From the Hebrew name Miyka'el which meant "who is like God?". This is the name of one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven's armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers. This was also the name of nine Byzantine emperors and a czar of Russia. Other more modern bearers of this name include the 19th-century chemist/physicist Michael Faraday and basketball player Michael Jordan.

English form of the Late Latin Jacomus which was derived from Iakobos, the New Testament Greek form of Ya'aqov (see JACOB). This is the name of two apostles in the New Testament. The first was Saint James the Greater, the apostle John's brother, who was beheaded by Herod Agrippa in the Book of Acts. The second was James the Lesser, son of Alphaeus. Another James (known as James the Just) is also mentioned in the Bible as being the brother of Jesus. Kings of England and Scotland have borne this name. Other famous bearers include the inventor of the steam engine James Watt, the explorer Captain James Cook, and the novelist and poet James Joyce.

Eric

Scandanavian meaning Honorable ruler

However my parents couldn't agree on a name.....

My father wanted Ariel (Ah-ree-el) and my mother thought that was weak though in Hebrew it means Lion of God.

So my father suggested a derivitive of that which is Arik (Ah-reek)

Then my mother came up with Eric and they agreed.
Eric is my English name and Arik is my Hebrew name.

I always liked the meaning of my name yet never was into my given name until I heard my wife say it ;)

Mine: Bob
Gender: Male
Usage: This is a laugher! My mother must have had a difficult or labor intensive childbirth with me to name me Bob. Reckon she did it out of spite knowing thousands and thousands of other boys were named Bob.
Additional Usage Info: To drive you nuts. Try this: Walk into the back of a room with 30 plus males and say: "Hey Bob". Count how many wrench their necks turning back to see if you're talking to them individually.
Other Useless Additional Info: So many Bobs, most have resorted to adding additional letters to their Bob name, i.e., Bobw, BobG, Bob P, and so on. I've had to add numbers to the back of my name just for individuality purposes. Note - This is a little plagarism (sp) from SteCo....sorry Steve, couldn't resist.
Fortunate Aspects Of The Bob Name: Mom could have added a second "O" between the Bs. Thank goodness she didn't think of that. Also, the name sounds the same spelled backwards or forwards.

Have A Great Day All!

From,
Bob

Hey Bob(s) click this

I don’t usually go by the name Bob. Only when I need to hide something. I usually use my real name.

ROBERT
Gender: Masculine
Usage: English, French, Scandinavian, Czech, Russian
Other Scripts: Роберт (Russian)
Pronounced: RAH-burt (English), ro-BER (French
Comments:
Most popular boys name from 1920 to 1939.
Means "bright fame", derived from the Germanic elements hrod "fame" and beraht "bright". Robert also is derived from the french "roi" meaning king or royal. So adding to the base form, the name Robert also means, "royal brightness".
The Normans introduced this name to Britain. It belonged to three kings of Scotland, including Robert the Bruce who restored the independence of Scotland from England in the 14th century. Also, Robert E. Lee was the commander of the Confederate army during the American Civil War (also known to those below the Mason-Dixon as the War of Northern Aggression).

Pamela

The name was invented in the 16th century by the poet Sir Philip Sidney for use in his poem 'Arcadia'. He possibly intended it to mean "all sweetness" from Greek παν (pan) "all" and μελι (meli) "honey".

Duh.....the link didn't show up when I first read this thread (dam slow dialup) so I didn't answer it correctly. Imagine that sweet Pam  8)

English form of Ματθαιος (Matthaios), which was a Greek form of the Hebrew name Mattithyahu which meant "gift of YAHWEH". Saint Matthew, also called Levi, was one of the twelve apostles (a tax collector). He was supposedly the author of the first Gospel in the New Testament.
