Title: Have not seen this posted... Post by Jonny on Sep 3rd, 2005, 11:25pm Sorry, if it has been. Hurricane hackers use Katrina news to spread virus By Jesse Noyes Saturday, September 3, 2005 Hackers are exploiting Hurricane Katrina to attack computers with a virus and possibly tap into online users' bank accounts. An e-mail with a fake news blurb about Hurricane Katrina that takes advantage of a vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer to hack into computers is being sent to online users, a research group warned yesterday. ``The e-mail is actually posing as a news story regarding the hurricane,'' said Dan Hubbard, senior director of security and research at Websense Security Labs - a San Diego-based company that watches for online viruses. A link provided in the e-mail lures readers to the full news story allowing hackers to potentially take over the user's computer. Microsoft issued a warning regarding the vulnerability in its Web browser back in January. Typically these kinds of computer viruses are used to connect infected computers and access personal bank account information from unsuspecting users, Hubbard said. Websense also said hundreds of sites are posing as relief organizations for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Online users should stick with the charities listed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Hubbard said. Fraudulent Web sites have become so sophisticated that it's hard to tell them from the real things, he added. |

Title: Re: Have not seen this posted... Post by AussieBrian on Sep 4th, 2005, 1:42am That's looting by any other name and in time of natural disaster warrants the death penalty. I was in Townsville many years back when we copped a cat 4 cyclone and a local store-keeper tripled his price for roofing nails. He was beaten within an inch of his life. |
