Title: Hurricane Katrina
Post by Edna on Aug 27th, 2005, 4:56pm
Seems as though it's headed our way here in Southeast Louisiana.

Stevegeebee, send me a word, I just pm you friend. Wishing you guys the best of luck with this.

Jean, looks as though New Orleans may have to wait for us, guess it's up in the air on next week.

Just wanted to let you guys know, we're preparing for the storms approach. Should make landfall sometime Monday.

Meanwhile, though, had to let the family know we're OK here for now.

hugs and prayers with all in the storms path,

EDNA

Thanks Edna.

Getting ready.

Those of you that have gone through these things know what we are feeling.  It's hard to put into words.  You want to ride it out...but..I don't know.  This one looks bad.

I'll let y'all know how its going.

Prayers go out to all in the path of this storm wherever it goes.  It's going to be a really shitty Monday.

Stay dry Edna. Find some higher ground.

Like Minnie says: here in Upstate, this kind of thing is foreign to us. By the time they get here, there isn't much left of them.

My advice is to head for the hills.  I knew it was inevitable as soon as I heard this one was named Katrina - today they were playing "walking on sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves.  Curse you, clear channel!!

Edna,

I know that you and SteveG know the routine, so I'll not harp on it.
You and Danny, Steve and Dianne have been there for enough years that you know when it's time to go.

My place is about 100 miles due north of Lake Charles off La171 on La191.  If either of you need a place to go...(and if the storms stays east of my place) you guys are welcome to use the lake house.

Just let me know if you think you might need it.  My husband is up there, and it wouldn't be a problem.

I'll be checkin' on y'all.    In the meanwhile, call me if you need too.

Much love,

Jean

Hello from the Special Needs Shelter Hell. This far north we will miss the worst. Just got a lull in activity here in the Regional Emergency Operations Center, and since I am the only one in the 2nd floor ops center with the triage phone line ( I have 9 nurses downstarirs i refer the calls to for the triage process) 3 radios, one for Baton Rouge, one for the shelter, and one for inhouse. Almost time to report numbers to Baton Rouge again. The nurses do most of the triage and get most info, but we get most of theirs situations here before referring them. These people are breaking my heart, every thing from no money, no transportation, etc. Phones ringing again, several hundred calls already today mostly from the New Orleans area. Keep your fingers crossed. Just got a call from a young lady that wanted me to tell her if the hurricane was going to hit avondale. Damn people, get the hell out.

Jimbo, one tired mutha,
I will get outta here at 2 am, started at 9 am. And will be back at 8am in the morning and no idea when I will  leave again.

Thanks for the offer Jean and others.

Just got a recorded phone call from the St. Tammany Parish President ordering a manditory evacuation.

Mayor of New Orleans recommended evacuation of the city and will likely officially order it early tomorrow morning.  This was prompted by a phone call to him form the National Huricane Center that this is the big one we have all been fearing.

Promised my next door neighbor that I would help him board up his house tomorrow morning.  His family left this morning and he offered to let Dianne and I stay at his house.  Our house is in a pine forest.  His house is less so.

It's strange...I walk out on the porch and listen to the hum of the cars from the Interstate 12 (which is about a mile from the back property line) drowning out the sound of the frogs and crickets... and I wonder, what will it sound like on Monday? What will it look like on Tuesday?

How our lives will change, from normal, in such a small span of time that will seem an eternity.

Good luck everybody.

Steve G

Just heard on the news that the city is going to be submerged because the pumps that keep the water out right now, are going to fail due to all the water that'll be dumped.

Also read part of this on the news story on Yahoo, and I just cannot BELIEVE it!! [smiley=nono.gif]

Quote:
Making matters worse, at least 100,000 people in the city lack the transportation to get out of town. Nagin said the Superdome might be used as a shelter of last resort for people who have no cars, with city bus pickup points around New Orleans.

Louisiana and Mississippi made all lanes northbound on interstate highways. Mississippi declared a state of emergency and Alabama offered assistance to its neighbors. Some motels as far inland as Jackson, Miss., 150 miles north of New Orleans, were already booked up.

Some tourists heeded the warnings and moved up their departures, and lines of tourists waited for cabs on New Orleans' famed Bourbon Street.

But plenty of people in the French Quarter stayed put, and bars were rocking Saturday night.

"The only dangerous hurricanes so far are the ones we've been drinking," said Fred Wilson of San Francisco, as he sipped one of the famous drinks at Pat O'Brien's Bar. "We can't get out, so we might as well have fun."

New Orleans' worst hurricane disaster happened 40 years ago, when Hurricane Betsy blasted the Gulf Coast. Flooding approached 20 feet deep in some areas, fishing villages were flattened, and the storm surge left almost half of New Orleans under water and 60,000 residents homeless. Seventy-four people died in Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida.

Katrina is the 11th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1. That's seven more than typically have formed by now in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, the hurricane center said. The season ends Nov. 30.

I'm sorry, but if you can afford to drink, you can afford to get out of town.  But alas yes, I know that some just really don't care what happens to them.  Too bad I do. >:(

I am so sad right now.  Just watched the weather channel and they had a very young mother on there with her 10 month old son.  They are not leaving, they have no transportation and no one they know has any room to take them with.  She says she would do anything to protect her son....

There are so many more people like her with young children that are not leaving.  :'(  I can't help it, but I have such an awful feeling about this whole thing that I'm becoming sick to my stomach. :(  I so much want to turn off the TV, but I am drawn to it.  I turn it off for 5 min, then have to turn it back on.  All the faces I see, the interviews with people just like me.  I can feel their helplessness (which pisses me off for some reason :-/).  I so wish there was something I could do.

Hey Cootie,

Usually there is some animal group that will go and collect the animals before the storm hits. Owners can report what pet they have, their name, and where they have left them and this group of volunteers will go and collect them. I am assuming that this will be the case, as I have never heard it not be.

Hopefully people will also think about their animals and report them and also put them somewhere safe like an upstair bedroom with plenty of food and water until rescue can take place.

Good luck to everyone who is in the path of this storm, hoping that everyone is safe and sound and not too much damage is caused. Also thoughts go out to the pets out there, they need it too..

A lot of people are bringing their pets with them (livestock too), we have one shelter here that will take small animals and there is another place you can put livestock.

This is getting nasty folks.  Last heard, 175 mph winds, hurricane force winds out 180 miles and gale force winds out 230 miles.  Eye is 30 miles across.   This is one big storm.  Gonna make camille look like a walk in the park if this keeps up.

My heart is breaking for those in L.A. and above.  My brother in law is from there and says it is 5 ft. below sea level and this storm will produce at least a 30 - 35 ft. surge.  It will be like nothing we in our time have ever seen.  It is unbelievable that L.A. hasn't been prepared for something like this for years.  It's NOT like it could never happen.

After seeing what Charley did to Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda Florida a year ago, (and Charlie was a small but strong hurricane), I am really afraid of what this one is going to do.

A catagory 5 is as high as they go at 150 mph.  Katrina is now 175 mph., almost as bad as a monster tornado.

Here is where she is now:

DonnaHar, i heard that the city was 25 feet below sea level.  Of course they have tried over the years to keep water out of the city.  There is an extensive dyke system, and pumps in the city to keep the water out.  They are typically only built at 15 feet though......not gonna help at all for this storm.

Its really interesting what N.O. has done to protect against water, you should check it out.

Coots, I do believe that wildlife sense this.  Just look at all the wildlife that headed for the hills before the Tsunami hit Indonesia, and that happened within a matter of hours after the earthquake!  Luckily some people who work with elephants were paying attention when they started to leave.  It ended up saving their lives.  As for the superdome, looks like we're at a wait and see right now.  There's about 35,000 people hunkered down in that thing.  Many are handicapped, ill, poor or tourists who didn't understand what was happening.  I pray for them all!

Gosh - I can't even fathom  how unbelievably frightening this storm has to be for all in its immediate path.  Seeing the news today and watching them continue to bump up  the landfall time was making me more and more anxious for all of you!

I feel so bad for those who couldn't get out - or maybe just didn't want to - but they worry me even more!

I know it's no consolation at the moment - but I do hope that our nation comes together to really bring a great amount of relief to that area after the hurricane moves through!

All of the prayers I've got are going down to NO and related areas!!!

Hugz,
Carrie    :-/

It's bad, very bad for anybody in New Orleans.  They did finally start setting up checkpoints yesterday for people who had no way of getting out.  Sent busses out to get them and then ferried  (sp) them to the Superdome.

New Orleans is below sea level, and they've been waiting for years for it to take a direct hit from a hurricane.  Looks like it's going to happen now.  Looks like they won't pray this one away like they've done in the past.

Well, it's 6:30 am here and jimbo has been on the phone
and Jimbo's been on the phone since he rolled out of bed at 6.

Watching the news just now and they did forced evacuation on Grand Isle yesterday.  Sheriff was telling people that if you didn't leave voluntarily, they were going to come in, handcuff them and take them out.

Hey all.
Hunkered down in Port Gibson MS with friends.  Will likely get a taste of it here as well...maybe cat 2ish.

Left Mandeville at 10:30 and arrived here at around 5:30.  Total miles...around 165. My daughter Sarah called me at 3:00am to let me know that she made it to Houston.  She left New Orleans about the same time as we did.

It looks now as if we may not have much of a home to return to.  Who knows how the job situation will pan out.  Life will change and we will move on.

Wife is really bummin'.

I'll write back.

Thanks,

If some one can pm deltadarlin Ednas  home address or phone maybe i can get my counter part in that area to check shelters and with emergency services there. I dont know when I will be able to get back on or check my normal emails.

Jimbo

I gotta go get some sleep while I can. To tired to type much, to depressing anyway. Phone never quits (when they work the entire cell and hardline system quit for awhile this evening) Just got a call from the lady on our 800# triage line. A family is trapped in the attic in their home in New Orleans. Fuck I aint but 5 hours away. All we can do is get the address to the Parish Office of Homeland Sec. in New Orleans, and let them know.  [smiley=bigcry.gif]

My counter part in New Orleans was overseeing the Superdome, his damn administrator left him there and got out on the last ambulance carrying people out. I wuda fucking quit right then and there. He dont sound to good on the radio  :(

Some not so great stories by now but my favorite was that they moved 3 dolphins from some sea land place to a Holiday Inn pool. How cruel can we get? All that chlorine and Holiday Inn breakfasts. They stuck some seals at a Ramada or some such. Great story. 8)

Edna, please call in or write in, as you are able... Safe wishes to you and your family...

The rain is still blowing horizontally, here. A massive tree in my backyard was blown down last night, and is now leaning at a crazy angle. As soon as the weather breaks, I've got a date with the chainsaw... *sigh* The storm is still raging, and no one seems to know what it's going to do. One weather service says that it's going to be out of here by noon. Another says it's supposed to worsen, today.... Right now, I'm just keeping a wary eye on things. No thunder, lightning, or hail, though. So far, so good...

They've declared Martial Law in New Orleans now... :(

They say the water is rising and they don't know why.  also, there's fires too that they can do nothing about.  Looks like it's much worse today than yesterday...

wow

Gulfport MS has something like 50 dead.  Man, talk about a town underwater. :o

Title: Re: Hurricane Katrina
Post by TxBasslady on Aug 30th, 2005, 11:26am
Well, I have worried so much.....but I realize there's nothing we can do right now. There is no power....no phones...not even cell phones are working except for sketchy areas.

Edna lives SW of N.O., close to the Gulf.    They are native to this area, and I have to believe they are ok.
Danny and Edna would never jeopardize their safety, or the safety of their kids.    They have family close by...and they will stick together.

I considered getting in my pick'em up truck and making the drive, however, I have not a clue how far I could go..before I was turned back.

I gave Jimbo the info he needed....and I trust him explicitly to do what he can.    His hands are full....and I realize that....but if he can help in any way, he will.

Svenn....I have to believe that Edna is ok.    She would call...if she could.   She will call....as soon as she can.    I am as worried as you are...and I promise you that as soon as possible (and if she hasn't called any of us) I will make the drive to Raceland to check on them.   Try not to worry too much...(I'm worrying enough for both of us...LMAO)

Info on Steve and Dianne is about the same as it is for Edna.   I doubt that Steve has been able to get to his home on the Northshore.    But again, I believe they are ok....and I know that Steve will post here as soon as he can.   I will continue to attempt to call...but we all know there's no phones working...and no power.   Steve lives on the Northshore (Lake Pontchartrain) close to La12.   Since the levee's have breached, and the water is backing up into the City of N.O., maybe Steve will be able to return home a bit sooner.

LOL...Edna will have a fit, when she sees how much we've worried    [smiley=huh.gif].    She'll laugh and say she can never get any peace or quiet time!

As Woobie says...."Peace Out"

Jean

I live about 5 hours from Edna...I can't get there.

I have checked every hwy, dirt road, and Interstate I could find.   All the roads are either under water or covered with debris.

Sheesh...the water is coming in from Lake Pontchartrain, and the Mighty Mississippi River....no tellin' when there'll be access.   I'll have to wait for the waters to receed.

Hopefully by then, we will have heard from Edna and Steve.   I would think once the water receed's, the phones may work again.   The cell phone towers are down...but surely we could get at least 1 call thru on a land line.

Shoulda bought an airplane instead of a pick up truck.. :-/

Prayers goin out to Edna, SteveG and their families.

Man tells of deaths at a flooded boarding house

Associated Press
Aug. 30, 2005 09:45 AM

NEW ORLEANS - Frank Mills was in a boarding house with three elderly residents when water started swirling up to the ceiling.

Mills, 56, made for the front door but an elderly man went to a bedroom to retrieve something, and a woman went to help him.

"And when I saw her in the hallway, she was floating face up," Mills told The Associated Press on Tuesday, adding that he never saw the other man again.
advertisement

Mills said he made it to a roof covering the front porch of the one-story house in the lower Ninth Ward section and tried desperately to pull another elderly man to safety. But he slipped away.

"He was kind of on the edge of the roof, catching his breath," Mills said. "Next thing I knew he came floating past me. ... I don't know if he drowned or had a heart attack."

Mills sat on the roof for about two hours before catching a floating compressor in the 20-foot-deep water and making his way to a two-story building nearby, where he was eventually picked up by a boat.

"I was next, that's what I was thinking," a barefoot Mills said as he stood in line at the Superdome with nothing but a ruined Walkman, a soaked cell phone and a bottle of water in a garbage bag.

https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp you can select hurricane relief as your option for where you want your money to go (or any other initiative.)

That's what happened in one of the others several years back....  I think that would be my worst nightmare.  I will always have at least 2-3 babies to take care of every time I work - and until they could get backups - well, if 2 are on vents or even any respiratory support requiring electricity, God help us all.   We can hold 46 babies in the NICU, and we are almost always at or close to capacity.  :'(

There was a made-for-tv movie on about this just this past spring - centered around the NICU.

I can't believe how much destruction Katrina has managed to do - even well after she left the area.   :'(

Prayers still going up for everyone.....

In a city that sits below sea level you would think they would have the backup generators on the roof instead of the second floor.

And, we can send shit to Mars but we cant make a vent that works on something the size of a car battery for 10 hours?

I guess finding your faults when the chips are down is the only way you learn.

Bummer!!

Latest, all shelters in New Orleans are being evacuated and the whoever is left will be evacuated.  Two levees have broken and the city is being flooded more.  They are now using Black Hawk helicopters to do search and rescue at night.  FEMA just said that this is the most significant natural disaster that has ever hit the US

I was working today and ran into this lady and her son.  She was telling me that she'd lived 40 year in Slidell and didn't really think she'd have a home to return to.  Her son told me that they had friends/family that refused to leave and didn't even know if they were still alive.

Just watched the news and Governor Blanco broke down right as she was finishing the interview.

Bad thing about this is, the worst is yet to come.

Post by Lizzie2 on Aug 30th, 2005, 6:25pm
That's the truth....

I'm just not even going to jump into a recent story on how we learned that our defibrillator is fairly crappy - and it's a good thing the baby was stable (well.....had a heart rate of about 250, but not knocking on death's door....).

I think what would freak me out even worse than having to 'bag' patients (or hand ventilate as you say) is that the monitors are out of commission.  I had to bag a baby (not even 2 pounds)  several times today because of desats and bradycardia - and much of that time was spent modifying how much pressure and the rate of breaths based on how he responded.  I was looking at him, the pressure guage, and the monitor in a cycle...the fact of the matter is, without the monitor, I'd have been without a major source of feedback on how effective the process was.  You'd pretty much have to have the stethoscope in your ears and just lying on them while still bagging just to hear the heart rate alone - but that doesn't even tell you everything - color is important, but how is that helpful when you can't see in the dark.  Just thinking about it makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Some building I went into recently had the right idea (err..the architects had the right idea, rather) - they had all  of their inner workings, generators, etc - on the 13th floor - which is generally a floor nobody wants to be on anyhow - and definitely high enough to be safe in a flood.

My house is in a little valley of sorts, and we lose power with a good gust of wind...I've scrambled to hook up the generator many times with my dad and other family - all the while someone has to scoop out the sump hole and run up the steps, dump out the water, and go back down.  The sump hole (which we created ourselves after having a BAD flood) fills up REALLY fast......so it's a mega race against the clock.  Katrina is headed our way tonight and tomorrow - and I know it's absolutely nothing compared to what they are all going through in the southern states, but the flooding will probably still cause some significant problems - it shuts down the railway systems, some highways, several roads, and floods out lots of places (a former junior high teacher's house split in half from the hurricane that hit Maryland to New York a few years ago)....so I imagine there's a pretty big risk of losing power tonight.

Thoughts and prayers....nonstop.   :'(

Carrie

Carolyn,

I really appreciate Jim doing what he can.   I think it's an awful lot to ask, under the circumstances.   It was really sweet of him to offer.

I wonder...if I could take I-49 to Lafayette, then head south on 90.   90 runs right into Raceland, just north of Houma.   According to LSP....these roads are not accessible.    I didn't ask them when they would be.   But surely, if I wait a day or 2, I should be able to make it.   It's like 35 miles or so from N.O. down to Raceland.  The only problem would be the water from Ponchatrain..if it floods below N.O., then I'd be back to square one.

I have seen no pictures of Houma....so I don't know what the situation is there.   I did hear that authorities have not been able to get to Grand Isle, and that is only about 30 or 40 miles SE from Raceland, (from what I can figure on the atlas) on Hwy 1.

Guess I'll continue to check the road accessibilities till I find a way.

Thanks Carolyn...to you and Jimbo for helping.

Much love,

Jean

didn't Edna have a place to go that was in the woods outside New Orleans? Seems like last time that's where they went. But she checked in from there.

But Jean you stay away from the coast -- there's too damn much water and too many people trying to get in right now. The news is awful today.

She did respond to an email of mine on saturday (only about my thoughts on Dallas) and said that her sister called and told her to start watching tv. Edna just said that she was mad and that they'd have to keep an eye on it.

This damn thing looks worse than Camille from 1969 which was a monster. I remember it. I was 23 at the time and my CH had just begun.  >:(

With the nearly 100/39 degree weather, they are worried about mosquito born disease. No pumps, and probably no way to boil water. CDC said to add a little bleach to every gallon. It should work.

WTF ARE YOU EDNA? http://www.subscribe.smileygenerator.us/all/albums/signs/missing.gif?SSImageQuality=Full

Jean don't you dare try to get there. All phone service is down. Today the Hammond shelter got one phone line going, and sporadic 800 mhz radio service on the state police towers that we work on. I have messages to a couple of good regional ems coordinators to call me. They are near New Orleans so their cells arent working. As soon as I hear from them I may be able to find out what EMS units are running in that area. I hope to be able to reach my counter part there tomorrow. There are a couple of parishes further east that there is almost no word out of, including their hospitals.
Sad to say, and all I will say is that now military triage is in effect. I am fine, havent been called down yet. I want to fucking go, I have done all I can in the shelter here, the special needs patients are in good hands, we dont have to many yet, not sure if they are going to bus them this far north or shut us down and send everyone south. there are several 250 bed mobile hospitals going up, some ours, some fed, some military, even one from North Carolina I think. Hopefully soon Blackhawk helicopters landing on elevated roadways and C-130's to move patients out of the area.
If you pray, do it, if you wish, do it.
Thank you all and I will let you know I i can get any info on Edna.
I need to be down there, dammit!

Not all phone lines are down.  I've talked to 3 of my sister in laws this evening.  One lives in Raceland right across the bayou from Edna and the other two in Houma.  I'm sure Edna's fine.  My sister in law said there was no flooding in Raceland.  I'll keep trying to call Edna.  The phone rings but I get no answer.  Maybe she only has a cordless phone or is with relatives.  I'll continue to pray until I talk to her but do feel that she is safe.  Take care everyone.  BarbaraG

How long you reckon it's been since a man told me what to do      [smiley=huh.gif]

Lemme tell ya what.....I'm gonna sit tight for a couple days...but when that water receeds, and when LSP gives me updated info on the hwy's, and the ok..I'm outta here.  Matter of fact, I'm going to the lakehouse on Thursday..that just puts me closer to where I need to go.

I won't do anything till I know I can get there....and get there safely.    Besides that, LSP isn't gonna let me go till it's safe.    So, that should make you feel better.

Barb, hope you find out about your family.   I have a good friend in Houma....I sure hope he's ok.

Now...don't get your panties and underwear in a knot, y'all.    When I go, you'll know!    But I have to say...the thought of them being there and maybe being hurt is more than I can bear.    What if...they didn't get out.   Edna answered an email on Sat....that means she was still at home.     You just don't know what this is doing to me...to be so damn close and yet I can't get there...I can't do anything.    :'(

I love you all...and I respect your concern...and I promise I won't go till it's safe.    But when it's safe, and if we haven't heard from them, I'm going.    That's the way it is.

So, light a candle....say a prayer...whatever it takes.

I do watch the news, on bbcworld and deutchewelle and Finnish channels, but I feel so helpless and sad... that makes me want to switch the TV off, but I don't. I complitely understand those people who don't watch TV news and rely entirely on newspapers.

SHARKS.....OMG 'what next' !!! I've watched several shows about N Orleans and how they are below sea level and how disastrous it would be to get a direct hit by a hurricane or whatever.......never quite understood why they are so low....and how the town all came about if it would naturally be under water ? Was it at one time then rebuilt and pumps installed ? I find it interesting but don't know alot obviously. Either way I have heard the damage is in comparason to a tsumami ? The news just gives me goosebumps when I see pics of all the damage and people......almost makes you freeze up in dispare. That's what it feels like to me. We got Katrina's left over rain last nite and I must admit it SCARED me......rained so hard so fast the ground all around the house was flooded up to the decks almost. That's about a foot !! Were in a RUN OFF area in a valley so it usually moves away quickly but we have to maintain our creeks along out back and along the house and keep an eye on things. I was outside late digging trenches in the rain with a hoe cuz of how it was standing and comeing up so fast. I was afraid it mite rain that hard all nite.....I just can't imagine what THOSE people went thru tho !!! At least I was able to do something to devert some of the water and worked in the creek a few days to make sure rock was in place along the banks and no jams and block and cement chunks still in place to protect it. (creek has about 5 to 6 foot banks along the house standing looking down off level land). So anyone else in the path expecting rain be sure ya have things in order to handle it !!! Still rainin a steady rain rite now but nothing too bad and should clear out soon. Reciever beware Pam

Be safe all........take care..................(edit cuz my spelling sucks......but.......so what.....it's the point and thoughts behind it that count)

Thanks for these links....I have posted on the forum for the Parish that Edna lives in.   Looks like folks are answering pretty fast.    Unbelieveable as to the help these folks are.   Most have traveled this area right up to today.

I'll post here as soon as I hear something.   There are folks in the area who are doing nothing but checking on families for folks who have posted.

BTW...from what I read....it looks as though all roads are clear for entry.    Problem area is Grand Isle.

I will write a $500 check for more bullets as soon as the first National Guardsman puts a bullet in a fucking looter!

I may be wrong jonny, but I think that what people may have seen is the cops helping the looters carry food and water to other parts of the city that had nothing.  The looters aren't their biggest concern now, getting people out is.

Well, listening to three different talk shows the story is the same about a cop pushing a cart with a compaq computer and a 27" TV.....and they all said that this cop is on video.

Is it true?....dont know, but we will, if it is.

I registered today on the WWLTV site in order to find any information I can about Edna's home town.    Some parts of Raceland have power.   Cell phones are about non-existent.

Here is the response I received from a lady who lives in the vicinity of Danny & Edna:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Raceland made it through the storm really pretty well. Aside from downed trees and powerlines, the damage is minimal. There are of course some exceptions, because a few buildings have lost roofs or parts of roofs but in most cases it's just lost shingles. Roads from Raceland to Thibodeaux are opened and in fact I drove that route today myself. Fuel is being sold at several different stations although long lines should be expected because not all stations have generators for power. I'm sorry I don't know about your friends Danny and Edna but if you call try using a hard line to a hard line. Cell phones are overwelmed right now and it's rare to get a line. Good Luck,...Bayougirl.

Things are lookin' better and better to me.   It could be that Danny & Edna are not at their home.    However, they can return if they're not already there.

I will continue to check for any updates...more than likely, if none of us hear from Edna by Friday or Saturday, I am going to drive over to Raceland, and check on them.

I am calling continuously.....land line, and cell.   Alot of folks can't call out, but can receive calls.

I am also checking on SteveG's Parish.    Appears there's no flooding there, but fallen trees.   I have been unable to reach him, but will continue to call.

I don't know about the firemen, but I saw the cops on TV.  They were pushing a card loaded with electronics, and the commentator inferred that they were looting just like the rest of the people.  I would like to think that that card of goodies was just something that they had confiscated from a looter, but I sure didn't get that impression.

I agree with Jonny, shoot the guy carrying the TV, but let the guy carrying the food, clothing, medication (you don't know if he's taking it because its needed for his family, or because he just needs his fix - in either case, let him go, diapers, baby food, water, Pepsi, etc.  go.

Matt,

I asked Edna if she needed anything.   She said they were just fine.   I know she's due for her CH cycle, and asked if she needed any meds, and she said she thinks she has enough.   I know she uses Imitrex.

She promised to let me know if the situation changes.

To hear her voice....was the greatest thing.

You can bet, if she needs anything....I'll let the family know.

Thanks again Jean for tracking down Edna.
I have some friends down in New Orleans that I am worried about, especially my buddy Marty who is just crazy enough to try and brave the storm. I am very worried he may have wound up in the attic of his house. His dad has stage 2 cancer (was diagnosed 2 months ago.)

I've made some friends in NOLA over the past couple of years, and have even been considering moving there when finances allow - but it looks like THAT isn't gonna happen. Watching all of the news reports the last couple of days has been so surreal, like I told my friend Michelle, This could have been a much worse disaster had there been no warning at all like the Tsunami last year.
I'm still waiting to get into my new apartment, but the housing authority is still waiting for landlord confirmation. If I hear nothing by next Wednesday, I may be jumping on a bus with a church group of volunteers to help with the relief efforts. I told Michelle that I don't have money to donate, but I have plenty of time.

Been praying for all of the families affected by Hurricane Katrina. I had to stop watching the reports for awhile because instead of the situation getting better it seems something even more unbelievable happens. For instance, earlier today they suspended evacuation efforts when somebody opened fire on one of the buses.

WTF is wrong with people? Aren't these people suffering enough without having to be traumatized further by random acts of senselessness.        >:(
