Title: Re: Look what's headed this way-again.. Post by Bob P on Aug 19th, 2005, 10:06am When I was in Navy "A" school at Great Lakes Naval Station I had to stand tornado watch one stormy night. Rain pelting down, wind howling and me walking around the outside of the buildings in my foul weather gear and a flashlight. I wouldn't have been able to see a tornado if it was 10 feet in front of me! Sometimes ya gotta wonder. |

Title: Re: Look what's headed this way-again.. Post by pattik on Aug 19th, 2005, 10:09am It's a good thing you didn't see one. If you had been within 10 feet, you probably would have ended up in Gary, IN. ;) |

Title: Re: Look what's headed this way-again.. Post by LadyElaine on Aug 19th, 2005, 10:29am LOL Bob ! That hit me so funny! Tears rolling side hurting. We been having bad thunder storms here at night the last couple of weeks. Its been fun. My dog is scard to death of them. If we are asleep she wakes me up, panting walking all over my head. I have to get up with her, hold her close and cover her eyes with my hands so she can't see the lighting. She goes nuts. My house has windows everywhere. Five in the kitchen and one great big one in the den . Two in all the other rooms. I was so tired last night I tried night before last I tried something new. It worked. I took her and got in the walk in closet . I fell asleep in there. Made for a scary moring for Buddy. He couldn't find me when he got up ! ;;D |

Title: Re: Look what's headed this way-again.. Post by Karla on Aug 19th, 2005, 11:03am Wisconsin tornado kills one Friday, August 19, 2005; Posted: 9:26 a.m. EDT (13:26 GMT) | What Is This? STOUGHTON, Wisconsin (AP) -- The sky "just exploded" as a tornado damaged or destroyed dozens of homes, killing one person, a witness said. Authorities did not immediately say how the victim died when the twister touched down Thursday evening. At least five other people were hospitalized, state emergency management spokeswoman Lori Getter said. Fifteen homes were leveled and 30 others had moderate to severe damage in the town of 12,500 near Madison in south-central Wisconsin, she said. The storms also caused extensive damage in the village of Viola, in southwestern Wisconsin. Three people there were hospitalized and about 70 to 80 homes were damaged, Getter said. "There's houses half gone. All the trees in town are gone," said Bill Bender, owner of the Viola Quick Stop. "There was stuff flying by the building, like big chunks." The National Weather Service is investigating reports of 18 possible tornadoes around the state, spokesman Greg Davis said. Stoughton Mayor Helen Johnson said that when the twister struck, emergency personnel were still working to clean up after a fire that gutted a local church and adjoining school Wednesday. "There's a lot of sad people, but we're going to pull together," she said. A witness captured the tornado on his camera phone. "The sky just exploded. It was debris everywhere," said David Murray, 43. "When it went across the road and it hit all the houses over there ... it was something you can't explain." Murray said he was going from Stoughton to his home nearby "and, bam, it was there, and it grew and it grew." He and others helped tend to the injured. Lenny Peaslee, executive chef at the Stoughton Country Club, said the twister tore the roof off as about 40 people took refuge in the basement. "We were ... hiding behind the bar," he said. "We had beer, anyway." |
