Title: Speak the language Post by kimmeesue on Oct 9th, 2005, 12:56am On the way home tonight we came upon a terrible car wreck. We live in the middle of Kansas which surprisingly, has a relatively large hispanic population. The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was badly trapped and fortunatley the first people on the scene were trained as first resonders. Unfortunately the man spoke not a word of English. And even though two of the people at the scene are half Mexican they speak no Spanish. It was a difficult situation as he was obviously in great pain but couldn't communicate where. This is fairly common in this area and I don't get it. Why would anyone choose to live somewhere and not make an effort to learn enough to communiate in an emergency. I'm not talking fluency, here, just enough to maybe save your own life. Just something on my mind as I sit here fighting the beast. Kim |

Title: Re: Speak the language Post by Woobie on Oct 9th, 2005, 7:58am What cracks me up is when I'm dealing to people who dont speak English - either Polish, Greek, Asian, or Mexican.......... you try to tell them - for instance, that they cannot have their cell phones on the table. They say "NO ENGLISH". and you have to stop the game and use your hands to tell them - and make an ass out of yourself. Or maybe I have to tell them that they cannot split a 5 and an 8 (cuz they'll try anything)... they act stupid and think they can take shots. BUT - make a mistake and take their money, and all the sudden - they can recount the last 1/2 hour with the floorperson in English. AMaZinG! |

Imagine there's no countries, It isnt hard to do, ... But it isn't the hip dream coming true - it is economics reshaping the world. Simple fact is that the people in power have agreed that we 'need' cheep labor, and that makes the mold. So they set wages below the rate that would attract a local, but which are well above the wages in Central America. And they hire whoever applies (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). When those jobs are waiting, there is a journey to be made. Business hates borders and pulls the illegals in. Their government won't enforce immigration laws. And the scapegoat is anyone who has compassion and tries to make the lives of the illegals any better ... You think that if we cut them off from schooling their kids here or visiting emergency rooms or getting food from the local food banks they will decide to leave?? No. This problem will not be solved until the real causes are addressed, and the real causes aren't the laws in Wisconsin that make it easier to get a bank account regardless of your visa/work permit status. Title: Re: Speak the language Post by sandie99 on Oct 9th, 2005, 11:23am Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. That means that every Finn can speak both. There has been a lot of discussion over the years, though. Lots of people hate that the government forces them to learn Swedish but as things are now, everyone has to. Swedish was my first foreign language. I started to study it when I was 9. English came into the picture when I was 11. I've studied also German, Spanish and Italian. :) Sanna |

Title: Re: Speak the language Post by rextangle on Oct 9th, 2005, 3:16pm When I came to the US in 1985, I didn't speak a word of english... but I never expected anyone to speak french to me. So I worked my ass off to learn as much as possible and as quick as possible by watching TV, read the papers, etc... Luckily I've always had an easy time learning new languages. But I'm not surprised that spanish speaking folks don't learn! All the signs are in english and spanish, bus routes, customer service, manuals, etc... if you make it easy for them, why should they bother? But Kim, as far as your story goes, who knows? Maybe the guy is new in the States? Maybe just visiting? Every case is different... But if indeed he's been living here for years without bothering to learn the language, that's his loss... My 2 cents, Rex |

Looks like you call liberals asswipes though. The one thing liberals need to do is to stop being liberal when dealing with the conservative talkshow screechers and the Republican noise machine. We have to pretend there is no middle ground. They do. If you live here, you need English. It's no mystery why financial institutions are happy to be bi-lingual. Money. English-only speaking Americans are increasingly at a disadvantage too. We are pretty obnoxious about not requiring language studies; like they did when I was in school. I can't say Latin did me much good. Girls always took French. Guys Spanish or German. Leave it to a goof like me to forget all the Latin I ever learned. What waste. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/sigh.gif Charlie |

Title: Re: Speak the language Post by rextangle on Oct 9th, 2005, 3:33pm Charlie, As much as I hated the numerous years of latin and ancient greek I took, I finally find it useful when running into a word I don't know. The roots of a lot of words, or languages for that matter, derive from these 2. But trust me, when I was a teen, this crap made me crazy, and I hated it with a passion... Why???? Because nobody spoke these freakin languages! ;;D |
