Title: Would you leave your pet behind? Post by ckelly181 on Sep 3rd, 2005, 6:33pm This may seem trivial to some, but I've read that the buses out of NO ban pets, so owners are having to leave their animals behind. I can't imagine the situation these people are facing, but I also can't imagine having to leave my dogs behind. What a terrible choice. Would you leave your dog/cat/whatever behind? |

If you can not take care of yourself, you do not need a pet... A pet relies on you for everything.. But I live in Fla. near the coast, we have 4 Big Dogs & 4 cats... We have their shots up to date, we have 6 cages, 1 for each dog and 2 cats per cage....We are always ready during Hurricane Season... When we get the Wood ready for the Windows out of the Shed, we keep the cages close, so that if a storm was coming and we had to leave, we pack all the Cages into my Truck, and we load everything else in our Durango... Living here in Fla. we also try to alwas keep our Truck & SUV Gas tanks full, they say do not top them off all the time, but if you do not as soon as they say a storm is coming, you can not find gas if you wait till then. But No.. I could not leave my animals behind, as we tell everyone, they are all rescue animals and they are like Children to me & my Wife - Sassy_Lady. On another note, I know they are leaving those animals behind, but they have agencies there that are taking in the animals and going to be caring for them in shelter like conditions... where than can be reunited at some point. However, if I should have to leave, my plan includes taking the dogs, and their supplies. If this should keep me out of a shelter, then so be it. I would rather live in my truck. There is no way I would leave them behind. |

I would hate it to death but if I had to leave my pets behind to save my family I would just have to. I have to say though.... some of those poor families should not have pets in the first place. Its hard enough to feed their kids... God bless them all... sad stories about those people leaving their pets... I heard they have just gotten 3 Carnival Cruise ships for the excess 7,000 people that couldnt get into the Stadium... haha for those that ran to the beginning of the line....Carnival actually cancelled scheduled cruises to help out..... KUDO'S TO THEMMMMMMM..... love ree (i dont think they are allowing pets either...) |

As a matter of fact if it came down to it, if it got really really bad, I wouldnt have to many reservations about eating my pet. This comeing from someone who gave their dog mouth to mouth and cpr for 20 min, God I miss that dog, he was one of a kind. I love my animals but my kids come first. edited to add........I would put the animal down instead of abandoning it to starve. |

Charlie is my best friend. The closest damage I have hear is tornadoes. When tornadoes are sitted I take Charlie in the basement with me and go in the inner room and cover him with a blanket to lie next to me. If I couldn't take him with me I would either stay in what is left of the basement or take him to a friends and or neighbors house and then go to the shelter. |

This is something that I had to think about, not whether or not I would leace my pet behind but about those in that situation.. For me, there is no doubt that I would NOT leave my pets behind even if that meant walking to where I needed to go. When I adopted them, I made a promise to them that I would take care of them, love and nurture them, and to provide everything that they needed. They are like my children and even the thought of having to leave them is not possible.. That being said, the people that are in LA and Mississippi are in a tough bind - I can see both points of this, the buses not allowing pets and the people who want to bring them. Buses cant take pets for one because the trip is too long especially if stops arent being made along the way and there are so many people getting on each bus, there just isnt room. And we dont know whether these pets have had all of their shots and that, in itself, is a risk to the public and to other animals. But there is a group set up to rescue animals in these disasters, I saw it on the news when they were asking for donations. These animals arent being left behind to starve to death, they are being rescued by volunteers and I am sure efforts will be made to re-unite them with their owners. I worry more about the livestock than cats and dogs - they are small enough to put in a car or on a plane or whatever they are using but livestock, you need trailers to move them and it is hard to get to them right now. I heard one guy who raised miniature horses - three were killed during the storm but six were still alive. He was asking for anyone to come and get them because he didnt have enough food or freshwater for them. It was heartbreaking... So those are my thoughts - when we hope and pray for the best for these people, let us also remember the animals... Jill |

If something happen I would make sure my family got out but I would stay behind with our pets. Some people don't have a lot of money and they don't have anything more than their animals as their friend. I think a lot of people died because animals were ban from the dome. That little boy might get over losing his home, he will never get over losing his dog. He will hate police forever! |

I figure I would load the dogs in the big cap in the backa the big truck and the cats in the cab part. Birds and lizards in small cages to load up too. Bein deep in a valley surrounded by tall hills I think if worse got to worse I could let the dogs go so they ran to high ground if it was sumthing aweful comeing like a flood or storm. In Ohio we don't get hit really hard with the hurricanes tho and I love the coast but think I would be a TOTAL basket case worrying dureing hurricane season and would probly NOT have as many pets as I do now. And I would have a plan......good for you Charlie......you have one !!! Cats are first priority Pam I even keep stocked up on cann'd animal foods and dry food in winter (year round actually) in case we get snowed in or in case sumthin happens and ya can't get out. PS: did anyone see the clip with the family that had mini horses and stayed ? He had 3 dead laying around in the yard caught in debri and NO FOOD for the 7 mini's in the wet gross barn. He wanted the mini horse club to come in and take the live ones and was crying. Very sad but that was a bad storm to risk staying in. |

Hell half the population that have children shouldn't have them either but that is another subject. And that has nothing to do with money either. It just has to do with sense, and wherewithal. When I see how people deal with the living whether animal or human it breaks my heart. During a dire circumstance, it would be very hard to leave my cat behind but a choice of life for me and my family would have to supercede the animals :'( :'( The story about the little boy crying over his dog makes me so sad :'( :'( :'( I thank God for those who are rescuing the animals and hope they can be reunited again with their families. We might leave them behnind but most pets would risk death to stay with us. The difference between man and beast...... I hope I never h ave to make that decision....I don't judge anyone's decision on this one. Perhaps if I was forced to leave my cat behind and see no one will rescue her I might put her down.. Tough call :-/ |

Most animals that you see on animal planets show about the animal cops is based on people being stupid and not keeping that promise that they made to take care of an animal, it is rarely based on financial reasons... It's really heartening to see the rescue efforts of the different agencies. Heck, even Geraldo helped rescue an elderly woman and her 15 1/2 year old poodle! Chris |
