Title: Useful or Useless Info. Non CH
Post by Jimmy B. on Aug 16th, 2005, 10:38am
Have you ever gone to a gas station with a new, borrowed, or rented car, and don't know which side the gas tank is on?

Take a look at the Instrument Cluster Panel in front of the driver and draw an imaginary line, cutting the Instrument Cluster Panel in half. If the fuel guage is towards the right of that imaginary line...the fuel tank's on the right side and if the fuel guage is on the left...you guessed it...the fuel tank's on the left.

Works for 95 percent of American used (not made, mind you) cars.

Well, I'm in the 5% because my Corolla's fuel guage is on the right and my tanks on the left. :-/  Now that I think about it, my hubby's 1 ton Chevy's guage is also on the right and the tank on the left... sure it's not the "opposite" instead of the same side?

Our gage isn't working correctly in our S10 pickup truck.  $600 to repair it.  We just keep track of the milage so we know if we are good to go or not.  That is alot of money for such a small part.

Yeah ok...I guess you could do that, too. :)

According to the site...it doesn't work on all cars but gives you a better chance of pulling up to the correct side of the pump without getting out of the car .

I just look in the driver side mirror... If I see the filler door, I know it's on the left, otherwise I park with the pump on the right... And if I can't find it on either side... I just dump it in the back.  :P

I have this disability that I do not know right from wrong(I mean left).  So am always right or always wrong.

The petrol attendants here are super as they always indicate where I should pull in! :)

If I'm on the wrong side, I've found the perfect solution. Have you ever seen a mama birdie feeding her babies? She'll hold the worms in her mouth, possibly masticate them a little, and then let the food drop from her mouth into the waiting mouths of her babies. So, if I pull up and find that I'm on the wrong side, I put my mouth over the nozzle, depress the trigger until I've got a mouthful of fuel, and then lean over the fuel opening of the vehicle and "feed" it. I usually keep a chopstick in my briefcase so I can open the fuel "trapdoor," just like a baby birdie's mouth, waiting to accept the precious "food" that I have borne ever so carefully. Admittedly, fueling your vehicle in this manner IS rather time consuming, but it gives you a true sense of satisfaction and a level of intimacy with your machine, not unlike the relationship that a mama birdie shares with her babies. The only real drawback to this, is that because most clusterheads are smokers, you may want to go rinse your mouth out first, prior to hopping into the driver's seat and sparking up a cigarette.

My Highlander and Dodge have the guages on the right. The filler is on the left on both.
On my hot rod the guage is on the left. The filler is in the middle of
the trunk. You have to open the trunk lid to fill it.
Don't matter though, it never leaves the garage. Doesn't have a motor in it.
