Title: Heart Attack and CH
Post by ClusterChuck on Oct 1st, 2005, 4:52pm
While here in Oslo, at Svenn's klasehodepine symposium (see, I even learned some Norwegian! That means Cluster headache) I talked with one of the doctors about those of us with heart trouble, and our use of imitrex, or any triptans.  I will do a full report, later, when I can get more of the information translated, but I have a question to ask.

Question 1:
How many of you have a heart problem, or have had one or more heart attacks?

Question 2: What does your doctor say about you taking triptans?

For myself, as you know, I have had quite a few heart attacks, and my doctor will not let me take triptans.

What does yours say?

And, as an add-on, all of you other clusterheads, how many full imitrex shots does your doctor say you can take in a 24 hour period?  (Not how many do you take, how many does your doctor say you can take.)

Chuck

edited to add last question.

Question 1 - I've been told that I have blood flowing backwards in one of my ventricles. (?) Is that the same as PFO?

Question 2 - The day is coming when I will no longer be able to use Imitrex

Question 3 - "Use what you have to use" (as many as needed)

UNsolved

I look forward to hearing about your trip when you get back. Take Care !

me

Verapamil caused a heart blockage at high dosage for me, doc still recomends trex as an abortive if o2 isnt available or an extra bad hit

2 full shots in 24 hrs, he likes the 2ml shots I take alot better

I will do up to 4 20mg ns of imitrix as perscribed.  I have no heart history but my family does.  Both grandparents and both parents have heart disease.   That is another reason why it is good for me to be on a preventative that works and not taking abortives.

1. I'm at high risk for a heart attack. Overweight smoker, almost post-menopausal, with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a strong family history.

2. My doctor says NO to triptans. It would be like asking for a heart attack, according to him.

edited to add: oh, and add to the risks that I've already had a massive brain hemmorhage.  :-/

Chuck I'm sure you already know this, but I will contrbute.  Pardon the typing and spelling, anti anxiety drugs have me even less sharp than the push end of a thumb tack. (read rehash topic)

I was doagnosed with palpitations at the age of 16.  First offcial recorded CH attacks were in 2000, with a possible in 96 and 98.

I have since gone in for inpatient DHE treatment at which time cardiology found me an anomoly, really fast heart rate, really low BP (outside of an attack) and then BP goes through the roof.  They've labelled it prinzmettal angina - whatever the fuck that means.

So there ya have it.

The cyst/tumor in my pituitary may or may not play a role.

Well I have hypertension and go through some episodic bouts of Sinus Ventricular Tachycardia (SVT when heart rate goes up into the 200s) - for me, this appears to be triggered by meds called phenothiazines like Compazine.

Can't take imitrex - makes my already tachycardic heart feels like it's going to flipping explode.  But I do use frova and amerge.  Was allowed to try Zomig NS, but after a few runs on it, I realized it was giving me a significant amount of chest pains/rapid heart rate once again - so am now relying just on the amerge and frova out of the triptans.  Zero problems there.

Can take 2 in 24 hours - but also with the limit of no more than 2 days per week.  We've worked it out and he does allow 4 days per week because of the fact that I work 4 days per week...and can't survive work  if I don't prevent the beast hits.

No heart attacks thank goodness although when I was more or less o/d'd on verapamil, my pressure was 60s/40s with a heart rate in the 40s (try that on for size when normally my resting HR is 90-100) and I couldn't get up off the floor.  Seriously thought I was having a heart attack until I realized it was from the verap.

Carrie :)
