The guy was brilliant and revolutionized the keyboard. Also, the Theremin was a strange new instrument responsible for that eerie sound heard in alot of early horror movies, and even cartoons like Scooby Doo.
An old lead singer had one and I learned how to play it. Definitely a wild instrument. Some funky noises can be made with it.

My favorite group (Moody Blues) was also one of the first groups to use his synthesizer. It totally changed the direction of early rock. I loved the scope of sounds it produced in the right hands. ;;D

Theremin invented the Theremin... (go figure!)
Moog made them and invented the Moog synthesizer, but he didn't invent the Theremin...

That sucks. Moog synths and the Theramin were staples for a lot of bands in the 70s and 80s.

Want to hear some cool theramin stuff. Watch or listen to 'Whole Lot Of Love' off of 'The Song Remains The Same'. During that long instrumental part in the middle, Jimmy Page plays around with a theramin.

Moog synths were used a lot by Rush also. Geddy Lee used to use a foot controled Moog synth when playing live so he could either play bass with his feet while playing keys with his hands or get synthesized effects using his feet while playing the bass.

Actually Bob Moog didn't invent the theremin, it was invented by a russian named Lev Sergeivitch Termen in 1919. Then some french dude Leon Theremin made it popular. Bob Moog redesigned the thing and made it famous!

My info shows it was invented by Leon Theremin at the University of Petrograd in 1920 when he was 21 years old. Went to New York in 1927, set up his own studio, and became the darling of the Mahattan set.

In 1938, in front of his wife, he was brutally kidnapped by the NKVD (forerunner to the KGB) repatriated to Russia and sent to a labour camp in Siberia. His wife believed he'd been murdered but in fact he was forced to work for Russian intelligence inventing surveillance devices.

He also invented a dance platform that emitted pitches according to the dancer's steps. He was eventually allowed to return to lecture in the USA in 1991 and died in 1993.

One of the first bands in the 60's to get the Moog Synthesizer was the Monkees. I know what you're thinking... The Monkees?

Believe it or snot, though they were a manufactured band, after the 2nd album (more of the Monkees) they gave Don Kirshner the axe and took creative control of their music. "Headquarters" was the first real Monkees album and then the follow-up "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones, LTD" was a fantastic album with alot of psychedelia influence. The song "Daily Nightly" was mostly Mickey Dolenz experimenting with the Moog Synth. I still love that song!

I love that song too, Carl. And I liked the Monkees. :) Good, fun music. I grew up with The Monkees, the Beach Boys, Elvis, the Righteous Brothers, Carly Simon, Santana, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, the American Grafitti Soundtrack, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, and James Taylor. :)
