Title: Beautiful Patriotic Lyrics
Post by Lizzie2 on Aug 25th, 2005, 1:48am
So I was trying to sleep and was listening to CMT on tv....the country music channel.  It relaxes me and reminds me of some of the more happier times I had in junior high/high school for various reasons.  Kinda like being 'home' in a way.

I was also listening to the news radio on the way home from work today, and I heard of President Bush's visit to Idaho to speak to families of the National Guard.  Seems Cindy Sheehan really has stirred quite a controversy - and I wholeheartedly agree with what Ree wrote in a post about Cindy Sheehan's son volunteering to fight for our country and that Ms. Sheehan is dishonoring his memory by her current actions - whether they be motivated by grief, anger, or all of the above....

I heard a bit of what Dubya said out in Idaho today - and something really struck a chord.  He spoke of a family (forgive my spelling) named the Pruitts.  (I'm sure I butchered that - but I only heard it - didn't see it in print.)  He received a letter from the mom in that family - a beautiful letter of support for her 5 children and her husband - all who have served in Iraq.  One of her children and her husband are home now, but the rest are still there.  I'm sorry if I don't get her statements completely on key,  but I think she said something about how if any of her family died over there, she knew they were leaving this world the way they would have wanted to - by defending our nation.  (That was the sentiment, at least!)

It really pulled at my heart - and I was also thinking about all of the posts here about the war in Iraq.  Also about Ree's sons overseas and all of those here who have known or lost loved ones in Iraq and other battles fighting to protect our freedom.  I'm so proud of all our troops.  The story of this family that had 6 members fighting the war in Iraq - we just have to be so thankful for people like them.  I can't imagine the wracked nerves and worrying that must go on, but the pride runs deep - and their spirit really does show the backing that we should be giving our troops - no matter what our feelings about the war itself.  I know I was never a fan of the war in Iraq, and now I don't even follow the technical aspects of the war and related issues - but I have and always will support our troops with all I've got.

Anyways what got me thinking about this was that I heard a song on CMT called Arlington and sung by Trace Adkins. Just had to share it with you all here - because I know this is an issue that we all hold strong opinions about.  I really thought the song was beautiful.  Here it is!

Arlington:
Trace Adkins.

I never thought that this is where I'd settle down.
I thought I'd die an old man back in my hometown.
They gave me this plot of land,
Me and some other men, for a job well done.

There's a big White House sits on a hill just up the road.
The man inside, he cried the day they brought me home.
They folded up a flag and told my Mom and Dad:
"We're proud of your son."

And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done.
I can rest in peace;
I'm one of the chosen ones:
I made it to Arlington.

I remember Daddy brought me here when I was eight.
We searched all day to find out where my grand-dad lay.
And when we finally found that cross,
He said: "Son, this is what it cost to keep us free."

Now here I am, a thousand stones away from him.
He recognized me on the first day I came in.
And it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels,
And saluted me.

And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done.
I can rest in peace;
I'm one of the chosen ones:
I made it to Arlington.

And everytime I hear twenty-one guns,
I know they brought another hero home to us.

And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
We're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done.
We can rest in peace;
'Cause we are the chosen ones:
We made it to Arlington.

Yeah, dust to dust,
Don't cry for us:
We made it to Arlington.

"They shall grow not old, as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. Lest we forget."

Australia's 'Ode to the Fallen', recited each evening in our memorial clubs in respect of those who made the ultimate sacrifice that we remain free.

From a poem by an English author and may he rest in peace.

Reminds me of a poem that I/we had to learn as kids in grammar school.  Coincidence that 90 years later the sentiment remains the same?

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

More people should think like you, Carrie.....and the Cindy's of the world should STFU and let our troops do what they do without worrying about support for them.

This is what they do and they do it better than anyone on earth.

How anyone can think that the troops wont be affected by news of the Cindy's is beyond me.

I agree, we should all support the troops with all we got. I have had many friends and family that have defended our country, we owe them much. Here is an email I recieved from a recently retired police officer I know.

We rarely get a chance to see another country's editorial about
theUSA.

Read this excerpt from a Romanian Newspaper. The article was
written by Mr. Cornel Nistorescu and published under the title
"C"ntarea Americii, meaning "Ode To America") in the Romanian
newspaper Evenimentulzilei

"The Daily Event" or "News of the Day".
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

~An Ode toAmerica~

Why are Americans so united? They would not resemble one another
even if you painted them all one color! They speak all the
languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of
civilizations and religious beliefs. Still, the American tragedy
turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart.

Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, and the secret
services that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to
empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed out onto the streets
nearby to gape about. The Americans volunteered to donate blood and
to give a helping hand.

After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the
smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of
the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in
every place and on every car a government official or the president
was passing.

On every occasion, they started singing their traditional song:
"God Bless America!" I watched the live broadcast and rerun after
rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one
hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she
was, or of the Californian hockey player, who gave his life
fighting with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a
target that could have killed other hundreds or thousands of
people.

How on earth were they able to respond united as one human being?
Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some
turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone
call, millions and millions of dollars were put in a collection
aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit, which no
money can buy.

What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way? Their land?
Their galloping history? Their economic Power? Money? I tried for
hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases with
the risk of sounding commonplace.

I thought things over, but I reached only one conclusion... Only
freedom can work such miracles.

Cornel Nistorescu

(This deserves to be passed around the internet forever.)

Freedom is something that we often find as common place, I know freedom is not free. I am sure that Mr. Nistorescu can tell you what it is like not to be free.

Thanks to the troops and God bless America.

It seems most of you still only listen to propaganda machines.
First, i have never heard anyone even hint that they dont support the troops.  No one has said they wish bad things to happen to our boys.  People question the Commander's decisions.  Just cause i would have preferred to go fuck up some terrorists as opposed to fuck up a country that was not even in the top 10 most dangerous, doesnt mean i dont support the troops.  (Notice, in that sentence, i never even mentioned the word 'troops'.)  Everyone supports the troops.  They volunteered to protect our country.  If you think that people that wanted to invade a real threat instead of a minute threat dont support the troops, you have been brainwashed and propagandized.
Second, I dont really watch news, but i do know that cindy sheehan never said she wants the troops to come home immediately.  She has 1 question she wants to ask Bush: "what was the noble cause my son died for?"  She wants to ask that quesiton to bush, of course, she isnt expecting anything more than the usual" freedom isnt free", and "he died for freedom", and "freedom is on the march", and "the world is a better place without saddam"......all the tired ol cliches he has been repeating for years now.
Cindy has never said the troops are bad, she never said what they are doing is bad.  She wants to ask the president "what is the noble cause my son died for?"

Everybody, all together now " he died for freedom".

BMonee

PS, remember that woman at the state of the onion address from iraq that had the ink on her finger cause she voted? she is now the Iraqi ambassador to egypt.  I heard her speak today, she said that people, women specifically, have less rights now than they had 5 years ago, and she also said that if the iraqi constitution gets approved the way it is now in draft form, women will have even less rights freedom.
If freedom is on the march, where the fuck is it going to?

I just don't think some people "get" it.  And I don't think they ever will.

Let me put this simply.  We are over there.  We can't back out right now.  What the troops NEED, is our support.  ALL of our support.  What they DON'T need, is a divided country bitching back and forth about who was right and who was wrong.  They need all of us behind them so they can complete their mission with the knowledge that what they're doing, matters.

Wonder if they "get it" now?

I wish people would just let it GO.  Our government fucked up (gee, like THAT'S never happened before ::)), but if we all keep at each others throats with a "you're wrong and I'm right" attitude, you can sure as hell expect a whole lot fucking more body bags!!! >:(

Oh, and BTW, I sure as hell hope that there will be a better turn out for the 2006 voting!  THAT is what's important.  Not only that, at least we have 2008.

BUT, I'm not holding my breath, because it seems that any politician that achieves a status higher than a Governer, has already gone to hell in a handbasket. :P

Melissa, i think you are right.  Enough of this error is enough.
Bush suceeded in diverting attention from the war on terror to the war in Iraq.  I agree, we have to stay the course now, cause we broke it.  I have no problem in staying the course.
I think you are right, seems most people dont 'get it'.  We got attacked by osama bin laden and saudi terrorists.  We did not get attacked by Iraq.  Yes, trying to spread peace and democracy is important, but leveling saudi arabia and not resting for 1 second until we find bin laden and kill him are the most important things we should be doing.  During peace time, yes, we can be humanitarians and do good things, but we are not at peace.  we have an enemy that attacked us brutally, and we need to retaliate against those (saudi) fuckers, and also send a message to the rest of the world that if you fuck with the USA, you will be sorry.
That is what people dont get.  For some reason, bush has brainwashed people into thinking helping out our good buddies in iraq be free from tyranny is more important than defending the USA.
"get it" now?

  :'(     :'(      :'(   SAD BUT PROUD.......

I will NEVER forget the first time I heard the song Arlington.MY Sister Cindy,NieceChristine, her friend Andrea and I were on our way to fort bragg in July .It came on the radio and the silence was deafening. We were on our way to a memorial service were a plaque was being dedicated at the airbourne museum.Being honored for their ultimate sacrifice for their country was .Sgt. Christopher M. Pusateri, 21, of Corning, N.Y., died Feb.16 in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries sustained from enemy forces using small arms fire. Pusateri was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
Christopher is  My Nephew (in-law) and Staff Sgt. Zachary R. Wobler, 24, of Ottowa, Ohio, died Feb. 6 in Mosul, Iraq.P.S. If you go to Fayetteville  North Carolina check out the museum it's amazing .It also has a walk made of bricks with the name ,rank and I believe Date of death of all the airbourne who  were KIA.

We stayed in the same family home as Zachary's family shared a kitchen and living room. His mom told me they had heard of christophers death at her sons funeral.he died 2 weeks before Christopher( the same area in Iraq). Her son was buried in Arlington as he had requsted.I told her of the song and she planned on buying the cd to have the song. All I will say is GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMIlies.I know I mention christopher and Christine alot but he was too young to die 21and she's too young to be a widow at 20.This is what  it's about to me.Not some political bullsh it.real lives, real families men and women doing a damn fine job protecting our country and following orders.I do believe that most people support our troops wether they believe in the reasonning behind it or not.
     Minnie
BTW Two battalions from the 82nd Airborne Division will be going to Iraq before October I'm  not sure which two but I hope they all return home safe and sound. We've gotten to know many of them and dread the wait until we hear their all safe and sound..............ADDED LINK>>>>>

"a divided country bitching back and forth about who was right and who was wrong"

The "bitching back and forth" is the cornerstone of our democratic system.  Without it, our leaders would be able to engage in any sort of military adventures that they want to and that would lead to tyranny and brave military members dying needlessly.  As BMonee said, everyone here supports the troops, but that is not the same as blind obedience to an administration that is the most power hungry that I have ever seen in my lifetime; and yes, I have served in the military and have blood on my hands and PTSD because of it.  I don't want anyone to have to suffer the after effects of combat needlessly.

BMonee, you ask me why?  Because for the life of me, I cannot understand why you feel the need to trash a supportive thread with your hatred of Bush, when the thread has no political tone to it.

THAT is what I just DON'T FUCKING GET!!!

as for you CHTom, read what I wrote above AND, where does it help the men and women who are over there right now??  Don't you think that the people who are blowing our kids up don't see the media showing day in and day out the way our country is divided??  How people are at each others throats on TV...  YES, TV, Media, THAT is what they watch.  They don't see others of us having calm, rational discussions, respecting each others opinions and compromising on issues.  They see the damned media!  I just don't see how it "helps" anything.  It doesn't mean you gotta be quiet, it just means that those who protest the war, need to go about it a different way than they did in the 70's.  As for you serving in the armed forces... Thank You.

Melissa, you must not have read the original post from lizzie.  She talks at length about the iraq war and the soldiers in it, and the sheehan issue, and 'dubya'.  Sorry if me also responding to her thread is in some way confusing you.
You asked me if i had family in the military.  You asked me that cause I disagree with Bush's policy to deter attention away from terrorists and draw it to Iraq?

Did you have any family die on 9/11?  Did you have any friends die?  Did you ever live in new york city, 2 blocks south of the WTC, did you walk past the WTC every day?

and by the way, melissa, it is ironically weird that when i say i sure wish we fucked up a lot of terrorists, you call me a bush hater.

Isnt that weird, that you wrap yourself in the flag and wear your patriotism on your shirt-sleeve, but when i say i wish that we didnt rest for 1 second and spend every available resource until osama bin laden is dead......you say that i hate president bush?

Its so ironic, yet so sad, i dont know whether i should laugh or cry.

No, that's not confusing me.  In no way did Carrie mention anything about the war being right or wrong, she only talked about support of the troops.

And no, I didn't ask you that because you disagree with Bush's policies, I asked you that because I see you are having a problem separating your support for the troops from your disdain for our current governmental policies.

Melissa,
I KNOW that i explicitly said that i, and everyone else supports the troops.  It was explicitly and plainly stated in laymans terms.
Its not me that has a problem separating my support for the troops from my disgust at this administrations refusal to go after terrorists.  Its you that has a problem separating your mind from the propaganda you listen to from hush bimbo and sean vanity.
The last question i asked you was in response to your question.  You asked me if i had any family in the military as if to imply that if you do have family in the military, you must support Bush.  I asked you if you have any family or friends that died on 9/11 as if to imply that your removal from the terrorists acts as a buffer to your feelings.  I guarantee you, if you had friends and family that died on Sept 11, you would not let the war on terror get so far down on the priority list.
If you had friends and family die on 9/11, you would not call an american a bush hater for saying that he wants to spend every resource available and not rest for 1 second until we kill bin laden.  No, i dont want him sitting in a jail cell waiting to stand trial, i want him dead.....you should too.

Thanks T,

BMonee- We actually did have 2 family friends die in 9/11....and know what? I don't particularly like Bush.  So one has nothing to do with the other.  I have not been a fan of the war in Iraq - but I will support our troops without fail.  And no, not everyone sees it that way.  I don't fall prey to propaganda in the media - I'd like to think I have the clarity to see past that...  So please, don't terrorize our thread - if you don't like it, no need to post to it.  Simple as that.  My original post had nothing to do with politics at all.  If I'm speaking in political terms, it resembles much more of things that Charlie and Floridian say....I think you'd know it if I was.

Yeah I tried hard to refrain from making a political statement - but then I felt I had to make a statement as to why I wasn't making a political statement in the first place!   [smiley=ohjez.gif]

I can argue politics with the best of 'em, but those of you who know me, know that wasn't my point here! :)

You suffer from the same thing I do.  Every one misunderstands you, as they do me.  If every one understood me, I would be wealthy, healthy and surrounded by bunnies (not the ones with big ears either).  But the problem is my intelect is above most people's that I come into contact with, and therefore all of my thoughts and opinions are wasted as they go in one ear and out of the opposite one of my audiences.  Oh the humanity!

Add people?  add whom?
I was just referring to the derogatory statement i made toward you, and the immediate whimpering and crying phone call to DJ.  We've all seen it.
BMonee

I didnt know you had videophone.  That is a screenshot of your conversation with DJ?

Of course you can, i am sure he will get a good chuckle.

This thread has totally gone off topic, now we arent talking about song lyrics or anything on the whole first page.
To be fair to lizzie and everyone else, jonny, if you wanna get bitch slapped over on a new thread, we should do that.
