Title: Speak the language
Post by kimmeesue on Oct 9th, 2005, 12:56am
On the way home tonight we came upon a terrible car wreck.  We live in the middle of Kansas which surprisingly, has a relatively large hispanic population.  The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was badly trapped and fortunatley the first people on the scene were trained as first resonders.  Unfortunately the man spoke not a word of English.  And even though two of the people at the scene are half Mexican they speak no Spanish.  It was a difficult situation as he was obviously in great pain but couldn't communicate where.
This is fairly common in this area and I don't get it.  Why would anyone choose to live somewhere and not make an effort to learn enough to communiate in an emergency.  I'm not talking fluency, here, just enough to maybe save your own life.
Just something on my mind as I sit here fighting the beast.

Kim

Given our tourism industry we see many people here who can't speak English.  They come from Japan, China, all through Europe, America.

Can be a problem during emergencies.

What cracks me up is when I'm dealing to people who dont speak English - either Polish, Greek, Asian, or Mexican.......... you try to tell them - for instance, that they cannot have their cell phones on the table.    They say "NO ENGLISH".  and you have to stop the game and use your hands to tell them - and make an ass out of yourself.   Or maybe I have to tell them that they cannot split a 5 and an 8 (cuz they'll try anything)... they act stupid and think they can take shots.

BUT - make a mistake and take their money, and all the sudden - they can recount the last 1/2 hour with the floorperson in English.

AMaZinG!

My spanish is about as good as my english but loosely translated "Get me to the hospital and give me lots (portions) of morphine injections.

Probably should be "Llevame a un hospital...."

So...these illegal aliens who (indiviually) owe 10's of thousands of dollars in unpaid medical bills, and because they have no SS#'S these bills are unreported on credit records, and they can get governmental assistance to buy a home and I can't?  I never heard of this legislation Jonny, thank you for bringing this to light.

"According to Michael Frias, a spokesman for the FDIC, “Banks aren’t legally required to verify legal status. There is no federal law which requires banks to verify the immigration status of foreign account holders.”

The only problem with that statement is that illegal aliens are not merely “foreign account holders”, but are illegal inhabitants of the U.S., courtesy of our banking industry, which is inviolate of the laws of the U.S. Constitution"

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
...

But it isn't the hip dream coming true - it is economics reshaping the world. Simple fact is that the people in power have agreed that we 'need' cheep labor, and that makes the mold.

So they set wages below the rate that would attract a local, but which are well above the wages in Central America. And they hire whoever applies (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).   When those jobs are waiting, there is a journey to be made.

Business hates borders and pulls the illegals in.  Their government won't enforce immigration laws. And the scapegoat is anyone who has compassion and tries to make the lives of the illegals any better ...  You think that if we cut them off from schooling their kids here or visiting emergency rooms or getting food from the local food banks they will decide to leave??  No.

This problem will not be solved until the real causes are addressed, and the real causes aren't the laws in Wisconsin that make it easier to get a bank account regardless of your visa/work permit status.

For some comedic relief, try "Your in America - Speak Spanish" by Paul Rodriguez:

jonny,

I live in Wi. and believe me when I say that we have some of the most bleeding heart liberal asswipes running this state. Shit like this makes me look forward to the day when I retire and can leave for good.

Out taxes have fucking skyrocketed and the services have gone down. High teen pregnancy (We won't blame the parent/s) High drop-out rates (We'll blame the teachers) Record murder rate (We'll blame that on the guns) High unemployment (We'll blame that on the alarm clock)

Yep,

If you were born and raised here, you get to work your ass off and not get jack-shit or:

Come in illegally, fart out more kids than you can afford, sit on your lazy ass and Wi. will through money and homes at you. (At taxpayer expense) >:(

Jimmers - Good luck finding your conservative paradise.  In terms of teen pregnancy, the top 10 states are (ranked from worst to least worst):

Mississippi, Texas, Arizona, Arkansas, New Mexico, Georgia, Louisiana, Nevada, Alabama, Oklahoma

And look at divorce rates, crime rates, poverty rates, illiteracy rates, or any other indicator.  You'll find that the conservative states are guarding the worst end of the list.

Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. That means that every Finn can speak both. There has been a lot of discussion over the years, though. Lots of people hate that the government forces them to learn Swedish but as things are now, everyone has to.

Swedish was my first foreign language. I started to study it when I was 9. English came into the picture when I was 11. I've studied also German, Spanish and Italian. :)

When I came to the US in 1985, I didn't speak a word of english... but I never expected anyone to speak french to me.  So I worked my ass off to learn as much as possible and as quick as possible by watching TV, read the papers, etc...
Luckily I've always had an easy time learning new languages.

But I'm not surprised that spanish speaking folks don't learn!
All the signs are in english and spanish, bus routes, customer service, manuals, etc... if you make it easy for them, why should they bother?

But Kim, as far as your story goes, who knows?
Maybe the guy is new in the States? Maybe just visiting?
Every case is different...

But if indeed he's been living here for years without bothering to learn the language, that's his loss...

My 2 cents,
Rex

Looks like you call liberals asswipes though.

The one thing liberals need to do is to stop being liberal when dealing with the conservative talkshow screechers and the Republican noise machine. We have to pretend there is no middle ground. They do.

If you live here, you need English. It's no mystery why financial institutions are happy to be bi-lingual. Money.

English-only speaking Americans are increasingly at a disadvantage too. We are pretty obnoxious about not requiring language studies; like they did when I was in school. I can't say Latin did me much good. Girls always took French. Guys Spanish or German. Leave it to a goof like me to forget all the Latin I ever learned. What waste. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/sigh.gif

Charlie,

As much as I hated the numerous years of latin and ancient greek I took, I finally find it useful when running into a word I don't know. The roots of a lot of words, or languages for that matter, derive from these 2.
But trust me, when I was a teen, this crap made me crazy, and I hated it with a passion...
Why???? Because nobody spoke these freakin languages! ;;D

Brian, you had me doubting my spanish literacy. It's been a while, but I was right dammit. ;;D

"Consígame a un hospital y déme las porciones de inyecciones de la morphine!" means "Get me to the hospital and give me lots of morphine injections."

If I remember my spanish, Consigame is Get me and Llevame is take me...so either are interchangeable, I think... [smiley=huh.gif]

And Jonny Living here in Canada with it's policy of two official languages and in French Canada at that, I can't even begin to tell you the mess that it constantly creates to the point of possible separtion of a country that always looms over our heads.
