Title: What to do to HELP........
Post by BarbaraD on Sep 2nd, 2005, 9:13am
In Texas as well as most parts of LA that are dry, we've seen people pouring in from New Orleans and other storm damaged parts of the coast with nothing. Churches are full, hospitals are full, motels are full.... it's unreal.

Now, you can give to the Red Cross and maybe something will trickle down to these people eventually (maybe????) or you can do something now. What a lot of us are doing is going through closets, kids toys, and shopping at WalMart, Dollar Stores, etc. We're taking this stuff to places where these people ARE right now. Clothes, toys, tolietries, shoes - people it doesn't matter what size and right now I'd say it doesn't matter what condition - they don't have ANYTHING. T-shirts, jeans, shoes, deodrant, diapers, tampons, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, blankets, towels, sheets, pillows -- look around your house at what you take for granted each day - got a spare - donate it to someone who needs it desperately.

We've got three churches in Gladewater (and I'm not sure how many in Shreveport) who've turned their rec halls into shelters for refugees. They're feeding hundreds of people (for how long we don't know right now).

I guess this is a good time to remember the Golden Rule -- Do Unto Others as you would have them Do Unto You.

Hugs BD

Way to go, Barb. Thank you to you, and to all who are helping out. Times like this really show what we are made of.

I was talking with friends last night and you know what they did? They called the Red Cross and offered to host  refugees willing to wait in NM. They can take up to 4 people in their house. I thought that was pretty damn cool. The RC said they're getting offers like this from around the country and are compiling lists of these generous people and will likely contact them soon.

I watched the local noon news for food drop-off places.  Driving to the ones near my house, the donations weren't yet quite the mounds and piles shown on tv, :(
bigger now.  This weekend will build lots more individual contributions.  Wish it was already delivered, yesterday.

Texas has been FANTASTIC.

That's so wonderful how you guys are helping out! :)

I'm going to ask mum if the Finland's Red Cross is going to have some sort of fundraising. If they will, I'm going to check it I can help out.

I think it's important to help out that the time of the crisis but I think that it's equally important to help out when the times are normal.

That's why I donate the clothes, books etc. I don't need anymore to charity. Every time my best friend buys some new clothes, she gives as many old pieces to charity. I think that's a nice thing to do. :)

Well being in Canada, as of yet they have not started any collections yet. Someone would have to arrange transportation and get the stuff over the border which I am sure would not be too hard. I think shoeboxes would be nice. People could make shoeboxes with themes, man , woman , child baby. The dollar store is the way to go for toiletries and even some toys and games. For those of you who can spare , you could donate towels, sheets, bigger items. All great ideas.

My company has been organizing a collection this week of canned foods, clothes, etc. A group will drive down to South Miami Dade to deliver the goods there. The nation's attention has been in the Gulf States, rightly so, but a few communities in South Florida are still flooded with no water, electricity, food, etc for 1 week now. Katrina hit us thursday night last week. Fema has not responded to the thousands of people left homeless here.

You know, I had a thought this afternoon when I was working on closets....

Doesn't OUCH have a lot of T-shirts that have been on the shelf for a while? Why not donate some of them to the relief effort? Find out where they are needed (Florida, Alabama, Georgia, MS, LA - whereever) and send some to some of our bunch there to get them delivered to the right place where they'll do some good. This is one way OUCH could help.

Just a thought

Very cool idea Barb.

Clusterheads make good neighbors.

For me, I took some stuff to the Salvation Army...some  that I never wore. Useless in my bedroom.

Nice going kids.

My roommate from Philly, Diane, just found out she's headed down with 9 people in 2 ambulances tonight...they leave here at 2am.  Long long drive!   They'll be 25 miles above NO and transporting people to hospitals.

Our university will be having sign up lists next week for people to go down and provide medical care in some of the hardest hit regions - Not sure if I can go yet until I see the lists and work out the logistics with work and all, but I'll be looking into it once the lists come out.

I feel like people who can't help with their money can help with their presence and any skills they have to offer.  That's how I'd be most useful, at least...!  We'll see.

Thanks for starting this thread, Barb!

Hugz,
Carrie/Lizzie2 :)
