Title: Maxalt Related Heart Attack
Post by maryB on Aug 24th, 2005, 10:55pm
Hi there,
I recently was hospitalized with a heart attack that the doctors have identified as potentially Maxalt related - my heart muscle constricted. I don't smoke or do drugs and have no history myself of heart problems although there is a history of stroke on my father's side. Thus, the Maxalt question.
I am wondering if anyone has heard of these drugs spurring an actual heart attack  or serious chest pains where there is no history.
Thanks in advance,
Mary

Yes, that is a concern with all triptans.  The rate is 'low' for people who do not have obvious risk factors, but it is there.  The triptans are powerful vasoconstrictors.

Triptans...mainly Imitrex....have always made me feel as if I was having a Heart Attack. Once or twice it sent me to the Hospital, where I had tyo undergo 2 days of torture tests. Nuclear Stress Tests, Echo's, and finally a cardiac catherization. :o

Thankfully, they found nothing wrong... but I cannot take Imitrex or other triptans...nor would I want to.

Jimmy
