Title: Story behind my user name
Post by mcf69 on Aug 22nd, 2005, 12:48am
Everytime I post in a forum with a user name containing the number 69, people wonder what it's connotation is, so heres the story behind it.  I'm a volunteer firefighter/emt, the mcf is the initials of the department I belong to, thats the boring part.  When you first join, you are assigned an identification number and a set of tags with that number on them, 69 just happened to be the first set of matching tags that they pulled from a box.  One tag goes on a board inside the first engine at a fire so the person in charge knows you're there.  The second is left at the door with a safety officer so they know if you're in the building if things go to hell and they need to figure out who's out and who's not.
I've always imagined a scenario that goes like this:  I'm in a burning building and suddenly the whole place collapses, I'm the only one who doesn't make it out.  The safety officer goes to the chief and hands him my tag, telling him everyone made it out except 69.  The chief gets a panicked look on his face and says, "69, oh no, not 69, what are we going to do without 69, I can't live without 69!!!!!!!"  Someone speaks up and says, "chief, 69 is Ben"  The chief immediately calms down and says, "oh, yeah.....Ben (tossing the tag over his shoulder), well, lets go back to the station and order pizza"
So thats the story behind the number for all those wondering what it means, I know it's boring, but hey, some of you were probably thinking something else  ;)

I've often wondered about the meaning/reason/cause of some of the names used here. Probably some stories we really don't want to hear.
Yesterday we had a dukfoot enter the site.

dukfoot???????? [smiley=laugh.gif]

I was just getting ready to post on the meds board and noticed that it would have been my 69th post on the new board, so I figured it would be a good post to tell the story.....

Here in Oz we tend to refer to Harleys as kelpies, a variety of sheep and cattle dog.

That's 'cos they spend so much time in the back of the truck.

NO MATTERA what kind of bike ya ride........you'll never get a better feeling then a Harley between yer legs.......with all problems and vibrations and noise aside......that IS a proven fact. Brad keeps our old ones maintained cuz he is a mechanic and a blacksmith....so he can make what he breaks in some degree or figure out how to fix it himself. Has a freind do summa the motor work (machine work)....both ours are stroked out and got hidden power. Sleeping giantes Pam

Kelpies......sounds like somethin ya use to catch big fish....... ;;D

Enjoy yer 'Hardly Davidson's'.......bikes are bikes.....jus be safe at it !!!!

Harley died, went to heaven, and introduced himself as "The name's Harley, and I pretty murch invented the American motor cycle!"

"Very nice", said God. "I pretty much invented the American woman."

"Good design concept, God. Good design concept, but you put the ridin' position too close to the exhaust!"

"Really?" replied God, "Still, there's more people riding my model than ride yours."

Yay for firefighters!!  I drove past 5 firetrucks tonight outside a Strawbridge and Clothier's in Suburban Square in Ardmore.  They were all moving quickly and pulling out the gear - honestly I didn't see any smoke and couldn't figure out what was going on, but it looked like it must've been big!  I think almost all ladders and engines from the eastern Main Line were on the scene!

Our local ambulance station is 87 - that's a big hit with Diane.  She wants to be a flight nurse.  I think that would be an awesome job....but it looks like if I get my NNP, then I can go along on neonatal flight transports!  Diane is going to get certified to be a nurse with the fire company, too - she is totally an EMS junky - bet you are too!  I was definitely an ER junky when I worked there.  It takes a different kind of breed to have those jobs.  ;)

My screenname was originally chronic_chic, but I didn't have chronic CH then...actually didn't have CH for very long at all...and didn't even know if it was CH at first - I really had a lot to learn...as most of us did in the beginning!  So the chronic part came from the endless chronic daily headache I have - and chronicchic was a nickname I used for the about.com headache site, so I figured I'd keep it the same!  I'd first used Lizzie in chat, but people kept thinking I was AlienSpaceBabe Lizzie.....so that's how I became Lizzie2. :)  Lizzibeth is what my dad calls me, and I always liked the name Lizzie better than the name Carrie.  So that's the story behind my user name!

We have to share more EMS stories - there's a few of us here who are really obsessed with the emergency medicine side of life.  (Where's Roger when ya need him?)  Frank has quite a few stories from the Army Medic days as well!

Carrie :)

I think being a flight nurse would be the ultimate nursing job.  I've been thinking of going for my Paramedic just so I have the certification when I get my RN, it definately helps if you want to go into a critical care field like emergency transports.

After six years of trauma medicine, I'm sick of sick people, sick of flying on helicopters, sick of being awakened in the middle of the night to fly a medevac mission, and sick of mass-casualty drills (and the real thing, as well).

Man, I know about burnout Frank, I've seen alot of good people who just couldn't/didn't want to do it anymore.  About 5 years seems to be the magic number. I guess I've made it over that point, although I don't have much tollerance for the BS stuff, and out the 1200 calls a year we run, 90% of them are.

I think the medic job is an awesone job......but I also think it is stressful and can see how someone mite get burnout on seein so much bad stuff and grief and pain. Do most people in that line of work only do it so long......or do sum stay with it many years ? Just curious. I think the people that do that job are medic angels.......thanks to all or any here that have or are into that now.  Tryin to keep it safe Pam

Thanks... :) I'm happy now, with a nice little 7-4 job, where no one's life is on the line. If I were to choose a different profession, I might consider law enforcement... I like to help people, but yeah, I'm burned-out. The call that finally let me know that it was time to quit, was in Yokosuka Naval Base. The USS Midway was in port and caught fire. We were called on to medevac 17 horribly burned sailors. We had to land, descend into the hold, and get those guys out of there. That whole day was hellish and I will never forget it.

The "magic number" in the fire service seems to be about 5 years before it really starts to get on the nerves of most, especially if you've seen some bad stuff, and even more so for those who start doing it while young.  I started when I was 20 and have been doing it for 10 years now, and I've seen some bad stuff, everything from burned bodies found in fires to the gorriest car accidents you can imagine, but I still love it and wouldn't give up any of the experiences I've had for anything, I guess it just makes you appreciate life more.

After 8 years of doing Law Enforcement for a living, I did get burned out on that, dealing with idiots constantly kind of got on my nerves, thats why I'm going to be a nurse, still helping people, just in a different way.

Been there done that Frank and know where you're coming from brother.  Just remember all the people you've helped, the difference you've made in their lives and the appreciation they have for you, hold your head high and know you did good!
