Friday, September 2nd, 2005

Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Michael Moore should be shot. He is a total waste of carbon and is only taking up someone else's space.
Actually he is taking up 3 or 4 spaces.

My idea of a solution, back when he first opened his fat gob about New Orleans, was to take him up to 2000' in a helicopter and then shove his fat ass out. Either the splash will drain all of the water from the flooded areas, or else his sloppy fat bulk could be used to shore up the levy. That's the only way he could make his life worth something.

Now, now, guys. Behave. Everybody deserves to live. You shoudn't want to shoot somebody just because you don't like that person's opinions. Freedom of speech is, after all, invented. Let him do his job, you do yours. If he gets some help arranged to Katrina's victims, he has earned his place on this Earth just like the next guy.

Michael Moore has enrolled in a $3,800 per week fat farm - the Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa in Aventura, Florida - in an attempt to lose weight. Moore is reportedly aiming to lose 12 pounds during the first three weeks, though somebody should inform him that 12 pounds is pretty worthless when you already weigh 400 pounds. I admire that he's not going the route of liposuction, but I really doubt that fat bastard has what it takes to lose weight the natural way. What he should be more concerned about doing is shaving that horrible excuse for facial hair he has going on. When you can throw down $3,800 per week at a spa, it'd be nice if you could look slightly more presentable than the homeless man who lives in the subway.

Oh gosh and let's not forget the Congress who slashed funding for the Army Corp of Engineers (or how much the budget was slashed under *I didn't have sex with that woman* Clinton). Let's not forget those Congressmen from that area.(both Democrats mind you) voted on those slashed appropriations bill.

Even though Governor's control the National guard, in any disaster the President has the Power and authority to activate the Nation guard at his order, usually in coordination with the Governor. You might take note that there are many National Guard personnel in Iraq as we speak, do you think that the Governors sent them over there?

This deal turned out about like I expected, something tells me the American people will lean the other way in the next election, for any number of reasons. Maybe that will shut some of you conservative's up for a little while.

The Guard has a unique dual mission, with both Federal and State responsibilities. During peacetime, the Governor through the State Adjutant General commands Guard forces. The Governor can call the Guard into action during local or statewide emergencies, such as storms, drought, and civil disturbances, to name a few. In addition, the President of the United States can activate the National Guard to participate in Federal missions.

and again

National Guard units can be mobilized at any time by presidential order to supplement regular armed forces, and upon declaration of a state of emergency by the governor of the state in which they serve.

NOWHERE did I see that the President can control the National Guard during a state emergency.

Even though a do not believe in Mr. Moore's diatribe's...I can not for the life of me say George Bush has done a good job in his second term.

He seems apathetic to the turmoils that face my family and a lot of the lower to middle class Americans.

The same as senators, congressmen, and nearly every president we've ever had, with the possible exception of Roosevelt, but only because massive poverty and the Dustbowl made it a national emergency.

Considering that a federal state of emergency was declared for Louisiana and other areas effected by Katrina, the president would have had the power to activate national guard and other reserves to those areas. A state of emergency, declared by the president, should permit the president to send any military personnel he (or more accurately the Pentagon) chooses to use.

Of course, it is normally the responsibility of the governor to call up national guard soldiers for a state of emergency, but then again, if those soldiers are already otherwise activated by the Pentagon, they wouldn't be available for the state's use anyways. Or something like that...

I think all levels of government are to blame in response, and prevention. Period.

I hope that we all can get past the blame game and focus on what is more important, preventing future disasters. It's a grim reality that will not go away. I've thought a lot about the article by National Geographic that BobG posted and all the research I've done about natural disasters that are waiting to happen. We've been so aloof and stuck in our little worlds that we plainly ignore what is on our doorstep.

I feel as much to blame as the hurricane, but what i need now, is to think of for today and tomorrow, because there are a lot of people out there right now who had the world ripped out from underneath them. And I don't think they'd care for me wasting my time pointing my finger at others. :-/

Eisenhower had to Federalize the Guard for it to be used to quell race riots in Alabama because the Governor wouldn't do it, but is it necessary here? I don't know. Not too bright on this stuff.
