow.......it took him hours to rewire it thru windows ect when we had that last bad winter storm and we had wires everywhere. Not cool but....it worked !!! Our generator will run a LONG time fuel'd up tho which is a plus. But the power co sent out warnings cuz people are electrocuteing the guys when they go to work on the lines and power is running back thru them ?? Woudln't that cause a down'd line that shut off to respark and burn ? I am beginning to think I don't know anything and am afraid of what I do know Pam |
