Title: Is the water being cleaned? (O/T)
Post by Melissa on Sep 6th, 2005, 11:38am
I was just curious, is the water that they're draining from New Orleans right now, going to be sent to a treatment plant?  Do they have those for Lake Ponchartrain? (sp)  It looks so toxic and gross, I would assume someone has taken this into consideration?

Just wonderin :-/

OH man, the ripple effect is gonna be extremely NASTY. :o  The poor environment. :( :(

Also, and this probably sounds stupid so please forgive me, would a body get sucked into one of those things?  And if it did, would it plug it up?

Usually they try to keep a clear area around the intakes but yes it sould suck a body in. it would probably shread and deposit the remains out the other end ... possable to jam it though. But They do attempt to filter large debris out before it hits the intakes.

If they tried cleaning or filtering that amount of water before pumping it in there, it would take months to get it moved.

It's really going to foul that lake but they probably don't have much of a choice right now.

That's terrible! :o
I don't even want to know where that toxic water will go...
And it means that some missing people will stay missing forever, doesn't it? OMD... :(

Thanks for satisfying my curiousity ghost.  I don't know why such things pop into my head, but I usually can't rest until I have answers!  LOL

Pat, I understand that, but what I was wondering, is if the lake would be treated.  Almost seems detrimental not to.  Especially after a disaster of this magnitude. :-/

I hope that they plan on doing something to decontaminate the lake after they empty all of the water into it. I don't know if there is any way to clean up a body of water that big or contain the mess that is in it though.

large bodies of water eventually clean themselves..... it's just what they do.

The good news is as the are draining the petrolium based spills are attempting to be contained and removed if poss. they wont get all of it but will be able to get a large portion, because not only does it float but will usually stay intact if not disturbed. The chemicals and human waiste and such will not be easially contained. also even petrol based will breakdown and dispurse in the water over time. no matter how much you try there is almost no concivable way to get it all.
