Title: They're baaack...please help! Post by lady_bug on Aug 27th, 2005, 8:59pm Another cycle has begun for me within about the past 10 days (almost exactly 1 year from the last one) :'(... I would like to know everything about the "non-traditional" treatment options that I heard you all talking about at the convention, and any details you can provide such as; how to get them, costs, side affects, dosages, etc. My Neurologist can provide me with the usuals, but I'm ready to venture out. Thanks in advance for your help...you guys are best! |

Title: Re: They're baaack...please help! Post by BMoneeTheMoneeMan on Aug 28th, 2005, 10:04am Well, I am not an expert in treatments, but i have tried the clusterbuster treatment. During the beginning of my last cycle, when the CHs were still only 1 or 2 per nite and not that intense, i took a tea treatment. Got hit a little on the downside, guess that is normal. Then 2 to 4 days of no relief is common, then on day 4 or 5 it is common to get some relief. You cant have any other CH drugs in your system, certainly no trex. The shroomys could be responsible for diverting my cycle. I did another treatment the following week, and it did seem to reduce the severity of my cycle. It didnt break it all together, but it seemed to 'break it in half'. It seemed the severity of my CHs, although at 3 to 6 CHs per nite, were not too severe. That whole cycle, i only had a couple of CHs that went up to kip 8. Thats a success in my book. The shrooms didnt give me total relief, but they may be responsible for reducing the intensity of my cycle. Now i am thinking about doing preventative maintenance with the fungus...... we'll see. Have you tried the more traditional drugs? like prednisone or lithium? Some people say they both are effective in breaking the cycle, i have never taken. GL, PF wishes. BMonee |

Title: Re: They're baaack...please help! Post by Charlie on Aug 28th, 2005, 4:54pm Rats. Sorry the beast has found you. Here is my thing though. It worked well for me and I hope it can for you too. You have nothing to lose.... Dr. Wright’s Circulatory Technique: I am not sure what mechanism is triggered by this but whatever it is, at least indirectly helps kill the pain. I do know that this technique has nothing to do with meditation, relaxation, or psychic ability. It is entirely physical and takes some work. It involves concentrating on trying to redirect a little circulation to the arms, hands, or legs. It can described as a conscious circulatory flexing. Increased circulation will result in a reddening and warming of the hands. Try to think of it as filling your hands with redirected blood. The important and difficult part is that it has to be done without interruption through the pain. Do not give up in frustration. It may not work on the first try. Every now and then it will work almost immediately. I lived for those moments. Try experimenting between attacks. You will find that it gets easier with practice. I was given less than five minutes instruction in the use of method. The doctor, while placing his arm on his desk, showed me that he could slightly increase his arm and hand circulation. After several attempts, I was able to repeat this procedure and use it successfully. I have had about a 75% success rate shortening these attacks. My 20 minute attacks were often reduced to 10 minutes or less. Once proven that I had a chance to effectively deal with this horror, I always gave it a try as I had nothing to lose but pain. Perhaps it will help if you think of it as trying to fill the arm as if it is were an empty vessel. I used to try to imagine I was pushing blood away from my head into my arm. Use your imagination. There is one man who wrote that his standing barefoot on a concrete floor shortened his attacks. This may be similar as it draws some circulation away from the head. Cold water, exercise, or anything affecting circulation, seems to be worth a try. My suggestion is to not let up immediately when the pain goes. Waiting a minute is probably a good idea. So long as you do not slack off, this has a chance of working. This technique is very useful while waiting for medication to take effect or when none is available. It costs nothing, is non-invasive, and can be used just about anywhere. It is not a miracle but it helped me deal with this horror. It can be a bit exhausting but the success rate was good enough for me and a cluster headache sufferer will do just about anything to end the pain. It gives us a fighting chance. Charlie |

After 38 years with these nasty things this is the first time I've ever had a support system other than my immediate family...it's awesome! I am seeing the doc next week, he will put me back on Verapamil and probably a round of prednisone...with the Imitrex injectables as an option. I a soooo ready to try something new! I will read very carefully all of your responses and try some of your suggestions. Keep em' coming!! Love you all! Sandra |
