I did not know that... :-[ Anyway, I think it is just beautiful writing, and I've decided to use it, instead of Sanskrit, for the names I'm going to have tattooed. How though, would I write these names?? Jesse Lily Elijah Doesn't Hebrew not have any vowels? |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by Melissa on Aug 25th, 2005, 12:18am Thx Eric. I tried Lily, and it gave me these Hebrew names: 1 chavatzelet 2 nitza 3 shoshan 4 shoshana I don't understand, which one would I use? :-/ I need to have Lily's name on there, of course. Perhaps I'll just use the translations you did for me. Would this be right?... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/mfiltz/namesinhebrew.jpg It's a crude cut and paste job, and I would have Hoss (my tat guy) write the letters closer together, but I just want to get it right. TY so much for being so patient with me! :) |

Jesse is correct. You can't go wrong because it is spelled the same way regardless ;;D Elijah and Lily both need to be reversed. The way you spelled it would be comparable to this: Hajile and Ylil Take the letters and just flip it. Then you are correct. Start Right >>>>>>Left Hope this was clear. |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by Lizzie2 on Aug 25th, 2005, 9:20am Ex2 -- Did you ever read the book "Israel is 40"? Or rather....it's not a book to read really - it's a Hebrew songbook. That's the first one I was taught to read and was always amused that the cover was on the 'back' so to speak! So then because my aunt and uncle were responsible for my Hebrew education - I used to write them letters in English - but from right to left. Don't ask me why - I probably found it amusing! Never really did get very far with the learning Hebrew bit! I always wished I'd had, but I think I was too young to concentrate on it much! LOL Ex2 :) |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by Frank_W on Aug 25th, 2005, 9:41am E-dub, did you see the movie, "Pi"? I thought the mathematical patterns in Hebrew were fascinating... I don't know enough about it to know if what they were talking about is accurate or not, but if it is, it's very compelling. -Frank |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by clarence on Aug 25th, 2005, 11:00pm E - I didn't know that you were the token Jew! I learned Hebrew in Seminary (reading knowledge anyway), and I love it. I loved it more that Greek for sure. But, I haven't kept up on it like I should. Shalom, Casey |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by clarence on Aug 26th, 2005, 12:35pm I was talking to a student at the college today who studies Hebrew Bible, and she make the suggestion that you could do the Hebrew word of Lily, as in the flower. Transliterated it would be: shoshan. I can probably do the Hebrew if you are interested. Also, you can download a Hebrew font here: http://bibleworks.com/fonts.html Casey |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by broomhilda on Aug 26th, 2005, 12:53pm Mel, its going to be beautiful!!!I can't wait to see pics, where and when? ;;D One thing to bear in mind as I was researching doing my son's name is beware of the sites that claim translation, I went to a Chinese co-worker and had him translate and write Jonahs name for me as many sites are incorrect. If you can go to a source who can do it for you otherwise, you could be "lost in tanslation" :D Signed another tattooed token Jew ;;D |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by Melissa on Aug 26th, 2005, 1:13pm :) Thanks so much everyone! Casey- That must be where the "shoshan" came from when I tried to translate her name on the website Eric gave me. What do you mean by "do the Hebrew"? Do you mean draw it onto paper and then scan it for me? If so, that would be so AWESOME! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Coots- At the moment, I am waiting to hear back from Ramon to see if he can draw me a cross that I want. I'd like it to be in shades of green with a white/silver "roping" in the center. I sketched out onto paper what I want, but it looks silly, LOL. The names I will be putting beneath the cross. I thought about having them on my chest, or beneath my tiger, but decided that beneath the cross seems to just "fit". :) Andrea- Thank you so much hon! :-* As for getting it right, that's why I'm asking for advice. I want to get as much info. down of the accurate writing as possible. This will be on me for life, so I better not fuck it up! ;;D You guys are great! :) |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by E-Double on Aug 26th, 2005, 1:25pm I think Casey meant if you are doing all Hebrew names then do Lily in the Hebrew version. I would stick to Lily just transliterated into Hebrew letters. Jesse & Elijah are both Hebrew names while Lily is Latin I think. That would be like calling me Enrique just because my spanish teacher decided that was the closest. How do you want them designed? Are you going to incorporate them into your other tat or around it? I'd love to dabble with th caligraphy. Gonna do it anyway just for fun :) |
||
Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by Melissa on Aug 26th, 2005, 1:41pm Eric, ok, gotcha. ;) As for the font design, the fancier the better. Whatever the fanciest Hebrew writing is, is cool by me. I love caligraphy myself, used to have my own set. ;;D Anyway, the names will be by themselves, not incorporated into anything. Sorta floating there together, with Jesse's name on top, Lily's beneath, and then Elijah's on the bottom, all of them centered. :) |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by clarence on Aug 26th, 2005, 2:13pm um, no... I can't actually draw it up. I meant that I could post what it would look like here. I am incredibly artistically challenged, though if I could do it for ya I would. Eric has a point about the transliteration. It might seem out of place. I only thought that Since Jesse and Elijah were both Hebrew, then the word for lily (the flower) in Hebrew would make a third Hebrew word. It wouldn't sound "Lily," but it would mean lily. But Eric's Spanish Teacher analogy makes sense. I am anxious to see how it turns out! Casey |

Title: Re: O/T, need help finding good web site... Post by Melissa on Aug 26th, 2005, 4:55pm Casey, I'm a moron, ignore me, LOL. [smiley=laugh.gif] There is a month long waiting list to get in for an appt. with my tat guy, so as soon as I have some artwork to give him, I'll make one. I'll definately put pics up after it's done! :):):)melly |
