Title: Re: Does anyone know a good ancestry site? Post by echo on Oct 21st, 2005, 2:37pm I used one a long time ago that informed me that my oldest son was actually my middle brothers father, and that my oldest brother was my son. Additionally I found out that I had a sister - still irritates me that she has yet to show her face or send me a card for my birthday -- what a self absorbed B she is. |

Title: Re: Does anyone know a good ancestry site? Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Oct 21st, 2005, 2:53pm The Mormons to keep a lot of very detailed records but I have been warned that the accuracy of their stuff isn't really the best. Ancestry.com is the place I have been using. Check out your local Library to. They almost always have a lot of local geneology stuff and can get other stuff through other Libraries. Ours also has a full membership at ancestry.com so you can get to all of the not-free stuff too. |

Title: Re: Does anyone know a good ancestry site? Post by Leesa on Oct 21st, 2005, 6:19pm Mel, alot of the info Ive gotten has come from the Morman's. Yea I know hard to believe but true. Through my cousin whom is working on the my family also she has been able to get ALOT of info by using her local library just by using her card. I have marriage and death cirts. that she has found. Ancetry and Geneology are good sights and NO you dont have pay to get info either. If your family is from WI or any other state, you may find on those sights message boards that you can post to get info from. Thats where alot of my info has come from too. If you need anything let me know Ill be happy to help out where I can. Good luck!! Leesa ;;D |

Title: Re: Does anyone know a good ancestry site? Post by floridian on Oct 22nd, 2005, 12:26pm My mom does family research and she occasionally goes to the LDS/Mormon center for this - each region has a designated center with computers that tie into the LDS databank, and there are people there to help. Other sources - she has gone to the Gettysburg library, and while dad and the kids were out viewing the battlefield, she was looking things up. County museums or historical societies are also very useful - if you can send them a list of relatives, dates and locations, they can often provide information. The Library of Congress has a lot of resources they are starting to put on line - mom was reading Washington's letters to some other guy in Virginia and found info that led her to other information, that led to other information. Its like a treasure hunt!! |
