Okay, most folks here know I usually keep my head shaved, mainly because I am 'folically challenged' and I always say, if you can't grow it - mow it. Well, I've been letting my hair grow for awhile but have been ready for a shave. If you're a musician, you got to have a look.

I recently moved to the worst area of town (tha hood) and everyone has been warning me not to shave my head. However, I am starting up an indie record label and also promoting my music once more, and need to take pics for the site and the next CD cover. Initially I thought that it might be best to keep the hair, but being the Taurus I am, said "I will not let someone's stereotype of me set the limitations of what I can or cannot do. I am not racist, sexist or a Liza Minnelli fan."

What would you do in this situation?

My decision was already made upon the 3rd time of getting out of bed due to sleeplessness. As the razor slipped across the noggin' pulling up the stubble a song popped into my head. It is from the band "My Chemical Romance" and is called "It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Death Wish." But alas, no turning back now.

Dude I wouldn't care where I lived, I'd do whatever I wanted to. No body is gonna decide anything for me. Of course, if I lived where you do, they'd think I was that "crazy white dude" and be scared of me. lol. Now on a more serious note, having a bald head in these times is not the statement it once was. Many men are going this route, all races as well. I think the people who are telling you not to do it, are sterotyping.

Hmmm what would I do, thats a hard one.
I went bald a couple of times, so I can say I tried it but I didn't like it ;-) I would keep my hair!

But if I was a man, I would do what I wanted to do!

I vote for doing what you want to do. I am from da hood and never bothered. People know who strangers are and usually keep an eye on them whether they be white, black or purple. People who stand out cause they have a different style do just that stand out. But exposure usually cures the stares or questions. That is human nature. I remember growing up with dreadlocked people. Inthose days only rastafarians wore them and were really stared at and judged when in a strang surrounding and mainly by other black people. To this day many black people who go dread are frowned on by their families sigh.. But now everyone and his brother are wearing them and you see them in coporate offices. Exposure is always the cure.

Always follow your on drummer.........

Thanks. I don't think I'll have any problems really.

Speaking of drummers... when I had Act of God together my drummer tried to tell me a joke and I went and ruined it on him.
He asked, "What's the difference between a Domino's Pizza and a drummer?"
I replied, "Um, The pizza is usually on time."
He just looked at me and then responded in disgust for having ruined the joke, "Well, I was gonna say the pizza will feed a family of four."

What do you call someone who hangs around musicians? A drummer

Get a real job so you can move out of the "hood".

The energy expended in a job search coupled with the secure feeling that you will not have to stay in the "hood" will help you sleep.

Carl Granite aint nearly as bad as Washington park area of East Stlouis, or Kinlock over by the Airport. Shoot could them blessings. ;;D of course granite is not a great area either, but if necessary I too would live there cause there is deffinatly worse. :o I kinda envy you at least you didnt get forced to move to Texas or loose your job with little chance of finding a good one where you are. But I digress I chose and will live with my decision.

I know alot of handsome bald guys......years ago I hated baldness till I really got to see more of it.....and have seen it change the look of so many dreary balding age looking guys that wouldn't take off there hats cuz of it. Shaved there heads and became age less........they looked so good verses the ageing apeal. Really amazed me the difference and seen it change alot of guys stuck in a rutt not happy with the hairloss they could do NOTHING about and how it made them look. Brad LOVES it !!!! To sum it up......there bald good guys and bad guys......rich and poor......it's what you wannna be Pam

Wear a west coast choppers stockin cap for that DIFFERENT look when ya shave it. Around here it keeps yer head warmer too and looks kinda cool. Course I like Jessie James............he's wierdly cool.

PS: Chasein a real job where ya get paid next week would be good also while startin the record label stuff so you KNOW you can keep yerself safe fed and mobile.

It's George Carlin that said that it's Blacks guys that look good with a shaved head. He also said that everybody needs to spin back the baseball caps. It's over.

I can understand your concern if you're in the hood... skinheads (or lookalike skinheads) aren't amongst the most popular... but do what youf feel is right, just carefully! ;)

One not all white guys look stupid with shaved heads. Only the ones who don't shave it daily and they have stubble.

Two do what you want and screw the rest of them. If someone wants to start a fight, they'll find any reason so you might as well be comfortable.

Three, love the drummer jokes, i'll have to send those to all my drummer friends.

This is what I was talking about. The pasty face white guy with a 4 o'clock shadow over the top of his head just looks dirty and sloppy. It's as bad as the half bald jerk with a comb-over.
Get out in the sun or let it grow. If the guy is naturally bald or has very light colored hair it looks just fine.

I don't think I have anything to worry about...

This morning I got hit and went outside barefoot to walk the cold sidewalk, hoping the blood would rush from my head to my feet. Wound pacing and holding my head for a few, cussing under my breath. There were a couple of people outside when that happened, and didn't think about it until a bit later that, I must have looked pretty crazed to anyone who doesn't know.

That is cool. No one messed with our house in E St Louis cause they all thought my dad was nuts (he was). Then again who would think that about a guy who goes outside while the neighbors are partying loud oustide at 2am, and then does some target practice with a tree, blowing it in half with a hollow tipped bullet? [smiley=laugh.gif]

My father was racist (and so was his dog - not kidding). My father was also very abusive. Those are two of the most disgusting things in the world to me. I thank God that I am NOTHING like my father!

PS - Um, Don - trust me, I won't be here long. In case you didn't know, music IS a job and I am in the process of building back up students and starting to teach guitar and bass here again soon. ;)
