Title: Speaking of Classic Oldies - Sixteen Tons Post by Carl_D on Sep 20th, 2005, 10:29pm Written nearly 60 years ago by Merle Travis, Tennessee Ernie Ford's B side of the then controversial song was recorded on September 17th 1955. I remember my dad playing this song all the time when I was a wee little kid and always loved the deep bass tone of Ernie Ford's voice. I can remember sitting in the back seat of the car waiting for my mom to get off from work, watching my dad mouthing the words to the song. Tennesee Ernie Ford was a favorite tho. My dad and his brothers sang on the radio on Sundays in Kentucky believe it or not. Wish I knew what happen'd to that record.....was a 78 lp. I can't even count how many times I fell asleep listening to soft classical tunes as a kid... :) My dad loved The Beatles, Tom Jones and Simon & Garfunkel. I found all his old LPs after his death. It's kind of nice to listen to them every now and then and know that he listened to them on many, many occasions. Why he didn't listen to them when I was already here, I have no idea. Sanna |

Hank Williams and Patsy Cline 24/7 with dad. Lots of 1950s stuff like Patti Paige and all the fifties standards. Dad's tastes went back to Eddy Arnold and even Cowboy Copas. Now that is old. Lots of turn of the century folk songs: Try "Filipino Baby," for example. Had a lot of classic country here and Bob Wills. I grew up with big bands, Les Paul and Mary Ford, 1940s war songs, and lots of folksy stuff. None of that funny rock stuff allowed. It wasn't much of a problem really. I still don't play music much. Strange. When I listen, it's most everything but rock. Charlie |
