Title: Hurricane Rita
Post by TxBasslady on Sep 21st, 2005, 1:01am
I'm a native Houstonian...been thru lots of Tropical Storms, and Hurricanes in my life.

I am preparing to leave, and intend to be on the road as soon as possible on Wednesday.    I have a real eerie feeling about this Hurricane.    One thing for sure, if she comes in at Galveston, I'll be damn glad I left.

I only live 70 miles inland.   The area of concentration appears to be along the Gulf Coast anywhere from Galveston to Matagorda Bay.   That's not a very large span of Gulf to consider.    Galveston/Houston area is due...it's been a while.    Speculation is for 100+ mph winds to reach inland about 75 miles.   That's a bit too close for me.  Even if she hits west of Houston,  history shows a NE turn once they make landfall. Either way, my best bet is to be gone.

I have spent the day collecting important papers; insurance, titles to vehicles and homes, birth certificates, and most importantly pictures of my boys and my grandchildren.    Geez...I never realized just how many pictures I had on the wall!

I'm headed northeast..to Toledo Bend Lake.   The lakehouse is further inland than I am here, and I will be safe and sound there.    My oldest son and his family are going to remain at their home, but the other 2 boys and their families will leave as soon as they can.

The Interstate is already a mess....and the lines at the gas stations are unbelievable.    Schools have already been closed and a mandatory evacuation of Galveston is only hours away.

I have so many huge trees in my yard...one is an old oak tree that my Aunt planted here in 1956.    It's a gorgeous tree....and it covers my entire roof-top.   I can only hope that she'll withstand the storm and the high winds.

I have to laugh...I thought I would grab only what I really needed...'ya know...just the papers and the pics.  Damn, I could use a U Haul...LMAO   [smiley=huh.gif]  And for every minute I sit here, I see one other little thing I need to take.

What would really make me happy is to come back in a few days, and be able to return these precious items to their normal sitting place in our home.   I suppose I'll know by Saturday or Sunday...and if things work against me, I'll be ok.   At least I had the time to take the things that are most precious.   All of the rest can be replaced.

To the others in the path of this storm, I'll be thinking of you....I'll say a prayer and keep you in my thoughts.

Much love,

Jean

This one is bringing a lot of rain. The center of the storm missed my house by 200 miles or so, and I still got 9 inches of rain. It was only Cat 1 when it went through here, it's now a Cat 4.....

The guy from NOAA was just on the radio here in Florida... from the Miami Hurrican center...this is what he said:

Quote:
We think the Hurricane is going to continue to head west.. according to the Computers... but do to changing weather conditions over the weekend, we are not sure where the thing is going to end up at this point... Anyone living along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas need to watch the weather over the next 4 to 5 days... there is a possibility that it will stall in the Gulf and gain strength.....

So as I said in the begining.. they can only guess....
Like Pam said.. its like predicting a CH attack...

Just keep all the CHer's that live along all the Gulf states in Your Prayer's and Thought's....

God Bless Everyone !!!!

We just had a severe weather warning posted for Bell County (just south of Waco and a three hour drive from Houston). Appearantly, Rita is supposed to maintain its Hurricane status and not become tropical storm until it reaches the Waco area.

Looks like we are in for a soaking..

My heart is heavy here, but we can both just hope for the best. I don't want to see "Rita" go anywhere, but, unfortunately, it has to.

Just make sure you're headed in the right direction. It still depends on exactly where she comes in as to who'll be safe.

Drive safe Jean.  And everyone along the path.  Just take a few days off and go.  All of this is just breaking my heart.  Everyone, please go.  Fly, drive, bus, walk....just go...and please take your pets.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help anywhere.  You will all be in my prayers.  Please be safe.
Don't forget to go empty your bank accounts and safe deposit boxes.  Get vet records for your pets, and put tags on them or get them microchipped.  Get extra medications, especially insulin.   If you have room in your car, go to a local nursing home, or senior center or somewhere, and see if someone wants to tag along who can't drive and has no family.
I'll stop now.....I just hate this....
Be safe....

The Latest out the Miami Hurrican Center....

Quote:
.INTENSITY...
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 140 MPH WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. RITA IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE. SOME
ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS AND
RITA COULD BECOME A CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE OVER THE CENTRAL GULF
OF MEXICO.

If You or Your Loves ones are anywhere near this thing... Do Your Loved Ones a Favor.. and :

GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE !!!!

They are saying now that this one could be stronger than Katrina, by the time it makes landfall...

Sorry, Just worried about All Our Family here...
Go stay with Friends or Whatever... Do not try to ride this thing out... !!!

Godspeed to all our Texan friends.  Please do get out of the area as soon as possible.

Our Houston office (head office) just evacuated and our VP is headed north of Dallas (said it was the northernmost reservation he could get).  He says the freeways are already overcrowded.  The Houston mayor just ordered evac of the lower lying areas.

Please stay safe!  Den, Georgia, Jonah and Adam - this means you too, ok?  Get the heck outta there!!!

CAT 5!

This seems more like a movie than reality. First Katrina, and now Rita. I read somewhere this morning that if Rita hits NOLA with the same force as Katrina, it could wipe out New Orleans completely with no chance of rebuilding. I still can't help but think the events of the last couple of years are the preamble to the apocalypse.  :-/

Saying a prayer for you southerners in Rita's path. Get out and fast!

Peace,

As Marty said before, we are in central Texas just an hour south of Waco and an hour north of Austin... Not a direct hit like Houston but close enough where they are getting concerned around here..

Seems so strange to be the ones to have to worry about the hurricane hitting instead of just watching and praying for others. When we moved here, four months ago, I was worried about tornadoes.. never thought of a hurricane.. :-/

Hoping for the best for everyone in the path...

You are out of your ever lovin mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF are you thinking??  Rita has a central pressure of 897mb, that is the 3rd strongest hurricane EVER in the atlantic basin.  If Rita hits anywhere within the range expected, you will be sitting smack dab in the middle of the right front quadrant, with a cat 5 that means total destruction.

You won't need to worry about fishin from the porch, you'll be the bait...the fish will enjoy you as a meal as they pick through what's left of the coast there.

Have you once thought about what you will put all your friends and family through??  I've seen first hand the absolute anguish of a hurricane victim looking for a loved one.

Do me a favor, write your social security number on your forearm in permanent black marker so they can identify your body after it's all over.

Somebody call Jean. The projected storm track has shifted north. She posted that she's at a lake house on Toledo Bend Lake. Toledo Bend Lake is a big lake (about 60 miles long) right on the Texas/Louisiana border about halfway between the Gulf coast and Arkansas. As of last night, Rita was expected to hit just south of Galveston. Now it's expected to hit north of Galveston near the the Texas/Louisiana border. The worst part of the hurricane with the heaviest rainfall is the northeast quadrant. Look where the northeast quadrant is expected to be on Saturday - right on top of Toledo Bend Lake. Expect 70+ mph winds on that lake on Saturday and major flooding of that lake and the surrounding area on Saturday and Sunday. If I were Jean, I would get out of there early tomorrow morning and drive 280 miles (5 hours, traffic permitting) to Little Rock, Arkansas, and get a hotel room there for 2 nights. Better to be safe than sorry.

On the MSNBC news it says Rita is a catagory 4 now, winds at 145 with gusts at 178.

About a hour ago it was a catgory 5, winds at 176 and gusts at 202.

I sure don't like the looks of the outer winds. I think New Orleans is going to get a good blowing again.

We are in Hammond, LA.  There are about 20 of us staying in our fifth wheels while we work down here.  Can't beg, borrow or steal a hotel room.  Cat's husband Clark has told us we should be ok......if there are no wobbles or wiggles in the storm.

I'd feel much better if I had four solid walls surrounding us.  Don't like being NE of this thing.

OK

I talked to Jean about an hour ago or so.

She was still at the lake house and not budging. Her son with the 3 grandbabes is stuck on the road in that hellacious traffic. GOD awful news on that, talk on the news here of setting up road side shelters!!!!!!!!!

She's very worried about them on the road, given the time they've been stuck in traffic, they should arrive sometime tomorrow. Poor dears, left with only 8 Dr. Peppers and they were all gone already.

I told her to tell her son to run up to some other car and beg for food or water for them kids, it's not like the traffic ain't moving slow enough.

Anyway, she said she had made it to the store for supplies. I told her how I was worried about her location.

She was pissed to see that she had hauled all her precious stuff with her, and here she sits probably in MORE danger than at home.

I know her, she WILL NOT budge until her family has safely reached her.

BUT, please...............ALL who can............call her and warn her that the minute they get there they need to head out.

I'm really worried about their location. The worse side of the storm............AGH

And, Tracey, find you guys a shelter. DAMMIT, you know these shits. I do NOT like the idea of you being in a camper honey.

AND, HAMMOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!       You've been right fuckin in Hammond and I didn't know???????    ;) ;) :) :)

I'll find you soon. Now take the advice you would give any of us and get yourself to someplace safer. Leave the damned camper behind and head out toward Mississippi or something. Plenty of cluster head family all over the place honey.

Jean you too.

I'll let you guys know if I hear anything else.

be safe,
EDNA

I have no excuses, only that we've been working our butts off since we've been here.  And the cell service....all I can ever get is that damn recording...."due to hurricane Katrina your call cannot be completed".

We can't even put the State Farm signs on the trucks....people just mobbed the vehicle.  Looks like I'll be heading to Houston in a week or so.  We need to hook up before I head out.

Clark says that we are safe here for Rita....it's these 10 story high pine trees that have me a little worried.  They are already weakened from Katrina.....and the ground is soooo soft.  Oh well, can't work when it's raining so it's a.....

HURRICANE PARTY NOW!!!!!  We did stock up on Margarita fixin's, along with gas, diesel, etc.

I just spoke with Jean.  She is staying put and waiting on her kids/grandkids to arrive.  They've been stuck in traffic for hours and hours and hours.

She's in a mobile home, but said she has a building  they can get into.  I honestly think that is better than trying to brave the expressways right now.  Cat's husband says that flooding may be a problem where Jean is.

I told her to head north, but nooooooooo.....she's not stubborn or anything like that..... ;;D.  Cat posted a pic of the damage area......at least for what it is saying right now.

OK...here's the deal...just got off the phone with the TxBassLady....

Jean's lake, Toledo Bend, is 10 feet low.  Her house is on very high ground.  She's talked to Clark (Cat's Clark) and he thinks she'll be just fine.  I trust what Clark thinks.

Now.....she's in a bit of a fit because her son and family is caught in the evacuation.  They have been on the road for 7 hours and have gone less than 30 miles.  She hasn't heard from him in the last 4 hours.  She feels that he's fine but will feel better when he calls.  She's keeping the phone free so her son can call

Jean appreciates the concern but says to let you all know that she'll be fine......especially when her son gets there.

Roxy....I'm more worried about you.  Hurricane party in a 5th wheel....... ::)  Watch your business, toots....

Jonny...you're not to worry.... :P  I'm not worried (much) but sure as hell will be glad when all this is over and all are well and accounted for.....seems like we just went through this.

Yep.....good, caring and loving family here.... :-*

Oh yeah.....I forgot.

Jean can't get online because she is trying to call her kids.  Their cell just keeps going to voice mail.  If I remember right, her lake house is dial up, so she's using her phone line.

Title: Re: Hurricane Rita

I talked to Jean, and Clark -- she is definitely safer where she is now than where she was.  There will be significant flooding in the area, but she says the lake is dry as is the canal.  Clark said they should be fine where they are at.  If the lake were full that might be different.  Based on her location and her description of where they are situated elevation wise, Clark thinks they should be relatively ok.  There will be flooding, and they will see lots and lots of rain, and certainly some wind, but from everything Jean told me, they should manage ok.

Cat

p.s. Jean only has the one line, and she is trying to get ahold of her kids to see if they are ok and where they are.
Clark is going to monitor the analysis for Hwy 59 so he can let her know when and if she should worry.

Fer what it's worth.... I gotta buddy in Beaumont, that has no choice but to Hang In: no gasoline available, all roads lookin like a parking lot... but he still had electricity as of an hour ago, his wits about him, water and a stash of food and some friends ready to fucking SURVIVE, my address and directions and a place to stay here in Austin, and a real GOOD ATTITUDE... I think that is as important as anything....

He has been trying to leave--he's not one of those who thinks that he's gonna be a tough guy and fight it out, but he's also RESOURCEFUL and will be there to help when the storm passes by. Let's just stay supportive of these folks and do what ever we can to help. Austin already has absorbed 40,000 plus from Loozyana and it looks like another 400,000 to a million are on the way from Houston. (including the folk from N'orlins)....

enuff rambling... I just want y'all to know we appreciate yer concern down here in Texas and to anybody needing a place to crash in Austin:

take Louis Henna Boulevard---which is about 15 miles north of Austin in Round Rock--- right off I-35 northbound and head EAST to High Country Boulevard--take yer third left onto Winding Way and we're the red brick on the right corner....

3225 Winding Way -Round Rock TX.... 1.512.801.8943

oh yeah... I gotta agree with this guy:

Jean already knows that she can come up here and stay if she needs to.  I also talked to a friend of mine who lives in Lake Charles and he and his wife are staying.  He said that he lives north of I-10 and the house that they live in weathered Audrey, so he feels that they can weather this one too (his wife is too sick to move and he feels that the stress of trying to move her would not be good).  He already knows that he can pull his travel trailer up to our shope if need be.

If anyone else needs a place to park it, let me know via private message.  We have plenty of room and could get everything ready in a very short amount of time (have commercial electrician living across the road, so shit can be taken care of in a short time).

Just heard from Jean. SHE wanted to know if "I" was ok. Imagine that!!!

As Jackie said, she was thrilled that her son and the kids finally made it there, and they feel safe enough to stay put.

So, until it's passed, we watch out for one another.

So far here, we're alredy getting the squalls of rain, nothing too bad. A bit of wind that has all the trees shaking, but it's ok.

The worse part is that New Orleans if having some flooding in the same areas again!!!!!  And we haven't even had all the rain that's coming.        :(

Everyone be safe,

Just wanted you all to know that we're just fine.

There's a few clouds, and it's sprinkling rain.    All 3 vehicles are gased up, generator is ready, and we have plenty of food, water, gatorade, and Kudzu   LOL.

By far the worst thing for me was not being able to reach my son for hours on end.   He got gas in Humble, Tx at 8:30 yesterday a.m.  At noon he had driven a total of 25 miles.    That was the last time I had any contact with him until midnight.   At midnight, he had driven a total of about 80 miles.    16 hours....and they were hungry, thirsty and very tired.   When the gas stations sold all their gas, they closed the doors.

Cars were stopped....moved very little.   He said he looked to the right shoulder and noticed a lady and 2 small girls with 2 large ice chests.    This lady had made ice tea and brought cups, ice and the tea out of her home to the shoulder of the highway, and as she poured the tea in the cups, her daughters walked to the vehicles and offered the tea to the motorists.   My grandkids had been 7 hours with nothing to eat or drink, and this was a welcome sight for them and all those folks on that highway sitting in 101 degree temperatures.    Folks offered $$ to the lady, but she refused.   She said it was the least she could do.    Later when my son and family were sent on a unexpected detour, they sat in a gas station parking lot trying to get a signal on their cell, and a security officer at the Indian Reservation, approached them and offered them the use of his cell to call me.   He offered them food, and something to drink.    Geez, they had $$, they just couldn't find any place open to get anything.

So many Counties had ordered evacuations, and had barracades in place.   Of course, these were on the route he needed to take.    Sheriff's Deputies cut him some slack, and allowed him to enter a couple of areas when they probably shouldn't have.   This allowed him to make the final 55 miles in 4 hours, instead of probably another 15 or so.   So, it took them 20 hours on a trip that is normally only a 3 hour drive.

You guys will never know how much I appreciate your thoughts and concerns.   I called Jackie and Bill today just to touch base and let them know that we are fine.    I called Edna...cause I knew she was getting a little wind and rain, and wanted to be sure they were ok.

We'll be fine.     Clark said the Sabine River was marked to flood, but the River Authority has dropped the lake level 10 1/2 ft to repair some areas on the damn, and Clark confirmed that the lake would have to fill to pool, before any flooding would happen.   I just don't think it's gonna rain more than 10 ft   [smiley=huh.gif]

I promise to check in later...we may lose power, but I will check in by phone with Jackie, Cat or Bill, and let them know how things are going.

Love to all of you...thanks so much!

Jean

Jean, you have my home phone and my cell phone.  Probably wouldn't try to call Redneck about now, he's on a bit busy with the Special Needs shelter here.    Just walked outside about an hour ago and the wind was coming out of the east/southeast.  Probably will get some nasty weather here, but that's okay, getting the generator in the morning, checked the flashlights/batteries, checked the oil lamps got my handy dandy polyperk coffepot (you'd rather face rita than me without my morning coffee), already have plenty of water on hand (if needed, which probably won't because the rural water system also has a generator now, since a bad freeze several years back) we're set to go.

Jean just called....

They are doing fine.  The power has been out for a few hours but they have the generator fired up...the frig is plugging in, lamps, fan and TV (Direct TV still working....she can't believe that one).

They have plenty of everything they need....Jean says the only thing she's short on right now is patience.... :P  It's been a long stressful haul for sure.

The winds and rain are slowing a bit.....her guess is topped out at 60mph.

Her other kids are fine .....the Houston house is OK too.

Whew........

We survived too.  Didn't have electricity for about 24 hours, but we had the generator going.  Good bit of wind at times and some rain.  Only *problem* was I was moving our grill (solid cast iron and jsut about 300 pounds) clloser to the house and set the damned thing down on my foot by accident (hurts like hell).
