Title: Need Laptop cheap
Post by catlind on Oct 4th, 2005, 7:13pm
Does anyone know where I might find a laptop at a relatively inexpensive price?  My dell has last 4 long years and doesn't owe me a dime, but unfortunately it's being held together with duct tape right now hehe.

How cheap is cheap?  Dell Direct's lowest price for a notebook is $499 right now... iBooks are as little as $999 from the Apple Store... If ya don't mind takin' a chance, TigerDirect.com may be able to give you a good deal... Other than that, maybe eBay?

Cat,

Try here. (http://usanotebook.com/) I helped my brother pick  out the IBM ThinkPad T21, it did seem expensive but still a good deal compared to the cheap new ones.

Hi catlind

I have an extra HP Pavillion that I can sell for $200.00. It has a Pentium III processor and 250 Megs of memory. The hard drive is not very big 6 Gigs but it will do. It also has a docking station so you can use your regular monitor, keyboard and mouse while at home.

There is one cosmetic problem with it: The dog ate the cord so I had to patch it together. and the battery is not good.

Except for that, it is in good condition and it has a DVD player. At the moment, I have Linux installed on it but I will put Windows on if you prefer that. It comes with the HP full recovery disks.

If you remember, I got my refurbished Dell Inspiron 1100, for $650, almost 2 years ago (I am just in LOVE with it!).  You helped me to decide what to buy, hehe. ;)

I got it off eBay from I believe, seller "tech-bargain".  I just checked them out and currently they don't have any items for sale, but you could always put them in your favorites.  I also bought my hard drive from "laptophdd" who is a reputable seller.  I had to get the hard drive because I damaged mine (I think many remember that, LOL). ;;D

Anything else you need, let me know!

love,
:)mel

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 that I bought 4 years ago.  This machine doesn't owe me a dime.  It's been a work horse and then some.  The problem is that getting the hinges repaired (the quotes so far range from $250 to $400).  Well Hell I'll buy a new machine for that.

I don't need fancy video cards, I don't need fancy sound cards, what I need is a reliable, tough laptop that can handle database and program crunching (some very large databases) and that can be travelled with without me breaking my shoulder LOL.

I'm looking at IBM thinkpads because they have good reviews and are light.  Don't get me wrong, I love my Dell, it's been everything I could have wanted and more, I just wish they still made the 5100 :(

Any input on Acers, IBMs etc are welcome.

As a side note, I owned a Compaq when HP bought them out, I will NEVER NEVER own another one.   Every single thing on that machine broke while under warranty and they still tried to charge me for it.

p.s. nice to have, 1024 ram, 60gig (80 would be better) 2.0 ghz/ 400mhz fsb(as min.), and L2 and all the bells and whistles that will help a system crunch C and Zim, Oracle, SQL etc.,  just the standard goodies ;)

Oh did I mention I want it for say $500? LOLOL
This is what I'm currently running (with a few upgrades)
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Processor Speed 2.34 GHz
Memory (RAM) 512 MB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
